Arirang Alone is a Korean folk song written in the hope and longing for the reunification of Korea. Sohyang's arrangement is a masterpiece and her vocals are mind blowing as always. Thank you for the reaction, loved it. Check out her rendition of You Raise Me Up next from Immortal Songs 2 2018.

Thank you for an enjoyable reaction. Of course she got you. She got me each time with this song and I teared again watching your reaction. 🙂 This song is about the longing for the unification of North and South Korea. The original folk song Arirang was brought in during the chorus and I joined in the chorus too. 🙂

This song, in its original form, & how it’s usually presented, is like so many folk songs, really simple & somewhat ploddy but has been changed in to this more anthemic affair by sohyang’s talent for musical arrangement. I am English, yet everytime I hear this performance I find myself feeling somewhat patriotic towards Korea!! That is sohyang’s talent for making you feel & believe what she’s singing about as much as she does. I know exactly how you feel about the captions. I have found that they are not necessary when she is singing in her native language & even when they are available I find myself so mesmerised by her performance that i forget they are even there. Having perfect vocals from a technical point of view is one thing, but I think the main thing that sets Sohyang apart from other great singers is that ability to make you ‘feel’, regardless of the language. You have seen two great performances & you maybe thinking that you’ve been lucky in that respect but you’re not lucky in that regard, where you are lucky is that you have now discovered her & if you continue on your Sohyang journey you will realise that the songs you have heard so far are amazing but in the case of Sohyang it’s just normal because she comes up with that Calibre of performance time after time after time. I have never heard a bad performance. This beautiful woman can literally sing any genre ( can’t wait til you hear her rapping!!) & as your next port of call, if you want to see her having a little then I suggest you check out her performance of ‘lean on me’, again from the immortal songs series & again with her wonderful arrangement. The theme of the show that particular week was ‘the songs of Michael Bolton’ & he was there, as a guest to see & comment on the performances. I know that this is not actually his song, but he did have a hit with his rendition of it. Having literally rendering him speechless, he gathered himself to say that her performance was ‘spectacular’

What a great reaction to this vocal master. She seems to be more than a great singer. Something even greater than perfect pitch, range, vocal control, and power emanate from her being. It really makes her one of a kind.

As JINA's Kpop explained, "Arirang" is the traditional folk song and it has various versions. The chorus part where people sang along is the traditional part of "Arirang." To add to JINA's Kpop, "Arirang Alone," a modern song, hopes for the unification of Korea by singing about the waters flowing from the highest mountains in Korea, BaekDooSan, the highest, which is located in the end of North Korea in North and HallaSan, the second highest, which is located in the end of South Korea in South. Both water flow and meet at Dokdo, the lonely island in the end of Korea in East. Sohyang arranged it in a way to show the dissonant violin sounds (representing the difference between South and North Korea) become harmonized as she sings "they become one." It's a brilliant arrangement harmonizing traditional and modern, a cover, but Sohyang's own song. The original "Arirang Alone" was sung in a traditional way (in 80s standard - another mix of traditional and modern) even though it was composed in 1989. Thank you for your reaction!!!

As we know this is a traditional Korean song . There are many ways of presenting it--even regional variations. But apparently this musical treatment was the particular work of SoHyang. Chorus, violins, solo violin, sing-along with audience, soft and loud vocal scales all were her own arrangements. And "live".

The violins, the stage, the costumes and of course Sohyang's impeccable voice and aptitude. Everything is an exquisite symphony. A masterpiece!

👍👍Thanks for the quick upload and detailed explanation. This song is a reinterpretation of a traditional folk song long ago, and it prays for reunification and the sorrow of division between the north and the south of Korea. Her pretty dress is also a traditional dress. When I first heard SoHyang song on the reaction channel and became a fan, I didn't know So Hyang before that. The Arirang song I got to know her was the best Arrangement I've ever heard. Thank you so much~ Looking forward to the next work...💖

I think Sohyang is one of the finest singers, regardless of gender, in the world. Her voice is so pure and powerful and her arrangements are fantastically well constructed. My personal favourite is 'Everyone' which is an absolute masterpiece. 7 minutes of vocal perfection. Sohyang sings in Korean and English. Normally I woldn't bother with subtitles as her beautiful, mesmerising voice is enough, however with this song the subtitles help with understanding the emotion behind the words. The following link includes subtitles and it would be interesting to hear your reaction. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWqtYp6Vr9KiaJY

The original folk song Arirang was about two lovers, while Arirang Alone is a modern version of hope but also great sadness. The songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunite, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that their parents did not abandoned them”. So now it tends to be about the hope and longing for the North and South to reunite. Where everyone in the audience sings along is where Sohyang brought in the original Arirang lyrics and melody. very thanks. 👍👍👍👍😅😅

There is no songwriter. It is a folk song.
@linzigrogan68442 жыл бұрын
It’s quite simple what the true meaning of this song is, it’s basically a traditional song about the hope that one day the Korean people will live together as one Korea & not as the north & the south,which caused many families to be split up.
@linzigrogan68442 жыл бұрын
Sorry! my bad!!! as I was saying,he said her performance was ‘spectacular’ & that she had risen to the role of ‘virtuoso’ in that performance. Truthfully though,it doesn’t matter what order you listen to her performances in because I’m sure they will, at some point, blow you away & the recommendations you receive will quite simply be a reflection of your viewers personal taste, rather than a reflection of quality. Having said that, I am sure you’ll be bombarded with requests for her performance of ‘everyone’, a seven & a half minute masterpiece & a song Sohyang herself said is the most difficult for her to sing, but I personally don’t think you’re quite ready for that one yet, I think you need to acclimatise yourself a little more with her excellence 😂😂. As with many of her Koran songs, captions are not necessary to enjoy this performance, but in the case of this song I suggest either you have captions & try your best to take on the words or watch it on your own with the captions at a later date, just to maximise the impact of this song ( it does have a speaking part in Korean so captions are handy). I accept that you may have blurry eyes by this point though so the advice I’ve just given you will be a waste of time 😂. Great reaction again, I am now a subscriber, Thankyou for taking the time to help spread the word about this beautiful lady.

As others have said this modernized version of the traditional folk song is now mostly seen to be about the longing and hope of the North and South reuniting. The lyrics are symbolic but do contain some interesting places. The Dokdo Islands are the center of a diplomatic dispute between South Korea and Japan. “Dokdo, did you sleep well last night?” is about how South Koreans like to personify the island. Centrally located between Mount Baekdu (northern border of North Korea) and Mount Halla (in Jeju Island, South Korea) it was seen as a place they could take boats and meet. "Let’s ride a boat together from Baekdu and Halla." First time listening this would not be your thoughts :) I have heard this enough times to want to dig into the lyrics and meaning.

Hi Bob, I said on "Bridge Over Troubled Water" that I didn't like that version because SoHyang screamed too much. I was corrected that it must be "belting". OK. I really like this song and her singing. That she has a great voice could already be heard in the other song. Wonderful solo violin. I fully agree with your analysis and opinion. It's supposed to be very hot here next week. Up to 40 C in southern Germany and over 35 C here in the north. Have a nice week end and Greetings from Germany
@ToddSauve2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes people accuse Sohyang of screaming but the easy way to disprove it is to listen for vibrato. You simply cannot put vibrato on a scream. She has the purest voice I have ever heard. I know someone who lives near Oxford in England and he tells me they are worried about having 40 C weather there, too. Now _that_ is hot weather for merry old England! 😲😮😯

👉“Arirang” is a Korean folk song, sometimes considered the unofficial national anthem of Korea. Arirang is an ancient native Korean word with no direct modern meaning. But it is the name of a Korean mountain pass. Nobody knows who made this song. Titles of different versions of the song are usually prefixed by their place of origin. At first, it was the song of ladies who had to send their husband somewhere. But it became a popular song when Korea was ruled as a colony by Japan in the early 20th century. (www) The History of Korean Oppression: There is a typical folk music in Korea. It demonstrates the loving and caring in this nation, and it is a patriotic song to evoke public’s personal feelings. Those sounds, called the “menari note,” are associated with children crying, the playing of willow pipes, the chanting of funeral casket bearers, and multiplication-table rote exercises. This melody is the archetype of sounds most familiar to and cherished by Koreans. () “Arirang is beloved by the Korean people and can be sung by virtually all Koreans, so it is clearly a critical factor to assure the unity of the Korean nation”:The Korean In the early 1900s, Japan attempted to implement a cultural genocide in Korea.Japanese efforts to control the Korean peninsula aimed to eradicate the Korean language, Korean family names, and Korean cultural practices. Korean men were coerced into enlisting as Japanese soldiers in World War II. Korean women were captured as sex slaves (known to many as the pejorative euphemism “comfort women”) in military rape camps until the end of the second World War.A tragic song of separation and lost love, Arirang is a national symbol not only of Korea’s distant past, but also its turbulent modern history. It served as a symbol of Korea’s struggle for independence under Japan, and its relevance has remained throughout decades of division and fraternal hostilities.“Arirang represents all the joys and sorrows in the history and lives of Koreans,” says the National Folk Museum of Korea. “It is deeply rooted in Koreans’ emotion as the cultural DNA.” (Arirang, a song of joy and sorrow in modern times) People grow up with this music no matter they live in North and South, they all listen to this kind of music and it evokes their nostalgia feelings about their nations and cultural they carry with. The separation between two countries and the sad past make this music more exotic. (wordpress)
