TLDR ⚡ 1) Set iron to 400 C 2) Get a nice blob of solder 3) Coat wire in flux 4) Burn for 2 seconds.

@axk1

Thanks! I don't have separate flux to cover the wire in, only flux core solder so I couldn't get it to work until I started adding solder right there as I was touching the iron to the wire. Otherwise the flux just evaporated instantly. Also when I brought the iron all the way up to 480 it eventually melted the wire )

Many thanks to you. Just to let you know that over here, UK, it's very hard to get leaded solder and doing it this way doesn't work using unleaded solder, or rather I cannot get it to stick.
@dephekt_
@dephekt_ Жыл бұрын
Make sure you're using plenty of flux and that your iron tip is clean/not heavily oxidized. Oxidation is the usual cause of poor wetting, whether it's leaded or not. You may need to hold the solder ball for a longer period of time on the wire to boil off all the enamel. Stick your iron tip through your brass wire cleaner a couple times and reapply solder, then repeat the process of burning off the enamel again. If you see a ton of black/oxidation and smoke coming off it still then it's still burning up the enamel.

Can I simply solder wires on the circuit after completing these steps?
@coolaj86
@coolaj86 4 жыл бұрын
walker #36410 I’d suggest putting a small dab of flux on the copper or tin pad on the board and then applying a small amount of fresh solder. If there is already old solder on the pad (especially if it’s lead-free), you’ll want to put some flux on some solder wick (such as goot wick) and clean off the old solder before tinning.

You may need to clean your soldering iron by tinning it and cleaning it a few times. You're probably not getting good heat transfer.

Wait a second, you've just used flux, that's it? FLUX?!?!?! These little suckers caused me endless headache when repairing cables.
@coolaj86
@coolaj86 10 ай бұрын
It's not the flux alone, it's primarily the right temperature - high enough to melt the enamel, low enough to not make the wire brittle (which is a nice wide margin, but starts higher than I realized).

My solder simply wont stay on the tip of the iron. It just drops as soon as it melts. How do i fix this?
@coolaj86
@coolaj86 9 ай бұрын
It's probably oxidized or otherwise corroded and you either need to clean the tip or get a new tip. A good way to clean it is to get it as hot as it gets and then slide and twirl it across a damp sponge and then dip it in flux and repeat, and then tin it, wipe it, and tin it again. It could also be that your solder is old and corroded and needs to be replaced. Always clean and tin your tip before putting it away. And always put your solder in a sealed bag to prevent humidity from getting to it. If you want a cheap replacement iron, search my channel for "soldering kit".

@coolaj86
@coolaj86 2 жыл бұрын
Define "normal". Do you mean coated orange rather than coated red? Same procedure. Unless it's so fine that it burns away, in which case I don't know. But if it says that it'll burn away when soldered on the label, then it probably will - you just gotta heat 'er up a bit more first.

Instead of "Spectacles, Testicles, Watch, and Wallet" you'll need to do "Magnifier, Strippers, Flux, and Iron" - so that it's less of a cross and more of a zig-zag power / lightning symbol. That's what works best for me at least.

@coolaj86

Don't be fooled by the tiny tips. I'd use the biggest tip that would fit to get the most heat transfer that I could, and then I'd use some wick (or even just the tip of the iron, perhaps a smaller tip) to remove any solder bridges. Also, search "smd practice kit" and give one of those a try with your setup before ruining something important. Once you get familiar with it you'll be surprised how practicing under a microscope enhances your fine motor control - even if your hands aren't particularly steady. You can be better than you'd think.
