Also ... be fair to your forefathers ... they brought them actual civilisation (at the very least, a close Anglican approximation thereof) ... not "civilisation as we know it". "Civilisation as we know it" is a bastardised Marxist-Globalist innovation that has next to nothing to do with what the men who marched to this little ditty believed in or fought for, for that matter. The British, through practical experience, also learned that not every man is in fact equal to the task of maintaining the level of civilisation the Empire necessarily brought with it. Most needed supervision. The rest tried to blow it all up. It was only really natural that the competition would seize upon the latter. Those rather nasty conflicts in Europe did not help matters much either, I'd hazard to suggest.
