I was surprised the first time I heard a pastel work referred to as "painted." Now it just sounds normal. I am saving up for pastels so I can compete your pastel class. I bought it when you introduced it so I could get the best price. This painting is lovely!

This is my favorite medium! I use q-tips to spread pigment, and I like using black paper it makes the lighter pigments pop. I was trying to figure out why put down all that color down when you were going to black it all out. But mistakes happen and it became a great teaching moment. Also, if you can't get a fancy sealant, hair spray works just as well. Just prop it up so the piece is vertical as well as the can. Spray around 12 to 18 inches away to help keep large droplets of your piece.

Nice video! When I use pastels, I make sure to have a few pastel pencils in dark brown, dark grey and white so I can add edges and shadows with some control. I also think that certain strong colors, like dark reds (like alizarin crimson) and dark blues are very hard in cheaper pastels, so I buy a few more expensive soft pastels in those colors. I would really like to see some more pan pastel demos! I am still debating whether to buy some of those since it’s so expensive. One item you might want to show that is inexpensive and great for sketching on newsprint are the colored charcoal from Cretacolor. It comes in big thick sticks and Blick carries them. They do throw more dust, but I don’t think they use toxic pigments.

Love, love, love this. Pastels plus still life; you’ve added my two favorites together. Pastel pencils are also a great alternative for people who like the effect of pastel but don’t like pastel on their fingers.

I've never gotten into pastels because of the mess, but I have a couple of sets leftover from college classes. I recently found some wooden pastel pencils on clearance and got them to see if they make a difference. Jury is still out on that 😊 I need more practice.

Hullo Lindsay! I do enjoy watching you work and since you picked my latest medium that I am learning, I wanted to have plenty of time to watch. I know signing up for your critique club is a great deal and money well spent especially for beginners and in so many different mediums how can you go wrong? You can’t! Unfortunately I’ve spent all of my money on supplies and silly things like food and shelter. I do have a separate art fund that I’ve been trying to save to, but I keep raiding it to buy pebbled paper and square Brutfuner pencils, I have been trying to save enough to take a pastel painting class from Alain Picard and yet it still remains out of my reach. I am wishing you all the best and many enthusiastic students for your creative critique club! Take care and be well.

oh thank you so much, this will be so helpful as I've been struggling with my pastel chalks a lot. pastel pencils - finally starting to get them more or less, but pastel chalks are so soft and dusty (at least the ones I have - from Mungyo) that I've been having a lot of trouble using them for anything other then very soft almost no details backgrounds. that said, how do you keep eyeshadow sponges from lifting the color when you blend? so far I've only been able to blend/press pastels in with my fingers reliable, sponge just seems to act like an eraser for me :(

Do you have a medium you prefer to capture and obtain the most realistic glow and also aura of the moon on mixed media cream paper and also gray toned paper? Tips, tricks appreciated. I'm sure I have some suggestions on my playlists but do not have time these days to scan and search. I really love night scenes but struggle to capture the realistic pop of the moon and the glow it exudes. Not so much the aura but more the glow itself of the moon. Thank you for your time!

Lindsay, Thank you for another pastel tutorial. That is a medium that I struggle with where I fill the tooth of the paper too quickly and don't get the number of layers that I need to complete the art. Any suggestions? Also, I don't see the link to the reference photo. I searched unsplash and can't find it.

Lindsay, I've been following you for years. Just a quick question. I only paint on fabrics. Usually with fabric acrylics. Can you recommend one of your classes that deals with acrylics. Or are the blending etc methods the same as watercolors? Thanks so much.

QUESTION Do you think the 40 pack of Sennelier soft pastels have a good color range?

The assorted? I think they do portrait and landscape in that size too. Lemme check... Ok I checked the colors in the 40 assorted and I think the greens are lacking. Great price on amazon tho

@@thefrugalcrafter Thank you for checking. I also have NuPastels with a good color assortment. I brought them when Blick clearanced them out to stop selling them individually. I wouldn’t recommend fixative. It has a tendency to darken the colors unless you allow for this darkening. Also matting is unnecessary and most (while still using spacers) are just framed behind glass these days.
