I want to bring this up: I was a Smokejumper for 3 years In Cave Junction, Oregon, and Fairbanks Alaska. 1959-1961 I started at 19 years old. There is Smokejumping and there is Smokejumping. There is nothing like jumping a fire in Oregon, Washington, or parts of California where the trees grow so close together they look like a green lawn from the air. We are flying to the fire. The spotter, the guy who is responsible for getting us out of the plane. He says "OK everybody take a good look. It's wall-to-wall trees. Nobody is going to hit the ground. You will have to hit the trees and then repel to the ground. Sometimes because of too many fires and not enough jumpers only 2 of us will be jumping. This means half the crew can jump another fire. These fires are different. There are millions of dollars of trees down there and the Feds does not want them to burn up. It's a lot different than jumping a fire in a bunch of two-bit brush and weeds. That fire might burn up a lot of dirt, but no value like the big trees! Now to make the jump even more interesting the Spotter says " Floyd is flying a borate just behind us. When you bail out you hit the trees and repel down to the ground as fast as you can. Floyd will drop down to the tree top level and dump a load of borate on top of you. He can knock you out of the trees. We really don't want to lose this fire at any cost. Well, we bail out and head for the trees. We hit them hard and solid. Then repel down to the ground quickly. We hit the ground just as Floyd drops a load of borate on our heads! We made it down, but we are now covered in gray borate just like cement! How can you not love a job that is so darn exciting!

I seen the smoke jumpers once in my life. It was awesome to see. I was once on an engine crew and a hot shot crew. They all tip their hats to them. That's takes some serious courage to do!

This is that major keystone I want in my Firefighting pipeline. Y’all who do this shit are an inspiration to all of us in the Structure Firefighting and even Rescue Squad agencies.

ok, so its been a while since I worked in the woods, but really, this guy would have been ridiculed non-stop for the duration of a long, long, long fire season for saying the quasi-heroic stuff he said. As they said when I was in the shots: nobody but a fool died for a bunch of fuckin trees.

Thank god most of the other jumpers aren't as full of shit as this dude.

Agreed! I always say that the point of life is to make a mark on this world(preferably a good one) and if you die without making a mark than it is as if you never lived! Smoke jumpers and hotshots, and all firefighters for that matter,- keep doing what your doing!(and try not to die for a bunch of fuckin trees!)

The fuck you need to carry THREE knives for when you're jumping in to a fire? Seriously... you can only carry limited weight and you need a fixed blade, an assisted and a multitool? Just lol @ that.

@@ju.h_man I understand that tacticoool - because it is now fashionable. But why camouflaged - it's so much easier to find a knife if you drop it?
