Solid Wood White Oak Bookshelves

In this video I build two solid white oak bookshelves. These bookshelves are made with a simple dado design that is reinforced with oak dowels. The lumber was locally sourced from a tree that was an urban yard tree and full of nails creating some unique iron staining as well as a challenge to make safe for tools.

Nice, exactly the kind of thing I want to make. I'll be using plywood since I don't have a planer or jointer. I wish you had gone over jointing the pieces more, like how you handled the other side since the wood was too wide for the jointer.

Using a square to rest your yellow straight edge against would save you time on your shelf layout

Very nice! I would have struggled to keep glue smudges off the back plywood as I tried to put it in place. How did you avoid this?

I spent a lot of time before hand figuring out how to drop the back in place and not move it. That, plus a little luck

How wide can I make dado shelves like this, but with cabinet grade 3/4 inch plywood, before heavy books cause sagging?

It depends on how you reinforce it. If it is glued to the face frame and the back panel 3’ isn’t a problem. Wider than that the strength starts to go down. You can do it, but you may need additional reinforcement

Are projects like this staind and finished with a spray? Or wiped on

This one was stained by the customer, but spraying or wiping are both good options. Brushing on is not an option for me if it can be avoided.

I very rarely buy pre-finished. I have a couple times, but that’s it.
