@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach I'm glad you liked it! I've always found it weird it doesn't get any attention from the vocal coaches since it's such a departure from her usual performances. I've always wanted to her a technical explanation for how she was able to create the darkness in the low end of her chest voice here so I'm waiting for this to pop like a kid on Christmas Eve which is ironic since this episode was recorded on December 23rd and included a crazy rendition of Oh Holy Night which she still performs in her concerts.

@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach Yeah, she did a song on King of Masked Singer called Mona Lisa which is similar but stays pretty much in her tessitura most of the way. If you see her performances these days she's really enjoying much more restrained arrangements but she's always doing something cool and new in them. Not sure what it is, but she just fascinates me as an artist and it is really cool to see that she has the same effect on people who understand the voice as it does to a layperson like me.

This is such a rare performance where she actually goes dark and gritty unlike her usual bright and clean tone, but for whatever reason goes under the radar of reactors and vocal coaches everytime. So it’s great you checked this out. Honestly made my day. Thank you. Hope you start reacting to her more recent performances. 2020 was packed with one masterpiece after the other, and thr best part is they’re all in acoustic arrangements so you really get to appreciate the finer details of her singing. Zoe, thumb up for researching Sohyang background when I saw pop up Did You Know! Your analysis is very detailed showing us how good she did. Appreciate it. There are a lot of good songs from Sohyang like Arirang Alone and Lean on me from Immortal Songs 2. But are you game to do when she wear mask? All the songs are very good like Hug me, Dear Love, Mona Lisa, Day Day, Breathe and so on. There are 9 songs in King of mask singer. Watch on Vimeo search by Song title add "Eng" behind to get English subtitle. Don't choose teaser video that cut off halfway.

So Hyang has always struggled with her health during her lifetime with those many illnesses.. uterine cancer, hepatitis, chronic pneumonia, etc.. The night she sung You Raise Me Up She just got out of Hospital and was advised Not to sing...So she did that....lol It's really a miracle this one of the most skilled vocalist of all time could be in such poor condition. And definitely she is much more than great technician and has Perfect Control of Her Gift...and Her singing is so special.

Hi Zoe, I am so glad you reacted to this. This performance might not be for everyone but I love it, because it shows her versatility and ability to sing a completely different genre. Her use of the darker tones and the change in the color of her tone in order to achieve this, is amazing. It was also good to hear a vocal coach actually analyze this performance and explain some of the technical aspects of what was going on with the voice. Really enjoyed it, thank you. Check out her performance of You Raise Me Up next from Immortal Songs 2 (2018). Its important you react to this particular performance, because it's a masterpiece and a version she only sang once. Hold your horses, Zoe... Sohyang rocks the heck out of this song! I She might not sing many rock songs, but in this performance, every aspect of it, I would argue that she IS a rock singer. It's a performance that would surely not be out of place in any rock event anywhere/any time in rock history. IMHO.

KZbin has been sneaking in videos of other vocalists and i clicked one. The young lady sounded just like So Hyang. I was very confused until i tried reading the description which was 99% in Korean and it hit me. It was So Hyang in a 2000 concert. It was worth a watch. Probably save the reactions for the content most people requested but worth watching for yourself. It was multiple performances. Her "O Holy night" was clearly an unrefined version she sang a few years ago. Unrefined in terms of arrangement i assume she didn't have much say on the matter as she does now. She was soo young. Still sounded as amazing with the same high notes. 21 years younger but still had those supernatural cheekbones. She aged really unusually well for a mortal.

She's going to really blow you away on the others. So you got this one, Everyone and I will always love you. Here are the big ones to for sure not miss, fairly in order. Can check them out and see other reactors view counts. Arirang Alone, Lean on Me, Mona Lisa(it's rocky), Home(some reactions, really catchy great stunner song though), Where are you(scan it with audio off to make sure it's the one without the interviews spliced in all over it), Bridge Over Troubled Water, Oh holy night(black and purple dress one), I have nothing. Home has way more reactions than this song, but not sure why it isn't up there with the other big big ones. Some of that is just how many she has and people maybe feeling as they'd be overdoing it and never reach some like Home. But if nothing else if you like Sohyang, a great one to make sure to listen to. You might just regret not doing a reaction for it though, and any second time reactions are just turn offs for anyone watching these.

@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach Also, if you want other singers/songs, a lot that are most impressive don't win the popular vote(via poling) or votes come from subscribers in on a certain singer they are already here for. I'd be tempted to go to vocal coach or singer reacts channels and click most popular and seeing some of the big ones first that way. I watch all these things and the one other singer that is able to cause the same impressive feelings as Sohyang is Lara Fabian. I think most are from the Lara With Love concert. "Adagio", "Je Suis Malade", "You're not from here", "Caruso" and "Je T'aime"(2001 version...she barely sings...but it will get to you lol). I believe she's one of Dimash's idols, so.

So Zoe. Nice reaction. This was a contest where she didn't get to pick the song she was to sing. She was on this show for some time and it led to her wider popularity, and seemed to kick off her focus on interpretive arrangements and intense preparation. React to her Lean On Me,. the one with Michael Bolton in the audience. It's from a different show and very different than the others you have listened to. It's one of her performances where every word - every note - is a focus.

BTW, her major pieces with Eng Subtitles are found at the above link. You may want to bookmark it. better than KZbin. Also, when your channel is getting bigger, your reactions to Sohyangs may be monitored upon copy-right issues. So, many other KZbinrs try to avoid it by making the video clips transparent (around 50%). Then your reaction will be safe. Thanks for the great review of her performances.

Just so you know, a lot of people are requesting you to watch Ari rang alone by so Hyang, but since you’re new, you could easily make a mistake of watching her recent performance of that song. We want you to watch the old one which is legendary, then if you want you can compare it to her recent performance which is probably about as good to or almost as good. I don’t know, the first one was so good it’ll be hard to match that. So watch the old one! Watch the old one! That’s the one people are asking for. Watch the old one!

First time I attented a premiere. Thank you for doing that, she's great! And interesting information even for non-singers like me. Now I'd be suuuuper curious what you'd think about a rapping Sohyang like she did on King of Masked Singer or beginagain. She sang/"rapped" "Day Day" there, the version on KOMS is better in my opinion. You find a full one on vimeo, the official one on youtube is cut and not full (Many got fooled :D). She's amazing! (she did that last year on begin again together with for example Henry, Lee Hi, Suhyun (aka Mini-Sohyang because her head voice is heavenly as well) as well if you prefer to see her face) (And because it never gets old, I'll just hit you up on Sohyang's friend Park Kiyoung again, she's originally a rock singer. But she can do all from rock to Jazz to Opera. You may want to check out "Spring Rain". :) Hope i', not annoying, just a friendly hit up :D )

You may not notice that she sings with a bright voice usually, because the songs you have chosen so far are ones where her voice is very full. And this is the darkest and fullest voice she’s ever used. In most of her famous songs, she sings with a very bright and thin and light timbre, which can still be very powerful as she belts.

Sohyang's family CCM band POS was a Christian pop-rock band with some R&B and jazzy elements. There were few gospel influences in her voice until later. Listen to any version of their original end of set song "Calling" kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZuleH6lba55btUm05s and tell me they are not a rock band. Everyone knows the lead guitarist of POS, Sohyang's ister-in-law Jinjoo Lee, moved to the US as a rock guitarist (DNCE, Jonas Brothers, etc.) but still can't accept that POS was a rock band. Sohyang released 5 albums with POS 1999-2009.

@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach Not worth actually reacting to it but shows she was singing Christian rock but not classic Korean rock songs for >10 years before this performance. She separately was a featured soloist on Korean TV (Oh Holy Night, One Moment in Time, My Heart Will Go On, Love is a Many Splendored Thing etc. as far back as 2000-2002) with range and clarity, incredible sustains, perfect pitch and flawless transitions but still in a pop-rock style. So many people say she wasn't a skilled singer then. (Also didn't have artistic control.)

U should check out her performance "I believe I can fly" ft Thu Minh at a Vietnamese stage. Where the sound is much rawer. Eventhough the performance like a battle but it showed how great her technique is.

This song is a famous legendary rock song in Korea. She chose a rock style that she rarely sings on the stage, and in particular, she sang the difficult song in three vocal tones. Interesting choice to take a look at a range of different songs/styles in order to analyse different techniques used in those performances. Thank you, I enjoyed that. I think another interesting comparison might be taking a song she performed long ago (maybe like 15 years ago) and compare it to her singing the exact same song last year or very recent years. Yes, there has always been a lot of talent, but practice made perfect. :-) And Sohyang said in interviews herself, that she practiced like crazy, e.g. for the TV performances. I don't have a perfect example, others might know better examples, but she has sung "You raise me up" in various years.

Oh I've asked a few coaches for this as well. So Hyang prior to 2009 or so was really not very accurate as the KZbin trolls suggesting reaction to her song with Charice Pempengco will tell you incessantly. It really is apparent that something clicked after her Seth Riggs work and from that point on she found a stability that had not been present before. It really was an amazing transformation that I'm not sure there is a parallel for and I'd love for someone to interview her about this.

She had never sung this song or with them before. Or when she walks through an audience shaking hands and hugging while singing "Running to the Sky" well.

Dear Love is my all time favorite of Sohyang. The wailing and crying emotions throughout the song just makes me teared up every single time. Unfortunately, she only sang it once while wearing a mask. Sohyang brought it alright. But, just being an honest fan of Sohyang, this performance isn't my cup of tea. Her other brief stint into rock is much, much better: _"Monalisa"._ The climaxes were utterly insane. Sohyang did not just killed every single note in the 5th octave, she massacred them. 😁

There are many gold stars attributed to Sohyang's note production: the resonance, the support and projection, the larynx position, the dynamics, agility, placements and resonators, head/chest mix ratio, the control and stamina to pull all the pre-mentioned, and many more. Those are objective measurements I used to rate Sohyang's _"Monalisa"_ performance to be above. The fact that she's doing it while remaining in the 5th octave is just EXTRA gravy. There's nothing wrong with you liking Sohyang's timbre. However, be aware timbre is subjective, and will never be used to objectively measure the caliber of a vocalist. Just like popularity never will, just like how much money s/he makes never will, just like how high or low the note s/he can hit never will. Same goes with emotions. tl;dr: 1) The degree of difficulty is simply higher in _"Monalisa"_ 2) Don't use subjective preference in a rebuke.

This is a strange choice of song,well not strange but i've only ever seen this song reacted to a couple of times over the whole period i've been listening to sohyang. I must admit its not one of my fav's, I find the song a little 'bitty', it doesn't seem to flow like her other songs but before anyone shoots me down I realise that this is just my opinion & that in isolation it is still a great performance but I have been spoilt by the qualities of sohyang (its not my fault she's so amazing). What I will say is that its a good choice if you're trying to give your expert opinion on as many different genre's that she performs,like you said,this is a bit more 'rock' than we're used to,although if its that more 'rock' side to her that you're after then I would've suggestd that you watch her performance of 'mona lisa' from the TV show 'king of masked singer'. Granted you cant see her face,however it is a live performance & she really goes toe to toe with the electric guitar, a lot more akin to what I know as rock than the performance you have just seen. Dont be put off any of these performances behind the mask because although you cant see her face its very obvious that it is her singing,afterall,there is only 1 sohyang & its as if she's aware that she cant portray emotion to the audience through her facial expressions so she seems to have really ramped up the emotion in her vocals,or thats how it feels to me. I think these performances in this show are very important with regards to her voice because this show was the 1st thing she did after the period when she was seriously thinking of giving up performing & this show was a sort of halfway house for her because her confidence was low & this was a way of been on stage but at the same time hiding behind the mask. As an avid long time sohyang fan I really believe that the performances on this show were some of her best ever. She is obviously in a very different place right now,she's had a couple of good years,by her standards,of relatively good health, and it shows,she looks really healthy & happy & I din't think it was possible but she sounds better than ever. She just seems so relaxed & confident, just look how chilled she was in her performance of 'i will always love you' from the 'begin again korea' series,in fact all her performances from this series are amazing & she can be seen tackling all sorts genre wise,even rapping. Originally,she only joined the 'begin again' team because the lady that was the 'token elder' in the group up til then had to pull out so sohyang was asked if she'd step in to help them out & as we were in the middle of the pandemic it was a good way of getting her voice out to the public,so she agreed. She said she was nervous at first because they were essentially 'busking' but there was nothing for her to fear,her amazing technique allowed her to tackle everything that was thrown at her,even the rapping. I saw part of the rehearsal for the song with the rapping,a song called 'day day' & the other vocalists,all of whom are young popstars in korea,were really struggling with the speed & exactness of spitting,the lyrics out,but not sohyang,she just did it,which is why the bulk of the rap is done by her her when it came time to perform, so good on sohyang, showing the kids how its done!! I could keep you going for months with recommendations for performances of hers i'd like you to analyse but for now I would really appreciate it if you could react to her performance of Ella Fitzgerald's 'Misty', again from the 'begin again korea' series specifically, yet another genre for you to cast your expert eye over. Its amazing how many times during this series that not only the audience,but her fellow performers,can be seen looking at her in awe, or even in tears as,she's performing. Keep up the good work,I really enjoy your informative reactions. I am not a singer,or a musician,I just know,what sounds good to my ear & when someone makes me 'feel' something,gives me,goosebumps, so I sometimes feel like sohyang is wasted on me because I dont have the musical knowledge to appreciate just how good she is, it must be great for someone like yourself who can really appreciate just how good she is,but with the help of channels like yours that try to explain what is actually going on I am enjoying her performances more than ever (I dont think that i'll ever be able to pin point where she goes from mix voice to head voice,except for when its an obvious break that you're meant to hear. I have watched a vocal coach actually point out where it happens & tbh, its so seamless that I still dont get it!!!!)

Yeah I wouldn't go too far down these more obscure lesser performances if it means missing the shocking ones. Lean on me, mona lisa, Arirang Alone, oh holy night, where are you (version without interviews randomly spliced into it), I will always love you, I have nothing... like those are at least safe must do biggies. I love home too but it's not reacted to much. It's oddly catchy and just almost mystical the tone in parts. Mona lisa the other fun catchy one.

Why do you choose this performance? "Fate" and "oh holy night" are more famous and reacted in i am a singer 2. In 2012 i am a singer 2 era, sohyang was not a professional singer. She learned many things from the pro singers in this show. I don't say that her technique was not great. Hopefully understand.😆

Every vocal coach does the same 6 or 7 songs, this is a really unique use of her voice and I'm very glad that Zoe ventured out of the mainstream and tackled a song that had never been analyzed before.
