@@YamamotoKazuo in every part of the world the spear ruled the battlefield. The vast majority of deaths were vis the spear or arrow. @davefletch3063 you're half correct. A spear is easier to train en mass. However, swords like the nodachi and zweihander in Europe were made for fighting against pikes, long spears. And with training were excellent in formation. But they took more time to train, so with zweihander for example, Landsknecht were mercenaries. In squad formations they were devastating on the battlefield.
@duje44
@duje44 3 ай бұрын
@@roycehuepers4325 not the way you think, those swords were used inside friendly pike formations, so when the pikes clash and engage in melee they could jump in from safe distance of regular swords. It was basically an one up of regular swords sidearms once pikes get dropped and melee ensues. 1 on 1 spear is still a king, unless we talk full plate armour, then dagger is the king. Going just with 2 handers against pikes would be suicide. Swords in general are predominately civilian weapons, much like pistols today, and montantes were way more regularly used as bodyguards weapons in towns and cities where they would face only swords and knifes, and no armour. advantage of 2 hander in situation is of course reach, and ability to swing it around to keep opponents(without spears) at bay. One way to use swords militarily is with huge shields and short swords, like romans, close in covering with shield and then stab, hoowever biggest roman strength is that they 99% of time had much bigger army and way better logistics then opponents they faced

What I like about the Japanese martial arts is that you typically learn bo first and later when you Branch to other weapon types the techniques and lessons you learn translate well to those weapons. Also the shorter the range of the weapon the greater the emphasis is positioning for grappling. It's helped to learn other styles easier.

You should check out some belegarth videos. We use padded weapons but are full contact and do both 1v1 up to large field battles with multiple teams. One thing to consider with the sparing videos. If someone is wearing armor, a lot of those hits won't do any real damage. Bopping someone on the head who is wearing a helmet is a waste. When I trained Eido, we did paired sword practice with the assumption the other person is wearing armor so the strikes reflected that

Historically Imfantrymen were spearmen. Cavalry had lances and swords. Some nation's cavalry were archers. In very thick subtropical and tropical forests the war club and hand to hand combat were SOP before firearms in some cultures. But no military infantry culture on earth didn't wield spears as the king of battle. Spears are still prefered over firearms as self defense weapons against lions among the Massai people.

One of the interesting things that you end up learning as a byproduct from studying spear/staff is precise weapon control. It's not a matter of being able to hit the target, it's controlling the weapon when you miss, when you block, and when you strike. Having such a long range weapon forces you to learn how your movements effect the execution of techniques. Think of a gun, if you're like 30ft from your opponent you can be off on your accuracy by a decent margin and still hit the target, but if your target is out at 300 yards and you twitch or breath wrong, the shot goes wild and way off the mark. Blocking or batting an opponent's weapon with a spear can force your weapon way off line if you have too much carry through and force in the block leaving you wide open and difficult to recover. The point is that understanding how to control your weapon to create the opportunities your want is a massive advantage. The long range staff or spear brings that concept to the forefront so it's easier to recognize. In fact, you had Sifu Milos demonstrate this in the recent video in which he showed you his rooted footwork and how he punched without excessive recovery movements like you see in boxing. That same principle is at play there.

I've been learning Aiki-jo for the past couple of years (the Jo part of Aikido)... pretty interesting. It's a shorter staff, which I think is more probable to find as an improvised weapon (hiking stick, pool cue, broom stick), and they use it as a spear as well as a long wooden sword. The guy that founded Aikido used a kind of sharpened Jo (you can see it in videos), so it seems he intended it to be part spear, part long stick/sword.

@@inside_fighting Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Aikido from an "empty hand" point of view, but their weapons are pretty good, especially the Jo (4" staff). They generally don't spar, although some schools do. I get private lessons because I'm only interested in the Jo part. I got my instructor into the Jo sparring, which has surprised him a little about what works vs doesn't work, but it was mainly the distance management and fainting he was missing... the Aiki-Jo techniques are pretty good. I've also been learning Jo-Jitsu and the staff parts Kali, and I've been experimenting with the different styles, merging what works from each. He's sticking to the Aiki-Jo techniques, and still holds his own when we spar. Btw, took me a while to make my own sparring Jos. I can explain how if you like. I bought sparring Jos from around the world but they all needed armour if you're going 100%, so I made my own. It's hard to make a padded stick that long that's still rigid (for blocking) and doesn't hurt too much when you take a solid hit.

I have fought many times with spear. Spear defeats sword the overwhelming majority of the time. The best way to fight a spear with sword is using certain half-sword techniques that allow the swordman to deflect the spear and then close in very quick. if you try and fight a spear with a sword using normal techniques you will be beaten almost always.

i don't really get why spears are getting compared with swords? a spear is a cheap battlefield main weapon that excels in war and formation fighting and is obviously just deadly in general. While a sword is an expensive weapon, which mostly serves as a side arm and a status symbol. i think it would make more sense to compare a spear to other common infantry polearms such as a halberd.

@@inside_fighting I feel like context will be missing here to understand why I did that and what exactly happened, but here it is: I threw myself onto the ground from exhaustion after this 74 year old guy got the execution of a technique twisted. I had a good laugh on the ground, and since we were only 4 people anyway that day, I didn't think of it much. I don't know what exactly went through my head, but I just find it funny when the techniques that we are being taught are deadly -- in contrast, the limp execution from the 74 year old guy over and over again... I just couldn't handle it, I guess. Don't get me wrong, I got respect for that guy and I love him, but just seeing the deadly martial art combined with a skinny old 74 year old guy with a humpback, I was just triggered so I fell down and laughed. The highest belt in the dojo on that day was a blue one, because the brown belts were on a seminar. Context: The highest overall belt in the dojo is brown, too. It was a learning experience for me because, well, even though you don't want to be disrespectful in a bad way... sometimes it doesn't matter what YOU think is respectful or disrespectful. As far as I know, there is no single reason of why they decided to kick me, but it definitely wasn't the 74 year old guy telling them that he felt disrespected. He was always such a sweet person and on the day they kicked me out, I even greeted him in the locker room and told him that I was going to have a break from kenpo (even though I got kicked). So he probably didn't even know that they were going to do that. Anyway, so much left out here, but I respect your time so I cut this short, haha. Thanks for reading

One thing that surprises me is that despite there being a European version of pretty much every single Japanese polearm, the Japanese had a distinct lack of halberds, poleaxes, and bills, which would have all performed quite well against their armor... My favorite Japanese polearm is the Jumonji Yari, which corresponds to the European Spetum (it has a few other names, and one of them is rude). However, when it comes to Naginata, I'd rather go with a European saber halberd, or glaive, as they have more options to push and pull.

The Spear truly is the King of the battlefield when it comes to hand to hand close combat. From pike men to hoplites to a caveman fighting off a cave bear etc I've done a fare share of weapon sparring and found some interesting engagements, axe and shield vs spear 'Viking style' does Okish, long sword vs spear we found usually goes real bad, FLAIL and Buckler was surprisingly good you ended up wrapping up the spear to close in, double arming sword was quite good but we found your quite slow to the super fast thrust, but what was very surprising was... Wing Chun Butterfly Swords vs Spear! I've always felt Wing Chun is a Pirate/Boat fighting BLADE Style influenced by Western Buccaneers especially its knuckle Guard which pretty much doesn't exist anywhere else in Chinese History. Anyway we found that with the WC Swords you can really close in fast and trap and lock the spear, and usually the spear bearer goes into a panic as you close in 'trapping' the spear and start 'chain punching' with the swords... anyway a fun discover we found, HOWEVER we still got murdered by the spear 😆 especially low stabs at the legs, but the Wing Chun Butterfly Swords did better than the rest of the other weapons, Lindybeige made a good video on it 'hema vs kung fu'

You should look South of the Philippines and see what Silat has to offer there... For instance, look at what Maul Mornie does with a lembing/spear or with a tongkat/staff in Silat Suffian Bela Diri. That being said, in Silat, the spear isn't "easier" to learn, it's to be considered as an integral part of the whole system! So, in a tribal fight, you'll move from spear to machete to knife to empty hands using the very same principles and much of the same techniques too.

9:30 I can tell that you're trained to get close to combat... but the spear, [any spear involving technique from all around the world] is all about controlling the distance... setting a pace, and exploiting opportunities... the Greek phalanx for example wasn't just a line of spearheads that you had to face to get close to the wall, but 3, or even 4... the guys behind the front line were all working their spears...

Stopping after touching usually means to reset. It means basically the person died! Its a spear or sword, not a knife. If you get a slight hit to your hand you loose it, or the whole limb in some cases. But you r right, sometimes people still continue to fight. In HEMA, usually the rule is that you can provide an after blow even if you got hit/thrusted. Your opponent (who initially landed a strike on you) should defend that after blow.

i've done sword vs spear fighting with larp. since most people of any style usually just train and drill the same kind of weapon vs the same kind of weapon. I prefer swords not because they have the advantage, but because its more fun, and a challenge. swords have some advantages, better against muliple opponents(even though you'd still be at a disadvantage). theres not too many people i've seen specifically train sword vs shield, to see what kind of techniques they use. there are certain advantages with a sword. if you manage to make contact and tie up the spear, you can rush in, while controlling it, and have a whole blade to work with and more hand protection. spear fighters usually want to keep distance but you can naturally move forward faster than someone can move backwards. sometimes you can snipe at their arms while they thrust. it doesnt seem like theres many ways to be real offensive with a sword that i know of though. its easier to grab an opponents spear and cut them with your sword during a bind, than for someone to grab your sword without getting cut(though possible).in actual medieval times, a sword is easy to wear on your belt so you can walk around town with it, or in war, carry a bow, better weapon against armor, or a spear/polearm. or if you operated like the roman legionaries, they used spear formation, and short swords behind a shield that were easy to hide and maneuver around their huge shields, which you wouldnt be able to do with a spear

The yari has different shapes. Some are just a straight blade, some cross shaped, single or double hooks in different directions, kama yari (sickle shaped blade at the end). Sometimes you will hear yari jutsu in lieu of so jutsu.

jogo do pau is a bit different from spear. they use it very similarly to a montante and quarterstaff. they also work from range on purpose to allow the partner enough time to react and parry, which is necessary since they don't wear any protection when sparring and getting hit on the head or hand, especially how hard they hit, would shatter every bone on the hand or crack a skull. usually only during competitions do they wear full protection. they also do very wide and open swings, again, on purpose to allow for enough reaction time due to lack or protection. using a spear you would want to do as tight and quick movements as possible. both play with distance, but with different move sets

For the chinese, the there are variations of sayings that roughly translates to how long each weapon needs to be trained before reaching a level above blindly swinging with sabers it takes 100days, 1000 for spears and 10000 for a sword to be regarded as adequately trained though depending on the master, location and martial art style, the saying may switch the first 2 weapons. However, what can be noted is that chinese martial arts and society names the weapons with different titles meant to depict the type of person the welder is. The sword is the emperor/gentlemen of weapons for it is the most versatile in usage and also the most merciful. The saber is the tyrant of weapons, because its the most direct and offensive weapon, it is regarded as the weapon of killers and soldiers which is also why in chinese shows the abrasive character or villian usually uses a sabre. The spear is the king of the battlefield and is known as the generals weapon, as such most chinese martial arts that come from military history have a variation of which uses a spear with even the bare-handed technique being rooted in spear usage as that was their purpose. They are the most common classification and what i can remember of the top of my head, but there is actually alot more details regarding chinese martial arts, history and weapon and poetry that comes along with it, so if you are interested, you could dive deeper and maybe share your thoughts on the matter

Never owned a spear or a rattan staff in my life, but I improvise with the shovel in my yard. It is a bit heavier but still an amazing substitute for training. Why haven't there been any shovel based martial arts? 🤷

The game changer is to give the sword fighters a shield or even just an off hand parrying tool like a dagger or a stick. Of course that isn't really a Japanese type of weapon fighting.

The spear does take less time in training to be effective. The swordsman needs to have a shield, a buckler or larger shield, but not so large that it inhibits mobility, to be effective against a trained spearman. Another possible way is using two swords, a long and a short sword, and a samurai with proper armor using two swords could definitely close the distance. Neither of these examples were seen here. Of course samurai, would start with a length weapon for the reasons demonstrated in this video. As for the naginata, that naginata was too short, the ones that were used in battle were generally 8 feet or so in length. The guy wielding the naginata was doing some damage even though he clearly was not properly trained and it was too short.

I own a two kinds of staffs and three kinds of swords, I think context is important because when you look at what soldiers used vs fantasy then it's kind of nuts, there are swords but they are shorter and thicker. Personally you would treat a spear like a dog, one part of it is dangerous, the other is blunt and weaker. i've seen sparing and often the spear wins because of ease of use and safety in training and time to learn the weapon, but alot of people don't know how to use swords properly and end up doing stupid things. i'd use a sword, but it would have to be a dao or a messer, a gim or a set of butterfly swords would be nice.

The best part about the spear isnt what it cant do for a lone combatant but how effective it is for a unit of warriors. Swords r terrible in a formation. Y cant use wide powerful swings with out putting the soldiers to ur right and left being in danger. But a box of 20 men with spears is pretty unbeatable

@@inside_fighting do it! You would definitely enjoy it and depending on the club you join there's plenty of room to explore fighting in general. The competition aspect limits some of the fighting by necessity but is still a great proving ground for many of the key skills and keeps it honest. At my club I've been doing mostly longsword for competition training, but recently for fun we were doing some tomahawk and knife matches that endend up with us clumsily ( because we don't train it) stand up grappling half of the time. Other times, for fun, we do dagger matches and machete matches.

The problem with spears is using it alone against shield. One can correct the issue by using himself a shield with his spear. Once i held myself against 8 opponents with swords... myself with the spear and shield, the moment i have taken the 3 dangerous guys I dropped the shield and got abusive against the newbies, they're not bad tho, but I just had the knowledge at that time to not let then create a formation around me.

In this section with the naginata at the end, I was really able to appreciate how different physical dimensions pertaining to the Spearheads ability to simply Pierce or Pierce and cut allowed for a lot of returning Strokes / the ability to "paint" with a cutting edge on the retreat. Maybe that was an evolution in weapon use that emerged in a more one-on-one capacity then group formation fighting, but it's still really cool
