Orange Betsy there are some brilliant KZbinr but there isn't anyone I respect more than Phillip McCordall. He is by far the most knowledgable and not only knows the history of photography over the last 50 years but has been part of it. On one of his videos he shows a photograph of a car he took whilst he worked in advertising. I think he may have took it 10"x8" but it's mind blowing, he really does have knowledge and talent and if I won the lottery I'd pay him to spend 6months with him.

That's a scrim. If you want to make a quasi-softbox, take two white foamcore sheets that are 6ft tall and tape them into a V shape, put your light in the middle facing the V, and put a sheet or two of that scrim paper down the opening of the V shape. And now you have a 6ft softbox.
@PhillipMcCordall
@PhillipMcCordall 10 жыл бұрын
Not a bad idea, although as the light is reflected and not direct, I can't see that as giving a similar light as a soft box, names are only names , it's the result that counts, in my view :))

Downbeatoff awesome idea. in 1990s, folks used to routinely set up 6 foot white poster board an a v. tape it and bounce flash from botton off the v.

Downbeatoff joe mcnally and Dean Cohen in separate decades used 3 by 6 shoot through panels and one to two flashes firing thru them. dean used two panels, one to flag metz flasghes to light from camera position. dean used side lighting with a panel on the other side for fill and a second light for fill. mcnally used several nikon flashes, usually one one high and one low for large panel.

@mptimber As I said I was only using those lights for the video I'd normally use flash heads, but when I use them I've found around 2 ft to be ok but I would never leave the studio with the lights on. I should have mentioned as well that the light changes a lot depending on the distance between the screen and the lights again something you can't do with a softbox. Phill

what about the heat resistance? halogen lights tend to heat up in high temperature and so the muslin / fabric or the paper has to be in high resistance of the heat so it doesn't burn. Is that correct? Thank you

@TeamCGS2005 It's not really suitable as you would have a bar across the center of the frame, the best way is to hold it on one or both sides and make something that would let you swivel it

I'm 72 and been using this system as well as soft boxes since 1965. there are great advantages to this type of light source , as Two large sheets of polystyrene painted black can be used to cut off light, meaning you can transform it into a strip light very quickly. Thanks for your comment :)

Hi Dave, holding the tracing paper is simple, either tape or staples, when using any tungsten or halogen be careful, they all get very hot, never leave them unattended , it's the same in any photo or film studio, you must be careful. Phill

Anything that I transparent, another answer is to reflect light off a white sheet it will need to be nearer the subject to get the contrast but worth experimenting with.

Hi, please I need to know how many lumens does your light have? How many lumens do I need for KZbin videos
@PhillipMcCordall
@PhillipMcCordall 3 жыл бұрын
It is much more complicated than that as light drops off if the light is further from the subject.The inverse square law says .... "As you double the distance of the light from the subject only a quarter of the light will fall one the subject". in this film I have 15000 lumens, it also depends on the camera used as normally the better the camera the less light you will need. What type of subject and how close will it be to the camera is the important thing.

Speaking of things that will help, you really need a noise-cancelling microphone so your audio track does not sound like you are talking into a tin can, as this one does. Shotgun microphones are very inexpensive on eBay. A question: are you using the camera's built-in microphone? Or a microphone that is placed on or near the camera? Either way, that is a big mistake because you will end up with an audio track that sounds like this one. Look for a microphone that can be clipped onto your shirt. Wired or wireless ones are very inexpensive these days.

Another great video Phil. How do shoot through umbrellas (and reflective umbrellas) compare in terms of light produced to that from a soft box? When would you advise using one instead of the other?
@PhillipMcCordall
@PhillipMcCordall 10 жыл бұрын
I must be honest, I've never tried shooting through an umberella, I've always considered ir an amateur way, now I might be wrong; I find that with a softbox I can control the light well by flaging of part of the box, I'm not sure it would work with an umberella though.

Hi, Would you recommend this lighting set up for photography? I shoot a lot of still objects and was wondering is continuous lighting is good idea and a better alternative than my strobes? Thanks
@PhillipMcCordall
@PhillipMcCordall 3 жыл бұрын
If you have simple strobes without modelling lights , accurate lighting is virtually impossible, studio strobes are fine though. Good lighting on smallll objects very often requires use of mirrors as reflectors and if you can't see what they are doing there's no way. Sometimes a couple of millimetres on a mirrors angle can make all the difference.

Phillip, what are the main differences between chinese made ones compared to branded ones? Apart from build quality and price? is the lighting the same?
@PhillipMcCordall
@PhillipMcCordall 10 жыл бұрын
The light will be the same, although all makes will have a slight difference in white balance, Chinese products are very good nowadays, I've just bought a Chinese go pro that's fantastic . The biggest problem will be a constant level of flash, it may differ up to around 1/2 a stop between flashes recycle time may be longer , reliability may be a bit worse, so I would buy an extra one for parts or extra light if needed,but all in all I think they are pretty good.
@tranvthuy
@tranvthuy 10 жыл бұрын
Phillip, what i meant is if i was to buy some light mods from China. Ie. stripboxes. Would the quality of light change?.. what is the difference?
@PhillipMcCordall
@PhillipMcCordall 10 жыл бұрын
No difference except the color may be slightly different, that depends on the material used for the diffusion and the finish inside the soft boxes. As for the shape you choose that of course depends totally on what you are shooting. Very probably the real difference will be in the ease they go together, and the lifespan, a good example is the Lastolite 5 in 1 reflector with a lifetime guarantee and the chinese one a friend of mine bought for a quarter of the price, it lasted about 2 years.
