I struggled with the 12 types, but looking at the system as a spectrum changed things up for me. Just looking at me features I'd probably be classified as a soft summer, but I can get away with all the soft autumn colors as well. In pictures I look like a cool summer textbook example, because the different colors I have in my skin and hair and even my eyes just don't show up in them. I finally came to the conclusion, that I am predominatly muted or soft. Might be a bit more summer leaning but who cares. I can't take any bright colors, they overwhelm me. I can take black and white but won't look my best. Best way for me to start was mirroring the colors my body shows naturally, like lip, vein or eye color. Just wnated to leave my case here and a big thanks for your non-rigid approach! Really looking foward to the next part :)

Exactly my point! As long as you know that the most important factor for you is the softness of a color, you can use both Soft Autumn and Soft Summer palettes as they fit you. Thank you for sharing this! :)

Isn’t soft summer and soft autumn the exact same palette? Just different home season?
@kitty_s23456 Жыл бұрын
@@beeu6364 no. Soft autumn is darker (more grey added) and has more oranges/ corals. Soft summer doesn't have orange, since cool seasons don't have orange in their palette.

I had a similar experience! I'm a designer so it was specially frustrating for me being unable to determine if I'm Bright Winter or Bright Spring 😅 So I went straight to the design fundamentals: am I soft/muted or bright? Am I light, dark or something in the middle? In the end it's not a problem if I don't know my temperature/undertone (I'm probably neutral, that's why I was confused), it's clear I'm gravitating towards bright/saturated colors, so they'll be my palette. (Later I read that, while Spring is warm, Bright Spring is "the coolest spring", so my confusion makes even more sense now. I was doubting between two "sisters palettes"!).

WOW IM GASPING this is exactly what i’ve needed. i think i’m definitely a soft spring. i always ruled out the springs because it’s just too bright, and light spring colors were too much, but even a lot of the soft autumn colors are too harsh/dull/dark on me. the only colors i KNOW look great on me are mid-toned bright but desaturated olive green, warm pink, dusty blue, and dusty purple. anything too light, too dark, too bright, too muted, too warm, and too cool is just not good on me, which makes it very hard to find anything LOL. but even my eyes match the description of soft spring- they are a light green that is kinda bright but also has a wash of grey over it!! thank you for talking about these seasons ! :)

I also think that the ability to wear patterns is not about the colors, but about Larson type. People with dramatic dominance in face generally need calm and unpatterned things, whilst people with gamine face dominant pull off dynamic geometrical patterns and need them to support their face.

Thank you! I have never been able to "fit" into any of the twelve seasons - I know I'm warm (distinctly yellow) and that I'm more muted than bright (although I can't quite handle outright greyish/complex muted colours) and I definitely gravitate towards the autumn colour palette, but at the same time they're just too dark and gloomy. And both soft autum and light spring are so close to summer that they almost become too cool toned for me (while also being too dark and too bright respectively). Having the fourth option - where you can be both muted _and_ light, makes so much sense. I don't quite know whether I'm light autumn or soft spring, but just having the options means that I feel like my particular colouring is actually (finally) acknowledged.

I’d love a color analysis series. I’d say I’m a winter because I have very high contrast with fair skin, dark hair and dark eyes but my skin is a very light warm-neutral and I see Michelle Dockery, who’s frequently typed as a Bright Spring and has the same coloring as me and I get really confused.
@auburrito5168 Жыл бұрын
I also have high contrast with muted skin and even though deep winter is supposedly the most muted winter, I find myself dipping my toes into colors in the autumn and summer palettes, but autumn is sometimes too warm and summer too light.
@AlexLouiseWest Жыл бұрын
Filia, this is similar to me, except that I have pale skin, mid-mouse hair and darker brown eyes. True Winter is too intense on me. I think you’re right about your type, and those two seasons are similar in my opinion so it’s not easy to distinguish. I had an analysis in my teens which said cool and soft, then in my twenties I was told cool and high contrast. In fact, those things are not mutually exclusive, but the 12 season system implies that they are.

Some ideas.. Spring - smaller patterns that are animated or create circular patterns (e.g.polka dots, rounded flowers) Summer - blended, curving or swirling patterns that create a watercolor effect Autumn - dynamic and multicolored patterns with angles or pointed edges, plaids, animal prints, patterns that appear textured, pattern on pattern Winter - clean, bold patterns with fewer colors such as stripes, geometric patterns, stylized florals

Great video! Especially the concept of the spectrum and borrowing from the opposite pallette. And something that doesn't get mentioned is that like in design where you might add a pop of colour that doesn't go with the colour scheme to add a bit of life or energy this sometimes can work on people too. I like to wear lipstick colours that kind of clash with my skin tone for this reason. Or a small amount of a colour in my clothing that arguably is a bit off. Homogeneous schemes can be a bit lifeless.

wow soft spring really nails it for me. I have naturally red hair, but it's more ashy than a true bright strawberry blonde. My eyes are dark hazel-grey/blue with gold flecks, and my skin has pretty neutral, pinkish to peach undertones. It's super hard to tell if I'm warm or cool, silver and gold look fine on me, though I prefer gold. But softer cool tones look nice on me too as long as they're not too bright. And, warm, bright spring colors can look overwhelming on me while fall colors wash me out. A dusty coral or smoky teal looks great on me, but it's so hard to figure out where that lands on the seasonal spectrum. I've always firmly slid right in between light spring and light summer with no definitive answers from the many resources out there. This was helpful!

I appreciate your nuanced grasp and explanations of the sub seasons and how we should be looking at where we are in the spectrum rather than trying to fit a designated season. I was analyzed as a ‘Floral Spring’ in the Suzanne Caygill system in my twenties. I find very few colors from palette in stores so I have never really stuck to it for practical reasons - it’s nearly impossible to find workwear in my palette. I have been leaning into more Autumn colors and find that has expanded my options. This video made a lot of sense to me on why this works for me. Thank you!

I'm so excited for the next video. I was always classified as a deep winter by others, but so many colors in that palette didn't work for me and I would find myself looking for colors in the more muted autumn and summer palettes. Also, the pattern idea is a new one. I haven't felt like I could pull off patterns like anyone else and I didn't know that was a thing. Am I doomed to never be able to pull off patterns? Will there be another video in the future going in depth about patterns?

I'm the same with patterns, and for me I find they either look better away from my face on my bottom half, worn from top to bottom, like as a dress or something, or worn as an accessory. But the type of pattern matters too. I find more 'blended' patterns look better on me than more contrasted ones. To figure this out, look at the pattern and kinda squint your eyes, do the colours in the pattern sort of blend together, or do they remain seperate and more distinguished? Usually smaller patterns will appear more blended and larger patterns more contrasted. I think which ones you can pull off will also depend on body type, ie. broader, taller types can wear larger patterns and narrower, petite types will usually look better with smaller patterns. From this aspect, figuring out my Kibbe ID was really helpful in learning what patterns do and don't suit me.
@comment3711 Жыл бұрын
I also can not wear patterns. They somehow clash with my freckles and with my mismatched seasonal colored hair (cool skin/ strawberry blonde hair) make me look like a clown. Solid colors are at least always classic and often clean and fresh looking.

This is so interesting! As a warm, light golden strawberry redhead, I can rock some light, bright colors. Yet, I have a tie-dyed shirt with peach, oranges, coral, pumpkin and rust that is perfect on me! It has all almost the colors in my skin and hair. I thought I shouldn’t buy it, because it’s clearly Soft Autumn, but it’s like it was made for me. Adding the peach, light orange and coral are what make it work for, “Soft Spring”, I think. I can’t wear most Spring pastels much better than I can wear Summer. I’m definitely no textbook Light Spring. Until I was typed as Light Spring, I used to gravitate to Autumn colors, which set off my hair and eyes, but age my skin, as you mentioned. I am so glad for this information, because my color analysis was recent and now I will resist the urge to pitch all my old clothes and replace them with ones that might not look better! Light Spring is, overall, a much better palette than any of the 12 groups, for me. Still, color theory is very complex. I have known a few people who exemplify an existing season, but a very personalized palette is ideal for some!

And i was wondering for quite a while.. if it is somewhat oxymoronic to have the muted characteristics to light and bright spring! Then i thought maybe I'm a mute autum (since that exists readily as a subtype in the 12 seasons system). Your video helped yo clarify for me the additional dimension of temperature and reconcilled for me why the colour analyst told me i can take the brighter colours of soft autum as well. Fantastic! 👍👍👍 Am still wondering though...if i were to have a conversation with someone who is colour analysed in the 12 seasons system...shd i say I'm a 'mute autum but lighter' or 'a light spring but more intensity and more grey'? What a mouthful! 😅

interesting! this comment is super long sorry. i have been following a lot of carol brailey's work recently so my initial understanding of the system is mostly influenced by her training. i think she says she uses the 16 season system but i have counted 20. it has the same seasons as the 12 season system with slight variations in naming (soft/muted, dark/deep, clear/bright), and there are 4 added seasons are for people that sit between the outer flows of the 4 different main seasons. so for example between bright winter and bright spring is a true bright, someone with a neutral undertone, medium value and high intensity. a true deep has a neutral undertone, high value and medium intensity. likewise there is true light and true muted. it makes sense when you look at the wheel. the other 2 are true warm and true cool. so for example true warm would be someone with a fully warm undertone, medium value and medium intensity. right between a spring and an autumn. she also calls true warm warm spring and warm autumn but they are all the same palette. she uses warm autumn versus warm spring because people do usually lean a little bit more towards one of the two. i did wonder about other possible combinations like the ones you talked about because not all the possible combinations of undertone, value and intensity are covered. what if someone is warm and light like a spring, but more muted like an autumn? well that would be a soft spring i guess! and that could that also be called a light autumn depending on wether you lean more autumn vs spring! the way i understand it there are three factors: undertone, value, and intensity. every one has three different possible states: neutral, low/cool, high/warm. every possible combination gets you 30 seasons. i'll show you how i got to that. there are 6 subseasons for every main season. then there are 4 more true palettes: true bright, muted, deep and light. 4 x 6 + 4 is 30! i'll expand on one of the subseasons, i'm not gonna type them all out haha. let's do summer. you have the standard light, true and muted/soft summer. then cool summer (cool winter/true cool). then there are 2 subseasons that borrow two different characteristics from winter: value and intensity (they already have undertone in common namely cool). a summer palette that borrows brightness from winter could be a bright summer: cool, light, but not as muted as summer usually is. a summer palette that borrows deepness from winter could be called a deep summer: cool, deeper and muted. love the approach of looking at it like a spectrum rather than fixed categories. the categories are just boxes we drew around positions on the spectrum. the more specific categories can give you a better idea about where you sit on those three spectrums but at the end of the day the spectrum is the important part, not so much the category you call it. great video, really expanded my understanding of the color analysis theory as i watched it!
@stylerefinement Жыл бұрын
Thank you for this! So insightful, and exactly my point about how more than 16 sub-seasons come to be as we combine the different characteristics. I do agree that true neutrals can exist but how I define it is that they're not affected by a certain characteristic of colors much at all - for example if you're a true bright then that means temperature of a color is not an important factor for you, but it's the intensity/clarity of the color that matters the most so you need to avoid toned colors! I think with the concept of spectrum we can be a lot more flexible in understanding how color analysis really works and widen the variety of colors we use rather than being confined to a specific set of palettes :)
@miramari732 Жыл бұрын
It makes a lot of sense :). I'm one of these weird people who just don't fit any category with added feature of having light olive skintone that makes it even harder ^^. On intensity I sit on high/very high setting (if I look most natural in bright, "firefighter" red lipstick, contrast is as high as it can go), but I can use some warm, dark muted colors like taupe. On value I'm somewhere between medium and dark - light, washed colors makes me look like corpse, but some lighter colors (not very light pastels, just visibly lightened from default versions) can be saved by a lot of brightness, redness and warmth. I look good both in cool and warm tones (I mean in test orange vs magenta I look good in both), but slightly better in warm, especially if they are muted or darkened colors. Absolutely nothing can save colors on "green" side of color circle - no warm blues, no greens, no cool yellows. I can't go wrong with reds - as long they are reds, not wash-out reddish pinks. In traditional 12 season I was categorized as bright/clear spring but lighter and greener colors from that pallete are no-go for me. Thankfully I can borrow a lot from clear winter and deep autumn palettes. With added "true bright" as category I'd say that I'm true bright x deep autumn mix XD

I’ve been typed as a true winter and a soft autumn. And I’m not sure I agree with either. I greatly dislike bright colors on me and tend to wear neutrals. I have a fair golden/yellow olive skin tone (I’m finally confident with that assessment) but I’ve kind of given up on figuring out my season.

Hi. Just my opinion: you can't be both a TW & SA, since they are very different palettes. If you have yellowish skin, you may be more of a soft autumn, bordering on soft summer. You might also be a "true soft/ true muted", meaning you can both wear SA & SSu colors. Do the lipstick test: pink vs orange-brown. If pink suits you better = cool undertone. If orange-brown = warm undertone.

Do you have a suggestion on how to better distinguish between a soft summer or a light summer? I can tell that I'm neutral leaning cool, and I can tell that I can't wear super bright colors (especially warm ones), but I can't tell if the softer darker colors are more flattering or if lighter brighter colors are.
@stylerefinement Жыл бұрын
Similar to differentiating Light Spring to Soft Spring, with Light vs Soft you should compare yourself wearing a tinted color (color with a lot of white) vs toned color (with gray) - if you lean more towards Soft the white-mixed pastel can appear separated from your skin, whereas if you lean towards Light the toned color will make you appear dull! I hope that helps!

It's a good question and I'm not sure! But I think it has to do with colors that we perceive as "warm" vs colors that actually appear warm can be slightly different :)

Hello, is there a bright autumn type? I always felt that the closest type to me is the true autumn, because I am between deep autumn and bright winter. I can not wear very deep autumn colors like dark brown or olive, and I can also wear some vibrant bright winter colors like magenta, deep turqoise blue, and bright terracota .

So what is the difference between a Toned Spring and a Warm Spring?
@stylerefinement Жыл бұрын
I wonder if you mean Warm Spring as in True Spring! There's so many different systems categorizing different seasons that it gets confusing. IF you are in fact referring to True Spring vs Toned (Soft) Spring, for Toned Springs colors that contain a hint of grey are more suited. They're still Springs so not too much softness / grey, but a hint more than other types of Springs.

@@stylerefinement Hello and thanks so much for the reply. I have been diagnosed as a Warm Spring by another color analyst using the 16 seasons. According to the system she uses there are 4 subgroups within each season and that a True Spring and a. Warm Spring are different in that a Warm Spring is a bit warmer and not as bright as a True Spring and also a bit closer to Autumn. I think that's where I got confused. So according to your system, a True Spring and a Warm Spring are the same?

In your view of the seasons, are light autumn always light in skin, hair, eye coloring?
@stylerefinement Жыл бұрын
I think light autumns are generally light in skin color, but not sure if necessarily for hair and eye color. I've seen some dark haired light autumns, and although they can wear lighter colored hair quite well, I think there are more aspects to consider in going blonde!

@Joyfulcuriosity Жыл бұрын
I think I could be a soft spring. But I wear patterns quite well if they are blended in colors and have a light background. On the spectrums I’m neutral leaning warm. Light to medium in temperature, I have very fair skin and very light yellow-green eyes, but medium brown hair and eyebrows as well as a distinct darker olive iris ring. So I think I need medium contrast, I often combine a darker with a lighter color or a clearer color with a neutral. But I need the lighter or clearer color close to my face. Head to toe light colors wash me out, specially if they’re also soft. Autumn colors and dark colors are too heavy for my skin and eyes. Too clear colors are overwhelming. I thought it was impossible for me to be a light spring because of my brown hair, but it would make sense if I pull towards soft autumn instead of light summer.
@stylerefinement Жыл бұрын
You could be either a Soft Spring OR a Light Autumn I think! 😃 The difference can be subtle but like I mentioned in the video about your skin and also types of patterns that work for you.

@@stylerefinementi watched your previous videos too about skin tone. I’ve been trying to diy my color season for more than a year. I mistakenly thought I was cool in the beginning because I have a lot of blue in my skin and silver looks better imo. I thought I was a true winter, but when I asked for feedback in color analysis groups on Facebook they said I’m a summer most likely. After lots of draping I found winter colors look harsh and summer colors make my coloring grey. Then I would try to really pick out the colors I have in my skin, eyes and hair to look closely and find my best colors I could see some warmth there. I have yellow and green in my eyes, though they appear more grey and teal in cool colors and more yellow in warm colors. My skin looks yellow in warm colors and grey/blue in cool colors. My skin has golden highlights in warm colors and appears ashy and grey in cool colors. So I think I’m a spring. I prefer clear colors, but it’s really hard to tell why certain colors look better or not. I think white looks really good, I really like ivory for example. But I need medium contrast, I don’t think I look good in tonal looks. I like to wear bright accents, but too large swatches of bright colors are overwhelming. Though they do bring out clarity in my coloring. I don’t know if I’m more sensitive to the depth or clarity of a color. My worst colors are autumn and summer. I guess that means I’m more sensitive to clarity 🤔 both dark and light colors are better if they are clearer. I don’t think I’m a bright spring however since I get overwhelmed by too much brightness and other people prefer me in lighter and softer colors and I don’t think I have high enough contrast in my facial features either. And I think I’m too cool to be a true season. I need very neutral temperature colors. If I go too warm or cool I look sallow or red in my skin. In that regard light autumn sounds like the better fit, but I see spring more as my home season. I think your videos are really helpful! There is a lot of confusion on color seasons and there seems to be many more variables that affect the colors that looks best on us than what we are lead to believe.
@IncandescentLightbulb00 Жыл бұрын
And for this reason I predominantly wear black lol I’m so confused 😢 I really don’t feel like I match any category. All I know is that certain colours really bump up the pink in my skin and make me look like miss piggy (like fuchsia and cherry and also surprisingly nudes)
@ericathefae Жыл бұрын
I would assume that that means that you are distinctly cool toned, if that's any help (I'm the opposite - when I wear colours that are wrong for me I just look sickly yellow).
@stylerefinement Жыл бұрын
I think the fact that you ARE able to wear black also matters!! If you think about it, if black looked terrible on you (which it can for some) you would be avoiding wearing black just as you're avoiding fuchsia and cherry! So that could indicate that the value of the color matters for you a lot and that you lean towards deep :)
@IncandescentLightbulb00 Жыл бұрын
@@stylerefinement oh thank you so much for a reply! that's so nice :D I never get them on youtube haha. I personally feel really well in black but any time I go and do any sort of online quiz I always end up with light summer. TBH light summer confuses me because it's all about soft cool tones but then every actress that has that palette seems to have a very sort of warm light blonde hair. I have a lot of pink undertones in my skin and when my hair is on a warm blond side (it's naturally medium ash but I bleach it to platinum) it really bumps up the pink in my skin. Pretty much all I do with colours I wear is to TONE DOWN THE PINK. If I get it right my skin looks very porcelain. When I don't I straight up feel like a pig 😭

I’ve always been confused how deep winter can be bright but deep Autumn is soft? They are the same season just one is warm and the other is cool. Clearly some nuance has been missing for some time.

They always emphasisize *brightness* for Springs & I do not like overly bright colors & feel conspicuous wearing them. Autumn was often too warm & orange based or too "muddy." I am kind of medium & always felt both Spring & Autumn were lacking a subcategory. Medium level depth & medium level saturation are my sweet spot. I know I'm not Soft Autumn & Light Spring is too light. I was analyzed as Warm Spring by a company called Beauty For All Seasons. Don't evn know if they exist anymore. My personalized swatch package has both Spring *and* Autumn colors in it & that felt right. Too many of these color analysis systems just give you the same set of swatches as everyone else & not what *your* best colors are. I do not look good in Tomato or Poppy red & do not like red lipstick that is always pushed for Spring. It can also be difficult to find "spring" colors in Winter/Fall fashion or professional clothing.
