Well, techically, 9017 is still 1895 vintage, just rebuilt in 1938 with Dukedog frames. It's like giving a torso a new pair of legs.

Just to say the Cambrian Railway is Mid & North Cymru. Much of their network ran through Mid rather than North, excluding the Cambrian Coast line section from Dovey Junction to Pwllheli which is the part that actually ventures into what is classed as our nation's North by us Cymro

I seem to recall that some of the funds to but 9017 were raised by Richard Gomm Limited the badge making company which made railway badges in Birmingham. They sent out a leaflet about the purchase of the loco with each badge they posted out to people who ordered from them. I believe that the price required for the purchase by B. R. was around £1,500. Very cheap by todays standards!

Surprisingly good engines despite their rather comic appearance. I have a number of b&w photos of no. 9004 around Criccieth in 1958. 9017 should definitely not have a name and quite probably never had one. The nameplate really belongs to Castle no.5060. It's difficult to equate the current appearance of 9017, all spruced up in GW green, nameplate and all, with the rather grubby BR-black of my photos and memories. I know which I prefer. Sorree!

Pretty interesting engine. The engines from the GWR I've always been interested in were their Dean Single class 4-2-2's. It's too bad none of them have survived. They look like lovely engines to me.

There was a replica made in the 80s for an event. It was fabricated so it couldn’t steam and didn’t have full driving wheels. The tender was taken away and used for something else, but the loco part of the replica still exists today.

The name Earl of Berkeley was taken off and transferred to a new Castle class, almost as soon as it was put on. It didn't carry a nameplate until the Bluebelle Railway renovated her.

These engines were remarkably good considering their rather comic appearance. I have a couple of logs of their runs and they were no joke. I also took a couple of B&W photos of no. 9004 at Criccieth in 1958. With their very light weight they could be a bit slippy but they were reliable and steamed well. No 9017 never actually carried its name even though it was planned to so I don't think it should carry one now. I'm quite chuffed (no pun intended) that one has been preserved.

The Dukedogs are the only engines so far that I can actually consider hybrid classes.

It's sad that she's out of action now. She was once one of their star engines, always attracting a crowd. Oddly, she was also always the one to be trotted out for documentary film crews looking for a stereotypically "Victorian" engine, even though the Bluebell also had their SECR C and O1 Classes, which arguably look more the part. I do hope they're able to bring her into the workshops soon, although with the number of projects on now, including the Beachy Head Atlantic new-build, the Ivatt 2MT conversion, the Schools Class restoration, overhauling one of the P Classes, possibly even rebuilding Sir Archibald Sinclair's firebox for the third sodding time, it seems unlikely that the old Earl here will see steam again anytime soon. Still, if they are able to get around to her, I hope they'll spare the time to properly tune her whistle; I always thought her good looks were spoiled by having such an awful raspy voice.

He got decapitated on a signal gantry near Balham. He looked out of class 442 (Gatwick express) guard drop light, the train was traveling at 90mph.
