She’s so amazing, a master class in every performance. I believe this song is a well known Korean folk song, so one a Korean audience would all know and love. I can’t imagine anyone sings it better than this. It’s always fun to watch vocalists react to So Hyang. This is no exception. That one example of hitting the note pure head voice and repeating it, but changing to a mix is obvious once you hear it! Thanks for pointing that out. ❤️

Jennifer, so great to see you again and to return to Sohyang. You have the ability to analyze her singing that is fun and rewarding. So many reactors don't know what to do with this peerless musician and feel that they need to find something to pick at her about. She is the best Soprano alive and it is just petty to not acknowledge it. You however, find all of the things to love about her abilities. Very cool, so I re-subscribed. Perhaps you could do some more of her performances. I'm an avid fan of Lady Sohyang which can be annoying, but she IS spectacular. Thanks. Cheers.

Thank you for your reaction. Holo(=alone) Arirang is a song that expresses the emotions of Koreans. Sohyang expressed the feeling well, and you seem to have explained it well with musical analysis. For your information, the emotion expressed in this song is 'Han'. Koreans can't explain this feeling of "Han" well either. In addition to this, Koreans' unique feelings of "Jeong-Han" were formed by adding "Jeong," a Korean life emotion. "Arirang" is a word that encompasses those feelings. I feel it, but I can't express it in words. But you captured it well musically. Thank you. 발음듣기 복사하기번역 저장번역 저장

Glad to see another great reaction of Sohyang, Jen! A bit of background about the song: there are about 3,600 variations of 60 different versions of “Arirang”. It is estimated the song is more than 600 years old and "Arirang" is included twice on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The song became an unofficial anthem during the Japanese occupation of Korea (1910-1945), when singing was censored heavily and it became a criminal offense for anyone to be singing any patriotic song, including the national anthem. Therefore, a resistance anthem at the time. Even so, the song became highly popular in Japan. Currently, “Arirang” is sung in both North and South Korea, and represents the symbol of unity in the region that is divided by the Korean War. Source and more info: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arirang. Cheers!

A major point you kept reiterating, and I took not of, is the need to develop the head register very well to be able to utilize it to more efficiently go up into higher mix belts. I am a baritone and my undeveloped head voice/falsetto is part of the reason I’m not able to sing connected in the huge part of my range. A good reminder that we also have faculty up there with training that blends in when developed.

Here's a slightly more complete explanation of the origin of this song. Arirang Alone is a rewriting of a folk song. The song itself varies from region to region, retaining only some thematic elements and a basic melody. The lyrics are always about separation of lovers, and the main chorus melody is always the same. Beyond that there's quite a lot of variation between versions. This version was written in the 90s by a Korean sooner whose own family was split by the partition of Korea, and features landmarks representing the North and the South. The song is about the longing for reunification between the two Koreas. Interestingly, nobody actually knows what the word Arirang means. We don't know if it's a name, or a word whose meaning was lost to time, or just a vocal ornament which fossilized into a word. Of course, over many years it's come to represent a certain feeling of sorrow and desire to be reunited with a lover or family, but the the exact origin and original meaning (if any) has been entirely lost to linguists.

And Rolling Stone left Sohyang off their 200 greatest singers list, when she is easily in the top five--living or dead. But what do they know, eh Jen? I'm sure they don't even know who she is, they are such cultural and even nationalistic homers. For someone who has been singing for 25 years now, and 11 as the best on the planet, these experts know so little. 🤔🤷♂

I have to take RS with a grain of salt. For instance, when they rank the "Greatest guitarists of all time" but ignore pretty much any country, classical, flamenco, Gypsy, Jazz - with just a few blues guitarists thrown in.

@@ToddSauve Hi Todd!! The Rolling Stones' lottery has changed significantly, unlike before. Most of the singers on the list are evaluated as their own hit songs and songs with recognition and personality, but Sohyang has no hit songs even officially known in Korea. The 200th place included BTS (Jungkook), who has a global influence and hit songs in Korea, and (IU), who are neither global nor popular. Now only 30 years old, she is the younger sister of the people and a singer who has released numerous hit songs and is constantly active in various fields. She also listed a world class idol (Jungkook), but left out another global star (Black Pink) who boasts incredible sales and followers. Is it true that the object of so many fans' controversy (Celine Dion) wasn't part of the 200? I also saw comments from fans saying that the song was not good. Haha And what I don't understand is that (Michael Jackson) is number 86.
