An entire family was left screaming in shock when their military son returned home from duty to surprise everyone at his brother's wedding. Brothers Jake and Billy Winn, from New York, are extremely close, and so it was always Billy's dream for Jake to be present on his big day. For the past two and a half years, Jake, 21, has served as a private first class in the United States Army in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, with limited time off. Jake hadn't been home for six months, and because the previous occasion he was home was for his stepfather's funeral - a period of leave that lasted longer than expected - Jake was unsure if he could make Billy's wedding in the same calendar year. Having spoken to his leadership, though, Jake was granted the extra time off he requested. He decided he wanted to surprise his family, and so he only told his father, George, 49, who helped plan his son's trip home to New York State. On September 9, at Billy's wedding at The Barn on Hyder Creek in Richfield Springs, New York, the groom gathered for a family photo with the likes of his sister, Sara, 19. As the group stood posing, Jake, dressed in military attire, walked in, causing everything to scream in complete shock at the surprise.

I had to laugh when Jacob was talking about sleeping in the same room as his brother since they were kids, because it was the same for me and my older brother. We also had bunk beds (I was on the Top bunk), and then changed to single beds, which were pushed close together. It was only when my brother went to University that I got the room to myself! But our bond has stayed the same.

Thank you for your service, but I have a question. You've been in the service for three years and you are still a private, maybe a pfc? What they heck have you been doing to be denied standar promotions. You should at the very minimum be a sp4 or corporal depending on unit. I think I saw you wearing cav boots, so......

I'm happy for you and your Brother but did you say you were in the Army for almost 3 years and you only an E-2. I was in during Vietnam and I was a SGT E-5 in three years. The promotions must really suck these days as you should have been promoted automatically to at least an E-4 in three years. I must be missing something

There are quotas now. They only allow so many at such and such levels. Plus there are limited chances for deployment to war zones. My brother was in Nam in the early 60’s. Thanks to two tours, getting wounded, and being a Green Beret, at his medical discharge in less than 3 yrs he ranked Sgt First Class. Whereas my son was a Marine 2002-06. Tour in Afghanistan and Iraq. Heavy weapons, squad leader. Purple Heart. They tried to get him to sergeant before he was up, but there were no “spots” available.
