@@seamustroy4747 Why did the Irish come to England and bomb innocent civilians? Soldiers ordered to do their duty faces a barrage of petrol bombs and bricks from 100s and you expect them not to retaliate? would you? All that killing and hurt and overall it didnt you anywhere did it. UK still rule NI. Alot more into it than a few biased silly comments from republicans. Bombs planted in hospitals! WTF and you still call the British. IRA sent to Gibraltar to plot and blow up British soldiers, then get themselves shot dead and the British get the blame!. Why send them to Gibraltar in the first place.

There is much that I would disagree with in terms of how the British army behaved during the war but that is neither here nor there. These are soldiers' memories, horrors and realities from that time. It puts a lot of what happened into perspective. It allows me to understand. It was a dirty war. It was a long, slow, dark time. The scars will never go away, entirely, but they might just fade enough to be tolerable.

Australian boy in the 1970’s saw it on TV felt so sorry for all the Irish people. My English Dad said the troops did not want to be there, the IRA wanted them out, the Irish people too and the British people too, only reason for deployment was to protect the Loyalist side. It was an age old Irish domestic problem. In the 1970’s the Politician’s should have started a de escalation program and made effective and serious attempts to have peace talks, even involve independent mediation ie the UN would have saved many lives.

Recent history proves your point. There was never gratitude from many loyalists - just expectation. There are still many who expect Britain to send the Cavalry back to the six counties (and beyond) for no other reason than they believe they can. The conflict in NI was brutal and unforgiving. Many of us, now in our winter years , still live with the nightmares of what happened. No one with a modicum of sense would entertain a similar life for our children. Yet, today, Stormont lies empty.

The people that the IRA claimed to be fighting to defend regularly voted for political parties that begged the IRA to stop their endless violence. And the civil rights movement never threw their support behind them. In fact, the IRA saw them as a rival and a threat for recruitment and persecuted their leaders.

Shut up you silly bastard, different units were rotated round different deployments. No single unit was 'less able' than the next.If a particular regiment was due to go wherever, that's where it went.Levels of training had nothing to do with it.In depot we were told some would go over the water, some wouldn't. You went where your regiment went.

So those soldiers in the Dropping Well got to see what one of their hellfire or javelin missiles does to an Afghan village (Iraqi village/ Malaysian village/ omani village/ Yemeni village/ Kenyan village …….I should have started in alphabetical order) If the devastation comes from a fighter bomber or artillery , it seems to be more respectable ? It takes far more courage to carry it to its target. The British who launch their bombs from 30,000 feet or from a tube 20 miles away ? Id suggest ask yourself would you carry it ? No one accuses those soldiers of using "human shields", knowing how much danger theyre putting civilians in. It was SOP TO use human shields. Every squaddie that served there was told to patrol from civilian to civilian to window- as in the words of a Leftennant " An IRA gunman is less likely to take a pop if he thinks he might hit a civilian". If you don't believe me I can direct you to photos , back when the camera didn't lie. Those Afghans fighting against insurmountable odds, I have respect for despite their backwardness. It wasn't long ago that Europe backward in the same way. There could not be a stronger message than a BOMB planted by average people that your military occupation is NOT justified and that your guns are not welcome. There cannot be a STRONGER indication that we are a separate country than being divide BY A SEA !!! Ever heard the expression "Oceans apart" ? Its not an ocean , but connected to the Atlantic and that sea has been there since the last ice age.

The soldiers who died in the Droppin' Well abomination, were little more than kids on the whole! Probably - in the main - from 'broken' families too! They likely saw 'soldering' as a way to escape their upbringings and similarly, likely had little interest in the historical/political reasons why they were being ordered to do as they did in the first place. That they were MURDERED whilst relaxing off-duty, speaks volumes to me about the patriotic 'IRA' and its cowardly attitude! As a 'Brit' I have always said that we should have declared war on the 'IRA' from the start - and wiped them out to a man/woman! After all, was THAT not the 'war' they wanted? IMHO - that is the 'war' we should have given them! Regarding your final comment but one, vis-a-vis, us being divided by a sea; don't forget: If we - the 'Brits' - hadn't employed so Many Irish workers down the Centuries, then the chances are that the Irish wouldn't have bred so many offspring and therefore wouldn't have spread across the world as they have. Also, as a nation with little in the way of 'exports' with which to trade, Ireland has always been something of a 'B' player (if not worse!) on the world stage! Finally, your last comment speaks volumes to me! It confirms - if I ever needed such confirmation - that until many Irish people are willing to accept and FORGIVE what happened in the past, then the way forward for Ireland will remain! FYI - the last Ice Age ENDED some 11,000 years ago!

@@georgebuller1914 So , dont attack off duty soldiers ? Well , thats a new one !!!! And a pathetic excuse And the BA and the foreign office and Whitehall did refer to it as a war. Irish offspring spread across the World ? Yeah.....who scattered them there ? Your fucking army and navy did, and it too spread across 1/3 of the globe. So, screw youre outdated rules for war that you make for youre own convenience. Did any of your bombs ever have warnings ? So who are the "terrorists" ?? Take care of your own country. It needs help. (in case you havnt noticed)
