Most of what you hit ran away and probably suffered that's not pest control should be one head shot instant kill

I get this comment sometimes from people that have never shot California ground squirrels before, especially with air rifles. I do take head shots when available. And while head shots work, a squirrel will flop around for a minute or two before they expire. Spine shots are instant. But the spine on a squirrel is 1/4" wide. Not likely to happen on the regular. Squirrels are tough. When you see a squirrel run off, most of the time they are just using their instinct to get to their safe place, their hole, no matter what. Most do. Those squirrels are dead, they just don't know it. Occasionally, we get a bad shot. Everyone does. We choose to show those shots because that is real world when hunting. Lots of hunting channels don't show their misses or less than optimal shots. We could easily edit those shots out, and you would never see them, or even know they happened, but we don't. On the subject of pest control. They land owners want the squirrels and other pests gone. They could care less if we gassed them (not legal here) drowned them in their holes (not likely to happen) poison them (not legal here) or shoot them (barley legal here). We do the best we can, and get as many as we can. The land owners are happy. If you get a chance, please send me some links of your California ground squirrel hunting head shots. Let me know your techniques and tips. I'm always looking for a better way to do something. I checked your channel to see them, but didn't see any of those type videos there. Maybe you have another channel?

Very well said from someone who has many many years of hunting like myself.
