My Uncle from 50s through 90s was THE Singer rep in the north east that also did repairs... he told me that Singer made deals early on to not produce heavy duty upholstery machines which includes exterior grade fabrics... so... upholstery machines (that can do leathers, hide, pleather, naugahide, sunbrella, etc) are huge and that leaves only Sail-rite machines... which sucks due to the cost plus the specialty UV resistant thread... however... you can always find a used machine with low wear n tear n miles for less... but i know you'll pop for a new one...

For your outboard. Try Startron marine enzyme fuel stabilizer. I don’t believe in fuel additives but have been using this for two years and it keeps the outboard on my sailboat running smoothly. I was taking the carb apart multiple times ever summer before. You should get a thermacell to keep insects away. We use them in Alaska when panning for gold. They work for most flying insects.

You need a diode on the output of each of the panels in order for them not to backfeed each other, simply wiring them to a fuse means they are all still connected. There are MC4 connector inline diodes. I also recommend a DC amp clamp multilmeter so you can get info from each panel individually.

I think I may have found someone who is at least as organized and particular as I am, Teal you do us proud. I have to mention this though, you have a perfect wife who needs a new sewing machine so either buy her a Sailrite or industrial Bernina now. I have one Sailrite, two Bernina 950's and a Japanese machine that was made in 1953. The Japanese machine is all machined metal with no stamped steel. It is not as pretty but I only have to time it about every four years. The Bernina's are more expensive and they don't make the 950's but some suppliers still have new 950 machines. It is good Swiss quality and parts are easy to get. You will pay more for the Bernina but they are worth their weight in gold. Sailrite machines are assembled in the USA but the parts are made around the world. If I had a wife as talented as your wife I would get a Bernina 950 for her in a heartbeat.

Teal, just a clarification question... the solar panels look to be in parallel for each string (I looked carefully at each fuse box). I guess with 2 MPPT's you only get max power out of a string when the complete string is not in shadow. If one panel within a string is under shadow the MPPT controller cannot pull the max power out of the other panels ? To overcome this you would need a MTTP box per panel - I guess this would be prohibatively expensive.
@dougmarder3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I was wondering about that too. Maybe saving that for a future upgrade? I am also wondering if there is the possibility of corrosion due to dissimilar metals between the panels and the frame. Did Teal install nylon washers in-between? Also wondering why the hardtop support pipes could not be used as cable conduits?

Linh, good job on the sewing! I took my degree in Fashion Design, and learned there to never use pins to sew because they can be dangerous! Your machine may need the tensioning adjusted because of the velcro thickness and the outdoor fabric thickness. You do a great job of designing the stuff you need to be sewn on your boat! Yes, and you definitely need a sailrite for the boat!
@rl38983 жыл бұрын
Yes Linh, come on look carefully at your machine, I bet its a simple tension adjustment or loose screw or maybe lubrication that's giving you the jams. Sewing machines used by good sewers last for 40 years or more. Have a glass and look at the possibles, I bet you will solve it !!

In your heavily shadowed environment, you'd make a lot more power by using Tigo optimizers, you could mount them down near the panel fuse blocks. Reason being is since they're all parallel if you have one panel shadowed you're going to backfeed the shadowed panel and waste power. You could get most of the same benefit by using diode fuses in your fuse block.

Love the install. Well done. One structural concern. At the base and at the weld of a vertical structural support, you made a huge hole. It would have been so much better if you had made the hole at the bottom of the horizontal support, vice the side, or just moved the location of the hole port or starboard an inch or two. Good news is you have two outboard vertical supports that should carry most of the load. Please keep an eye on that horizontal tube for cracks. If you start to crack, you will need to have a yard weld in some doublers to prevent failure.
@genewaddlerandomstuff21223 жыл бұрын
I see your point about the hole and it could be a problem if it was holding more weight but the hardtop hardly weighs anything and the frame for the panels is spread over a wide area. 🙂

The fuse panel is not a combiner box. Each wire need a blocking diode so when there is a chadow in a panel the the amps won't start traveling to that panel. Each panel has a bypass diodes for connecting in series but it won't prevent the back feed. With a C clamp meter can be checked if a panel is back feeding.
