Hal forgot to take into account that really skinny moustaches, widows' peaks and permanent grin/grimaces are the result of Earth narrative tropes. I mean if I had been in Hal's shoes I'd probably have gone full sinestro much, much earlier. The guardians are insane. PS: for anyone that doesn't know. During Emerald Twilight Hal snaps and murders the entire green lantern corp during a PTSD attack, in a move so poorly placed and handled that they pretty much immediately retconned it 3 different ways hoping at least 1 made sense. Which is extra funny due to the fact that Hal had sooooo many reasons to snap. I mean hell I'm pretty sure it would've been easier to make it feel earned than it was to eff it up that badly.

I imagine the reason Sinestro managed to stay undercover for so long is that there's so many people of different planets that his appearance and name that raises red flags to humans seems normal to the rest of the Green Lantern Corps

Well from old comics and some retcons. He was a long standing genuinely good Green Lantern. The only early signs if any Guardians actually paid attention was how he later on started handling his quadrant and especially his home world... After a while he took over his planet as a dictator and then spread to said quadrant he was suppose to protect. He was prior to that close friends with Abin Sur who was of course was Hal Jordan's predecessor. There was in 90s/00s some stories to give a more tragic back story to the previously mostly one dimensional Sinestro. Some of it stuck while still he being evil and terrible. There was a run some years ago where he was Green Lantern again teamed up with Hal Jordan. It wasn't that bad in some story bits. Still he is better off a villain and his view on order is full on authoritarian.

Picasso was in his late 50s during WW2. He was a child prodigy with a gift for realism. In fact, Picasso's father José was a professional painter who quit when his teenaged son's career had surpassed his own. Thus, you have to understand that Cubism and the other modern styles Picasso pursued were part of a gradual evolution that had been going on both within Picasso himself and throughout the art world. It's kind of hard to explain succinctly, but a great deal of it is about brushwork and color choice and what kind of brush strokes and passages of paint you choose to put next to each other. It's sort of a learned grammar. So there is a lot of technique going on with Picasso's works that to understand or appreciate you have to either paint a lot yourself for a long time… or watch a lot of serious painting for even longer… or closely examine at a lot of paintings from that time period for a really REALLY long time. (Plus there's a lot of cultural stuff that is lost on modern, non-Spanish/French audiences because the motifs and idioms and references aren't as obvious to us - like all of the hidden visual symbols Picasso made in his work to… ahem… _neutering_ his father… artistically speaking). So yeah, Picasso and most of his contemporaries were talented artists trying to push the boundaries of creativity in a post-photography world. In a serious and sincere fashion. It was the later generations who messed it all up and turned it into a money-laundering scheme. If you want a big target to point at, use Andy Warhol. The king of BS artists, inspiring so much of the milquetoast blah that results from teaching young artists they can compensate for an under-developed piece by thinking up a really cute little speech to justify it with all the right words peppered in. There are museums with Warhol's work in them that proudly display lies he made up on their placards next to his over-priced work they spent so much money acquiring. And those lies will go down in history as if they were facts. One example: There is a series of films & photographs by Warhol that MOMA says are intentionally blurry because he meant it as an homage to amateurs. But if you go with one of the former factory girls, they will tell you "That's BS! I was there that day. They're blurry because Andy didn't know how to use the camera." Never confuse a Picasso for a Warhol.

Apparently Sinesteo became the dictator of his home world of Korugar because it was a very dysfunctional badly run place to live as well as regularly being invaded by alien invaders from other planets. Like in one version of the story Hal Jordan finds out Sinestro became a dictator when Hal is sent by the Guardians of the Universe to help Sinetro defend Korugar from alien invaders called the Khund (sort of like an interstellar alien version of Genghis Khan's Golden Horde.)
