I have this issue on our brand new UX300h. The map screen went to night mode and wouldn't change back to day. I had done what you recommended and it stays in day mode. We don't do a lot of night driving so it's working out OK.

It sounds like you found a temporary fix! Interesting that they did not say that the UX is impacted as well.
