Another new UK steam engine gets the 'Steam Locos In Profile' treatment, as we look at the GWR Saint 4-6-0s. 77 were built in the early 1900s, none were preserved but a 78th was completed in 2019 using parts from a Hall.
This is an original documentary produced by me and my friends, starring my creations and myself.

Getting new SLiPs every couple of months this year has been a godsend, even if they’ve since become privatised. It makes me wonder if we’ll get anymore Paint Your Engine videos.

I started work on BR in 73, in my teens. The older men around me were all old school father to son characters. Even then in the very early days of preservation the Saint was proposed as a 'new build' from a Hall. Even more radical was a County rebuild from an LMS 8f proposal !!!! One such rebuild did come about on the West Somerset with the rebuilding of a large prarie tank into a mogul. Again fuelled by the number of praries saved. A great video, love the style. 👍👍👍

In '74 I was at Barry, liberating washout plugs from an unmodified Hall to one alongside, the subject of a preservation attempt. We put the plugs into the tender for safety. In the end, the Hall became the subject of another rebuild. I cannot recall the names of either loco or what the rebuild became. All I have from that is a cabside handrail in use holding a bathtowel. The pretty fireiron yoke and chain disappeared in a house move...

Oh yes, a review of another new built steam locomotive, hope the next new built steam locomotive to be reviewed is Tornado. The Saint is my personal favourite tender loco from the 1900s and I really love the loco with the compartment coaches at Didcot every time I visit.

Always loved the Saints. Just as sacrilegious as using a Hall to make one I removed the wheels from a 00 Flying Scotsman to convert a Triang Hornby 'Albert Hall' into a Saint in the 1970s. I still have it somewhere.

Great video - I particularly enjoyed the anecdotes of Great Western men who worked with these in period, brought a new dimension to/ something I didn’t appreciate or know to the Saint story.

When Cardiff's last Saint was 'called home' (to Swindon scrap) the shed polished her up a treat. She looked so good that at Swindon they simply put her onto fast goods duty ...until the 'powers that be' discovered where the loco had go to. I modelled Saint Benedict from a old cast West Coast kit, throwing away many parts that should never have been whitemetal. I scratchbuilt the EM underframe and boiler fittings and the bogie tender off 'The Bear' (as in 1935). She has drop down footplate as the later Saints appeared a bit more decent with the skirts a bit lower.

Great to see the GWR Saint finally completed! I always thought it was a shame that, along with older pre-grouping era designs like the Saints, the younger Hawksworth era 4-6-0s were lost to the cutter's torch. Hope we can see you cover the Counties in the near future!

Loved this. I first saw Lady of Legend at Didcot in 2022. Standing next to those 6ft 8 drivers was awe inspiring (the more so because she was parked next to the blue King). That autumn, she was a guest at the Great Central gala, where they ran her double-headed with a Hall, which was a wonderful sight. Thanks Chris.

“Babe wake up!!! Chris Eden-Green just posted a new Steam Locos in Profile Video!!!” Seriously though, you are a master of your craft at these. Even though the videos involving just one locomotive, you somehow do not make it boring to see the same exact loco again and again and again. You are a fantastic story teller and always make us fellow steam locomotive enthusiasts smile, reminding us why we love these beautiful machines so much!

Good old Churchward. Without that Swindon Meccano system of his, Lady of the Night would've been a Tornado level challenge ... and we know how many std gauge new builds have made it into service so far. Even 42424 had a boiler and tender on hand (both in need of rebuilding) to give the Brighton Atlantic project a kick start.

Great episode! I’m not the biggest western fan in the world, but can’t help but appreciate how much the Saints changed loco technology due to its size and three cylinder design. I am interested in purchasing some DVDs, and I was wondering if you mail them as oversized letters, as I live in Canada and don’t want to pay crazy postage.

There was even an attempt (not sure if it's true or not) made to preserve another Saint - no. 2937 'Clevedon Court', in 1953. A man named Sir Arthur Elton even went so far as to buy this engine and transport it to - ahem - Clevedon Court. Unfortunately, this was as far as it went, before the engine was immediately handed back to BR, sent back to Swindon and cut up for scrap.

Regarding the Saint's being "second mouse", they were actually the third, as the NER Class S (LNER B13) 4-6-0s made their debut in 1899, though they were nowhere near as good as the Saints.

Fourth if you count Dean's Crocodile of 1896, yes. But the point of them being a pivotal design still stands.

Excellent episode as always, Chris. But a question did pop into my head in regards to comparing the Jones Goods and Saints. If those 2 are 1st and 2nd mouse, what does that make the Highland railway Castle's? Those were passenger versions of the Jones goods built between 1900-1917, so around the same time as the Saints, and like many a loco from the Highland, all are lost to time for right now anyway. That'd make quite the sight, actually, a Highland Castle on a double-header with a Great Western Castle.
