@@anbux5744 it’s not a town. It’s a small area of Leslie county. I’d call it a rural residential area. Not really any businesses or anything. Mostly just homes. Some really nice ones and some not so nice ones. The nearest town is Hyden and is a few minutes drive from there, but most people just go to Hazard (Perry county) for shopping and stuff and it’s about a 30 minute drive away. It’s not as isolated as you’re being led to believe.

I am like that and doing that makes it hard to make friends. People really have to get to know me and my so-called abruptness when I call a spade a spade, so to speak. I have no tact and find it very hard to lie to someone about their looks, or a musicians not so great skills on their instrument, or a lousy singer who can't carry a tune in a bucket etc. Maybe you and I are opposites of the communications spectrum. LOL! What I saw in her was not really wanting to open up to the interviewer, and not knowing how to answer many of his questions without feeling like she was being too open. After all, people she knows and who know her family might hear it.

I've not heard a single one of these Appalachian interview subjects say they wish they were somewhere else. These wonderful souls complain much, much less than more typical Americans who have been raised with the best of every possible benefit and material advantage. I haven't heard one of them claim to be a victim or that life isn't fair or "poor old me." There's a massive lesson in that about life, although I'm not smart enough to figure out what it is. Whatever the case, THANK YOU for these awesome productions!

I'm from Australia & I just adore listening to this deeply american southern accent, to me it sounds almost rythmical the way it flows from the lips. To me it's crazy that as a country/continent as large as mine Australia our accent remains the same pretty much throughout, yet America you can go from state to state & it's incredible just how different the sound, twang can be.

I live in Virginia, and I love our Southern and Appalachian accents, as well as our phrases and sayings. Studies have found that the Appalachian dialect is closely linked to the old King James English, the language of Shakespeare. I'm very proud to be Appalachian.

I have watched a lot of these videos and they are great. I grew up and lived in NJ, but a year ago I used moved to eastern Kentucky. After living in the city all my life and now I am in Kentucky, I would never want to leave. These people might not have much, but they are the most kindest, friendliest people you will ever meet.

I grew up in Louisa Ky and finally moved to Ironton Oh which is less then an hours drive . What a difference I’ve noticed in the way people talk . Even when I go to order food I’ve got to slow down and pronounce my words or I can’t get get the correct order . Even with that said I’m great full for when I was raised.

I can tell you, you have a special place there where you live. Fake hair, nails, body parts are everywhere. People here value phoney in large part. I miss the south for many things. Like for example at my home now in southern California you can't just have a fire in your yard. You need special permits and only on certain days. I really miss just lighting a big fire and sitting with friends. I am assuming you are young. Please don't be afraid to make your life whatever you want it to be. What others say about you has more to do with their character than yours. Just be a good person and if anyone tries to belittle you just laugh and tell them to choke on a bag of big ones.

As a fellow eastern Kentuckian, I love seeing our way of life shown in a non-judgemental way by the media. Eastern Kentuckians are different than anyone you'll ever meet. We grow up in isolation, seemingly forgotten by the rest of the world, but we survive and we live interesting and sometimes difficult lives. We are tough, resilient, and wise.

My (very large) family is from Leslie County, and there's not one of them who wish they could live somewhere else, anytime I go down home they try and convince me to stay, it's a beautiful place but I could never get used to being closed in by the mountains so I live an hour north in the open spaces, I treasure those people. Simple and honest and hard working, love them all.

I used to have an accent like this as I was born in the middle of nowhere in Georgia but after moving states at a young age and being around people who don't have the accent I lost it. Shame because I love listening to it

Mark’s channel is my favorite KZbin spot. The Appalachian interviews are my favorite. I’m southern, but GA and AL is like a different planet. My few trips to WV and KY were always kind of bittersweet. I love studying people, but sometimes it hurts so much to be a natural empath.

Both of my grandparents are from WV in the foothills. The culture is unique, very tight knit and family is everything.

WV has foothills? LoL Just kidding. I was born there, altho I've not lived there for many yrs. Besides family/friends, the mountains are what I miss the most. They continue to level them for housing & retail development, awa mountaintop-removal mining, so there are fewer of them than I recall from my childhood, but what remains is about as close to heaven as u can get, except for perhaps earth's oceans.

I’m only 30; just born in 1990 and I remember life before smart phones, Google, social media, online research, etc. I remember classrooms not having computers, we had to use Dewey Decimal system to look up books and do homework, we had to use a map to travel places on family vacations. Sure internet existed but it wasn’t accessible to average people to accomplish daily tasks until the last 25 years. Even cell phones were simple with no internet access; and they were outrageously priced. I remember before most people had cell phones we had to call customer service at the grocery store so the employee could page my mom to come take a call because I needed to tell her we were out of milk lol

I am 56. I sell on ebay, and I stay in touch with friends and family on Facebook. Those things are my benefits of being online. And like most people these days I have a smart phone, but I have had one cell phone or another since 1997. Now, being 56 I have spent more of my life without those things than I have with them, and consequently I have wrestled with the question of was life better before cell phones and the internet or is it better now with the modern technology that enables me to work from home and be my own boss, and the smart phone that enables me to do my work anywhere? I have given a lot of thought to the question, I mean years of it, and about a year ago I finally answered it and my answer was that life was better before. I felt free then in a way that no young person today will ever feel. It's sad.

Samantha has a charm and power about her that are captivating. ~~ If you spend time teaching at a rural, poor community college, you meet many people just like Samantha who have potential but struggle with so many life difficulties.

I'm from Virginia and moved Columbus OH and was treated by some like that. I had a manager who was bias toward people from the south. I find the most ignorant people are from the north when it comes to what they think when it comes to people from the south.

Being in the wilderness is a great blessing. As for the accent if you are raised here, that accent means love to you. Their accent was way more thick then this in the elderly 40 years ago. It's so nice to be here now, I don't have to deal with south fla. heat anymore or the bad people down there anymore. The only thing bad here is last winter when the heat went out for a week.

I grew up in southern WV and I love and miss her accent.....for the region, it's pure and unaffected by the outside. It's the accent and mannerisms i grew up around but I've lost a lot of mine and have most others have also because of TV, traveling and moving away. When I moved from my home I had to alter my accent to get along but I would still get teased or ridiculed sometimes for being from the area I was from. Now being away for 30 yrs most of it is gone....but when I here her voice I miss home.

I wrote something similar above - I find the interviewer's interview strategy/tactics really problematic and even cringe-y. He's trying to get her to talk about normal life stuff so her natural speech comes out, but he asks such deeply personal questions RIGHT off the bat, and on FILM on top of that, and it ends up feeling more like an interrogation and less like a conversation. The first thing you learn in any documentary class is that your goal should be to become a part of the community youre documenting, if you can at all (while being aware that you'll never be FROM there), so that you don't end up with this 'look at the zoo animals' depiction. This is really....yikes.

He didnt seemed shocked at all, he made it seem that it was good she went to college, it’s very hard out there to get money for that and technology to help with school work when your parents can’t, he’s interviewed all kinds of people from rapist pedos prostitutes and inbreds. He raised money for some too. He isn’t trying to make fun of anyone or use the interviews for that reason. It’s to educate people and get the darker side of things that a lot of people would judge them without being educated on why. He’s a good guy.

I'm Leslie County KY born and bred.....raised about a mile from the Clay County line. Hell For Certain isn't really a "town". It's a holler ....I guess you could even call it a community. My brother owns a little piece of property near Hell For Certain in a holler called Elk Horn close to Buckhorn Lake.. It is truly God's Country back in there. If I had the money I would love to build me a little cabin back in there and live the rest of my life in peace...just me and my dogs , with the bears and the elk and the possums for my neighbors. I grew up with an out house . We raised our own food: taters, tomatoes, sweet corn,green beans,cabbage and onions ;we dried and canned all that food for winter . I've planted many a tater following behind our old mule. I remember holding the cow's tail when I was 3 years old while my Mommy milked. My brothers packed in water from the old dug well and they packed buckets of coal in during the winter . I have been woken many winter mornings by the sound of my brothers building a fire in the old heating stove .We children gathered black walnuts in the fall and stored them behind the old stove where they would stay warm and dry. I'd crack them on winter evenings and my sister would make homemade fudge from cocoa and sugar and the black walnuts. One of my chores was to feed the hogs every evening after school. I made pets out of those 2 hogs and when December came I would cry my eyes out because I knew what was going to happen. My brothers and sisters and I worked hard and we kept our house clean and we kept our bodies clean. I have tried to give my youngins a better life than I had but I sometimes wonder if I did the right thing...they don't know what hard work is. They have all their fancy electronic gadgets and they've never seen an outhouse but they have no survival skills at all.

@@istateyourname4710 a holler is a small valley between 2 mountains...it has a stream or creek running through it and a narrow road that parallels the creek. It is similar to a city street. Hollers are laid out by nature. Streets are man made.

My great aunt was fro. Kentucky and she had a lil accent...moved to Los Angeles and I grew up with her she kept the whole family together like glue. Her cooking was the best and her heart was so big. And that house they lived in sold for almost a million dollars when she passed away. She didn’t graduate high school but she was SMART. And thrifty too. This lady seems sweet and perfectly normal.

I lived in Louisa for about a year as a teen, well there and Inez with the McCoys on route 1. Beautiful, somber place to live. I learned a lot of hard lessons out there, lessons that made me a better person. And no matter how much time separates me from those days, I still feel like those hills are my 2nd home
