Summary of the poem Soft Storm
The poem from class 12 English depicts a beautiful blend of natural and social phenomenon. The speaker of the poem is presented as a rebel. He dislikes several activities of the society. The poem directly attacks some bad practices of Nepali society. The poem is longer than his other poems. The verse is free. It has a nice combination of nature and society. We can see the description of the environmental disorder in Nepali society through the words like tumult, eerie, skidded moon, tearing roof, etc.
In the first part of the poem, the poet makes a correlation between the natural disorders and the practices of human society by using words like politics, postures, rituals, and reasons. The problem less or unified city of the past is referred to as a seamless city by the poet in the last line of the first line. The recall of the time when there were fewer social problems in the society is more important.
Moving towards the second stanza, the poet has given the reference to homeless children who are seen crying in the Thamel area of Kathmandu. The main reason for their crying is their hunger and this is a serious social problem of the nation which needs mandatorily at any cost. He has used the term 'unwedded gardens of history' to explain the condition created by social and political domination in Nepalese society.
The third stanza of the poem shows a forlorn child carrying a transistor radio and wailing to find his mother. We can see the painful condition of the street children. This stanza also shows the condition of a man beaten badly for no reason. This reflects the condition of lawlessness and the poet appears to be rebellious against the existing social system.
Other stanzas of the poem explain the disturbed courses of our society and nature. The dominant ones are unable to open their mouth and they are deprived of human rights. At the end, the poem (speaker) shows his desire for freedom for everyone. He wishes to have a calm sky with the sweet music of a soft storm for all.
