Non-Catholics love to tell Catholics that they preach a false gospel of legalism and "works righteousness" when Catholics insist there is an inseparable and essential link between faith and works -- and when they insist that a person cannot be saved by faith without works. Are Catholics the ones making the heretical error here? Find out in this important episode of Catholic Bible Highlights.

You know, I immediately bought the journaling bible you recommended in your ‘6 Bibles every Catholic Needs’ (even though you’ve changed to another one), but was frozen in my tracks for where to start. And then this series started. I’ve been like a kid in a candy shop. Loving annotating my journaling CATHOLIC bible, just like I did in my Protestant ones. And now, 30!! Verses to Highlight!!

Many protestants re-define Faith as a pure mental exercise (ie. just have to say in my head 'I believe in Jesus'). However Faith involves many of our actions. For example if I say I am being faithful to my marriage; it involves more than just mental exercises. Living our Faith or living by Faith involves the totality of our being which is our beliefs AND actions.
@KennyBurchard
@KennyBurchard 3 күн бұрын
Exactly right. Faith as a mental exercise and/or mere words without actions that correspond. That “faith” can never save anyone ever.
@hirakisk1973
@hirakisk1973 2 күн бұрын
Exactly, I have heard a few scholars say that the word "faith" would be better translated into English as "faithfulness". When talking with Protestants, I say that the word "faith" in the Greek was "belief+actions". They are two sides of the coin of what we call "faith".

Jesus Christ teaches the Good Samaritan, a foreigner outside the faith, was justified before God by his work of mercy! For "to those who HAVE SHOWN MERCY, MERCY SHALL BE SHOWN THEM ", ( Matthew 5:7), and "to those who HAVE DONE GOOD, THESE SHALL ENTER INTO THE RESURRECTION OF LIFE ", ( John 5:29), as Jesus Christ teaches those who hold banquets and invite the lame and outcast, will inherit Heaven! ( John 14:12). I love Kenny and his channel! Keep up the GOD work! Peace always in Jesus Christ our Great and Kind God and Savior, He whose Flesh is true food and Blood true drink!!

@27:39 Agreed! The whole argument in the book of Romans and Galatians is dealing with Judaizers not Pelagians or semi-pelagianism. In addition, I think if we need to make distinctions between nature and grace and between works of law, natural works and good works. When we talk about justifying works we are talking about Holy Spirit wrought good works done in charity (state of grace). These Holy Spirit wrought good works happen after regeneration (Eph 2:10). To my protestant friend we would also say we are not talking about obedience and good works apart from faith. It is not obedience or good works alone. Even an atheist or pagan can have a lot of natural obedience and natural good works but the atheist lacks faith and that is a virtue that is also needed. It is not obedience apart from faith and it is not faith apart from obedience. It is the obedience of faith in grace (charity). It is charity poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5) that fulfills all things. Charity meaning in a state of sanctifying grace vs. being in the state of mortal sin. Again, we can have all the natural faith and natural obedience and natural good works in the world but if we lack charity (sanctifying grace) then we are no longer in a state of justice. I know that is a lot of distinctions and my protestant friends accuse me of being overly complicated and complex. But simplicity does not automatically equal truth and complexity does not automatically equal falsehood. Failure to make distinctions leads to error.

Faith and Good Works was even implicitly commanded by Jesus in just 4 verses. “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” FAITH - Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. GOOD WORKS - Love your neighbor as yourself.

Hello, maybe try having them focus and try interpreting what Jesus said in the actual Gospels and stop interpreting what Jesus said in the epistles. Those epistles were written as a follow-up to the churches learning the Gospels and their everyday issues brought about once apostles left them to it. Even in this video, several of the verses were in reponse to the Judaizers preaching circumcision. If you look into why each epistle was written, (I did a google search for each) it explains why the follow-up was needed. The circumcision ideal was so important, they even had the first council in Jerusalem over the issue. Then epistles were sent out and in-person deliveries were made to ensure these churches had the right information as a go-by. Just a thought from a fellow searcher of truth.

Faith and Works are not two different things. They both are means to Trust, obedience, sacrifice for our Lord and our neighbor. Jesus can help us fight against our sin and ACTUALLY save us from our sin while on this earth and then also from the penalty of sin later. Catholicism makes it all make sense.

Perhaps I misunderstand the passage, but isn't Revelations 20:11-15 the definitive statement on the issue of the role of works in Christian faith? If I'm incorrect, please let me know. It seems unambiguous to me, but I'm not wholly confident with respect to the context of this passage.

41:28 When you say "salvation' here what do you mean? I think this is where protestants and catholics talk past each other. Saved to adopted sonship, saved to justification, saved to sanctfication, saved to eternal life. When protestants say they are "saved" they don't mean "I am NOW in heaven." so what are they meaning? Catholics seem to focus on being saved as in saved to eternal life (heaven). Again, even eternal life can be said to have distinctions as eternal life does not always mean heaven but can refer to the present life of sharing in sanctifying grace as in "Whoever eats my flesh HAS eternal life" Meaning they have sanctifying grace not that they have a ticket to heaven. So again distinctions, distinctions. And you do awesome at this I am just pointing out this necessary part of the discussion when talking to protestants. We really need to back up and define our terms. @112:00 Matthew 25--"saved" to heaven. So even for the protestant there is a sense in which they can not truly say they are "saved" yet. I think it is important to remember it is the catholics who teach we NEED the sacraments and it is from these GIFTS (sacraments are all gifts of God not works/ performances of man Hebrews 6:4 tasted the heavenly GIFT) which flow the living the sacramental life (obedience of faith). Protestants call the sacraments "work" of man something scripture clear calls "gifts" that we receive. We receive baptism, we receive the eucharist, ect. Who are the real pelagians? We catholics do not deny the sacraments! We are definitely not antinomians but where are the real legalist? I think they might have turned "faith" into a form of legalism (faith without obedience, sacraments, and sanctifying grace). I think they would agree we all have to keep the 1st commandment but how are we to keep this commandment faithfully?

Would you say that Catholics and protestants (excluding free gracers) disagree all that much? Protestants say that we are justified by faith, and that faith is demonstrated by our good works. Catholics say we are justified by faith working through love, but it's not the good works themselves that justify us -- no amount of money we donate to the poor is going to buy our way into Heaven, but we donate because we love God, want to obey his commandments, and live that faith out by doing that particular good work, among others. Unless I'm missing some important nuance, I don't see why we all have to argue about this, except to defend Catholicism against the false claim that we need to earn our way to Heaven.

As a die-hard Protestant who left the Roman church 35 years ago, I find GREAT fault with this video by what Mr. B does NOT say. It's quite easy to lecture without the opposing view there to object, so kindly allow these next 2 comboxes to be my objection. First, I have before me a list of 30 people from antiquity who used the phrase "faith alone" or its derivative. I won't list them all, but suffice to say, they would obviously disagree with you. Marius Victorinus: For faith itself alone gives justification and sanctification (“Ipsa enim fides sola iustificationem dat-et sanctificationem” ). Chrysostom... For he makes a wide distinction between commandments and ordinances. He either then means faith, calling that an ordinance, (for by faith alone he saved us) or he means precept, such as... (NPNF1: Vol. XIII, Homilies on Ephesians, Homly 5, Ephesians 2:11,12). Basil of Caesarea:... Let him who boasts boast in the Lord, that Christ has been made by God for us righteousness, wisdom, justification, redemption. This is perfect and pure boasting in God... justified solely by faith in Christ (Chemnitz, Examination of the Council of Trent, Part 1, p. 505).. Ignatius of Antioch... His cross, and his death, and his resurrection, and the faith which is through him, are my unpolluted muniments [legal titles] and in these, through your prayers, I am willing to be justified (Epistle to Philadelphians). Bernard of Clairvaux... “solam justificatur per fidem,” (i.e., is justified by faith alone) (In Canticum serm. 22.8...PL 183.881): Obviously, the RCC arbitrarily picks and chooses which early teachers constitute "tradition" and choose only those which they feel are in conformity with the magisterium. This is dishonest, as was this video by not mentioning them. Second, Since Mr. B agrees that works of the Mosaic law "definitely" do not justify us (20:30). How nice. Why then are the 10 commandments of the Mosaic law "necessary for salvation" per CCC 2068??????? Third, when we say (and the Bible concurs) that we are not saved by works, we mean ANY works, whether it be from the law, good works we do as a cheerful giver, or good works done in God's grace. The distinction Mr. B tries to make between works of the law which don't save -- and faith and good works done with God's grace which DOES save (CCC 1821) cannot stand biblical scrutiny. Mr. B is advocating that anytime we hear we aren't saved by works, to take that to mean the restriction of only those works emanating from the Pentateuch. However, this cannot be so because Paul goes on record using the word "law" to designate the Scriptures as a WHOLE, which would mean he is NOT restricting good works of the law only to the Pentateuch, but ANY GOOD WORKS WHATSOEVER right up to this present day. For instance, he appeals to the law in 1 Cor 14:21, but he quotes Isaiah 28:11-12, which of course is NOT part of the Pentateuch. In Romans 3:19, he describes his citations from the O.T. in verses 10-18 as "what the law says". However, these verses are derived from the Psalms (5:9, 10:7, 14:1-3, 36:1, 53:1-3, 140:3...as well as Proverbs 1:16, and Isa 59:7-8) all of which categorically proves that good works done under the old law-- "for salvation"-- cannot be restricted to the Mosaic law as is commonly supposed. Thus, we must not seek to qualify the kinds of works which are excluded for justification because the fact is, each and every kind of righteous work is prohibited; i.e., we are not to trust in them AT ALL, nor does God save us by ANY kind of righteousness on our part done with or without the grace of the Holy Spirit. Mr. B will agree that no one can be justified by the Mosaic law, explicitly stated in Acts 13:39. Fine. But the problem with Catholicism emerges when you agree (for example) that if obeying one's parent's under the Mosaic law was not salvific, then how can you say that obeying your parents under the New Testament IZZZ salvific? Yet that is exactly what they teach; i.e., God has created a new "system of grace" wherein the good works we do under the new covenant, now become the gateway to heaven. But by doing so, they have attached to their good deeds, a salvific EFFICACY on the same level as the blood of Christ. This is unacceptable and is "another gospel" per 2 For 11:4 which saves no one. I will continue in one more combox quoting from the #1 RC apologetic book for the last 25 years, "Not By Faith Alone" by R. Sungenis, endorsed by all the major Catholic luminaries of today on the inside cover pages. To verify what I just said about good deeds having the same sin-cleansing efficacy as Christ's blood, we read, "Works become JUST AS MUCH a salvific part of the individual's justification as his faith" (p. 172). There is your equivalency factor, clear as the light of day and it is "100% unbiblical"... to use Mr. B's video title. continued...

Before I give more disturbing quotes, the bulk of Mr. B's time was throwing out the verses that tell us we ought to be good. But no Protestant alive or dead has ever advocated that faith be "dislocated" from works, to use Mr. B's word. All the "good" passages simply mean that the elect in heaven will have had a GENERAL TENOR of being good, not that their goodness got them there! The dire difference is that we don't believe we are saved or justified BYYYY them in any way whatsoever, whereas Catholics DO, which is their fatal error. We say, yes, do a million good works to the glory of God, but if you begin to base your hope for HEAVEN on them (explicitly stated in CCC 1821), you are lost. The "damnable works-righteousness" Mr. B (rightly) says Protestants accuse Catholics of, may be seen in "Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma", p. 261. Catholics seek to be, "supernaturally endowed to perform ordinary and extraordinary heroic acts *FOR* the salvation of the soul". This is precisely where and why we part company. Allegedly, as long as they admit their good works are done under the umbrella of God's grace, all will be well, or so they think. Instead of a singular confidence in the doing and dying of Christ alone (Romans 5:10) a clever trick is sneaked in through the back door. Specifically, when one has the intention of doing good works under the auspices of God’s grace, this mindset magically qualifies those deeds to become the hinge upon which the door into heaven swings (repeat, CCC 1821). What Catholicism is stipulating is that the power of his grace invigorates them on a path of good deeds, all of which are then instrumental in the verdict of justification (i.e., our right standing before God). Now to Mr. Sungenis: "Works are a primary criteria in [God] deciding whether or not the individual is saved" (p. 50). "Works are the determining factor in our salvation" (p. 215; cf. p. 38 footnote). "Works are the ultimate factor in the salvation of the individual" (p. 145). "Salvation is either granted or denied based on works" (p. 159). "A person's eternal destiny is dependent on God's final evaluation of the person's deeds" (p. 484). "If done through grace, they [works] are graciously meritorious for salvation" (p. 102). "The evaluation of our good works as noted in 1 Cor 3:13-17 and 2 Cor 5:10 will not result in personal rewards only, but "rather a judgment which will determine whether one will be saved" (p. 41). In light of these audacious claims, there can be no doubt that Catholics have been rightly accused of working their way to eternal life, for that is exactly what they teach. Rather than trust in the mercy of God alone in the face of Jesus Christ (2 For 4:6) so that "no flesh should glory in his presence" (1 Cor 1:29) heavy emphasis is placed on their dazzling "performance rituals" to ensure a spot in heaven, and that being so, we shudder for the salvation of the Pope down to the pauper in the pew. Contrary to the video's thesis, "Faith Alone" is 100% biblical. The book on my shelf, "Faith Alone in 100 verses" by Wilkin is a case in point. I will NOT throw that book away after watching this presentation, for it did NOT have the power to persuade those of us aware of the facts Mr. B. OMITTED to say-- such as doing "heroic acts that save the soul" mentioned above-- which debunks his thesis and is downright preposterous. Hence, Evangelicals use the logo, "Faith Alone" merely as shorthand that guards against a tug-of-war. That is, a tug-of-war between trusting in our own "right conduct" to open heaven's gate (per CCC 16) and the fatal error of giving equal trust to the "right conduct" of Christ the Lord! At the end of the day, "Faith Alone" brings perfect peace (Isa 26:3) to the one who trusts solely in the OBJECT of their faith, for "the one who believes in him will never be put to shame" (Romans 9:33).

“And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭23‬:‭39‬-‭43‬! Im not trolling,I would like your perspective on the Thief on the Cross. He did not have any good works, he couldn’t get down to do anything. Yet Jesus said this thief would be in paradise with Jesus today! Why did Jesus say this? I can only see one thing that this thief did in order to be with Jesus. The other thief did not do this one thing!

HT to commenter @HAL9000-su1mz : SEVEN THINGS DONE BY THE THIEF ON THE CROSS 1. He admitted his guilt. (Personal Penance) 2. He agreed that his punishment was just (Suffering Just Temporal Punishment) 3. He rebuked his fellow thief - a spiritual act of mercy (Public Defense of Christ) 4. He proclaimed Jesus to be innocent (Public Confession of Christ's Sinlessness) 5. He declared that Jesus was a King (Submission to Christ's Lordship) 6. He declared that Jesus' Kingdom was not of this earth (Acknowledgement of Messiahship) 7. He asked Jesus for mercy and salvation (The First Work!) Is that the silence of "faith alone"?

Love is part of good works. Paul even said love is greater than faith. Faith is a good work as well. The thief showed Jesus love by defending him. He didn't just ignore the mockery. If he did and he said everything else, I don't believe that Jesus would have said the same to him. Also, the thief didn't go to heaven that day, Jesus didn't even go to heaven that day. Wherever Jesus went that day, that's where the thief went.

@@KennyBurchard So what you just sent me is saying the thief Believed that Jesus Christ is the Son of God which is Faith Alone. This thief put his Faith,Belief,Trust in Jesus Christ to Save him after he left this world. There is no work in Believing or Trusting that Jesus will save them, just Faith! Remember no one comes to Jesus Christ unless the Father draws them! John 6:44.How many good works would a person have to do to know that they are actually saved? Good works are an outflow of my Faith to benefit others, but our salvation is of the Lord not us. What is your take on the phrase when Jesus says It is Finished? What part do Believers work in their Salvation and what part does God the Father through Jesus Christ work in our Salvation?
@KennyBurchard
@KennyBurchard 3 күн бұрын
No - Remember from the Biblical teaching outlined here in the video: Jesus said "The work of God is to believe on the one God sent" (Jn. 6:29). But that work requires the prevenient grace of God in order to be accomplished (Phil. 2:13). We must cooperate with God's grace in order to see the benefits (that is what is meant by "work of faith" (1 Thes. 1:3, 2 Thes. 1:11). The theif on the cross did not have "faith apart from works" or "faith without works" -- rather, he did the works commanded by Jesus, beginning with the 7 things outlined in the previous comment. This was no mere mental ascent to the truth. He gave what he had left of his life fully to Jesus, and did so publicly while spiked to a cross. As James 2:22 puts it, his... "faith was active along with his works, and faith was brought to completion by the works." The thief on the cross is a great example of what faith and works look like together - even when spiked to the cross. His was not "faith alone" which cannot justify. Remember what the Bible teaches - James 2:24 - You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. Christian truth (found in its fullness in the Church founded by Jesus) will help keep you from the error of what scripture negates; "faith alone." Never forget. The only time "faith alone" is ever used in the Bible, it is preceded by these two important biblical words; "Not by..."

@KennyBurchard
@KennyBurchard 3 күн бұрын
FOUR Things are true: 1. The Church has no authority (ZERO) to say that anyone has gone to hell. Only God knows who is in hell. PERIOD. End of sentence. Full stop. 2. You will never. never. never. never. find yourself in heaven if you say a prayer with your mouth and then live a life of rebellioin against Jesus Christ. 3. Any baptized Protestant who lives a life of faithfulness to Christ (and walks in all the light he/she has), and who does not enter the Catholic Church because he/she does not know that in the Catholic Church subsists the fulness of the truth may very well end up in heaven. 4. Every baptized Christian, even if separated from full communion with the Catholic Church, has a right to be regarded as a beloved brother or sister in Christ by Catholics.
