Yes panpastels are less messy but they DON'T create less dust and it finer dust. Pastel are flour kind and panpastel are cornstarch.. and I am sensitive to pastel dust and get more itchy when I use them.. I use an 😷 have to wear 🧤..

you can always do a woodgrain background if you're stuck in the background. As for soft pastel I like fuzzy. Its what its ment for so dont thread if it looks fuzzy; use it to your advantage; say the soft out of focus look from watercolor only take that make it wider as canvas is more likely bit bigger than regular watercolor. At least in my case anyways. I use my pastel pencils or colored pencils on top. For out of focus fuzzy Ideas think droplets shimmer or fuzzy christmas tree lights.

Hullo Lindsay! I really am enjoying your Pastels of September videos! Have you tried to use a table easel with a small capture tray for your easels? I purchased a Creative Mark Van Gogh Wood Table Easel. I cut the wood stops to allow the bottom of my board would go all the way to the table top! I made a tray to catch my pastel dust and I use a brush to knock down the extra dust so I never BLOW! I know there are a lot of exceptions you make to create a more friendly filming area but you should not endanger your health for any video or artwork! I really was amazed at the full on color fields you layered down at first! It really shows just how opaque pastels really are! I know you said you were going to work on the Canson sand grain paper, I hope you consider using another surface just to show some variety of surfaces Pastelmat or UArt sand papers come to mind as other papers you might have in your studio? I am looking forward to watching more of your pastel paintings of September!

@@thefrugalcrafter I realize this is your purpose but I think it would be good to see how pastels work on different surfaces as I had a lot of trouble deciding on a favorite, in fact I still use several for finished works and I have even more choices for practice even homemade surfaces I made from watercolor paper+gesso+pumice! This sand grain is one of the least expensive papers yet! Well thank you for answering my comment.🙂

Loving this series! Would sanded paper damage the sponges and blending tools made for pan pastels?
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 2 жыл бұрын
Ordinarily no and this paper wont at all because it's not really a sanded paper. If you chose a really coarse sandpaper it would but not your typical art grades. The pastel lubricates the sponge.

This was a.fantastic tutorial! Thanks so much. I got out my Koh-i-Noor soft pastels, that were sleeping in their boxes for years and got this done 👍. So satisfied! I used matboard covered with Liquitex clear gesso, as per your recommendation. It all worked well All amazing tutorial tips. I need to get the eyeshadow applicators. My fingers are way to big to smudge nearly 🫣🤭 Thank you so much!

Question off topic: I’m afraid of getting mold in my closed palettes. I live on the ocean in NY and it’s been very humid down here. I leave them cracked open. I made a mix of H2O & 70% Iso Alcohol-90 to 10 ratio. Can I spritz all my paints and how often ? And I have Steve Mitchell’s M. Graham palette, 10 tubes - Do they smell? Had them for about a year. Never noticed it before. Hope you slide into Empty Nesting peacefully.

Hi Linds! Is the soft pastel course interchangable with oil pastels? Or any of the pastel tutorials? I bought it some time ago because i saw the mungyo pastels in the picture and just wanted to know
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 2 жыл бұрын
Well, if you already have it give it a try! I generally recommend if you are trying to do a soft pastel lesson in oil pastels then reduce the size off the paper by half as your blends won't travel as far.

Ooh…I must try this! Nice work! (I always say that and never get to it…but maybe I will this time.) I have a decent set, starter set + (and I have the turquoise…yay!) of Pan Pastels and an old small set of very vintage Rembrandt pastels from my art classes decades ago. BUT for the stick pastels, I think I would use my NEW and large set of (more than 50) PRISMACOLOR NU PASTELS that I bought from open stock from my local art supply store who reduced them to like more than 50% off. The reason is that PRISMACOLOR, in their “infinite wisdom” has decided to only offer these in sets😡BOO HISS! It just makes me mad that Prismacolor keeps doing things to hurt their customer base rather than build it up. (Dick Blick still has a lot, but has a notice about no more open stock after current stock is gone.) Outside of that, the Nu Pastels are fabulous and easily water soluble…if you want….and use pigments that are mostly LIGHTFAST. The pinks, reds and violets are especially GORGEOUS. If you like Nu Pastels and have a local art supply who’s reduced their stock, be sure to grab them! p.s. as of this post, Dick Blick only has 14 open stock colors left 🤬
