This makes me think about my father. He was an attorney but always wanted to be a forest ranger. He loved art; Ansel Adams photography and Remington sculptures. He taught us kids to be stewards of the land. The appreciation I have of life comes from him. This I pass on to my children. Thank you for sharing..

A lightning storm caught us just as we arrived at Thousand Island Lake. My friends barely got their tents up next to the lake. I covered my pack and headed up the mountain nearby where it looked like there were some caves to shelter in. Big, big mistake!! The lightning focused on that mountain. It was striking all around me. I did find a "cave" of sorts, but it was shallow. At least I could see the lightning strikes that bombarded that mountain for what seemed like forever. I thought I was going to die. Literally. I was scratching out messages in the sand to loved ones. The lightning was striking much much closer than I had ever experienced before or since. Just a few yards away. Loud, powerful, tree-splitting power. I'll never forget it. Like John Muir's experience being up in a tree during a storm, it did give me an up-close, firsthand, right-in-my-face, no-escape experience of that power. And it was sustained. I had an unusual and powerful dream that night as well. I was only fifteen at the time.

Never second guess your gut feeling. I was at that very spot last year. I had planned a trip to Thousand Island Lake, and we opted to camp just north of Shadow Lake the first night (my son slipped and tweaked his ankle. The next morning we noted that the forecast called for thunderstorms and decided the better course of action would be to head back into Mammoth. The next day, when we would have been at just under 10K feet, the sky unzipped, and it poured rain for the rest of the afternoon. Later in the trip, we met a couple of hikers who stayed where we were planning to hike, and they told us that they were hunkered down in their tent for 12 hours because of the weather.

It was pointed out I made a typo on one of my end cards typing "life" instead of "like". Rookie move letting that slip by. :) I know you all will get what I mean. This was my first edit of a 4K video on my new software and it gave me some challenges. On another note...I am getting more comfortable with each solo trip I do. Being in the Sierra feels like home to me and I feel free from fear out there. Other than a healthy fear of lightning. ;) Thanks for watching everyone!

Great video . I just completed that same hike on 8/29. Glad to see they put the sign up at the outflow of Ediza for the water crossing. I personally observed a hiker take a nasty fall on the boulder scramble at which point I backtracked and followed mule poop to find the water crossing. The folks at the permit station make to mention of all this. When Ranger Jake and his beautiful dog Sierra checked my permit at Garnett Lake the next day I mentioned all this to him and he said he would check into this. I am impressed he obviously took action. Thank you Jake and thank you Catherine for a great video I can watch and relive my adventure.
@CatherineGregoryAdventures
@CatherineGregoryAdventures 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. When I did this hike in 2017 we contacted the ranger station and urged them to warn hikers about this. I received no warning on this trip when I grabbed my permit. I had to ask and obviously that's only because I already knew about it. I'm glad they modified that sign.

For-what-it's-worth: Back in the summer of 1970, I went backpacking this same location with my GF and her family. It was great. We were suppose to have lots of bugs: they were all gone. Only had 1 small rain storm, too. We might have camped around where you camped. Fished in the lake and it was super. We stayed a week. Thumb's UP. Thanks.

Love , Love , Love the Sierras. As kids we would look for pools in the rivers where the sun was shining on and we'd get in that ice cold water and swim (bob around) in the sun filled pools, but if a shadow went over we could not stay in as it got instantly unbearably cold....but we managed to stay in the sun most of the time. Spent days in the Sierras and didn't see another person, I did a lot of solo hiking and backpacking. Those sure were the days I love watching your vids these days it brings back a flood of good memories. Keep living the good life Cat, Cheers!....oh BTW, There were times when it rained for a couple days....I was always the type to not let it chase me away and it was just a whole different adventure to me. Just couldn't cut my adventures short. I'm weird that way LoL.

2 nights solo, impressive. Nature makes you feel more and more comfortable as time moves on. Imagine native americans lived their lives surrounded by the natural right from the outset till the end of days. I always see how indigenous people walked there as nature is basically the same as it was 500 or even 1000 years ago in all these intact forests, mountains etc. Same viewpoint can be applied anywhere on the Earth, if it is not a man-made natural landscape, it looks the same but people were different =D If there were people at all.. who knows. Anyway...

I lived and worked in Yosemite, for a few years, and lived in Oakhurst, CA for a few more, and spent years hiking the mountains. Did many hikes in the Ansel Adams, but missed the hike you're now doing, so thanks for doing a nice job of showing us this magnificent trail. Wonderful video and still images Catherine, you are now truly following in the footsteps of the legend . Over the years I've researched quite a lot regarding Adams his work his lifestyle and abilities. It kind of brings things into perspective that his camera alone probably weighed more than your entire back pack.Your right in saying it was one of his all time favorite places he did a rare session of color work here in 1945 using the new commercially introduced Kodachrome the images are contained in a book called A. A. in color. When on the trail he lived in a very frugal way as there was no available products that we all take for granted these days he was a master in method often imitated but never surpassed Thank you sharing one of my own personal favorite locations in the entire world.

Hi from Mike. Finally got to look at your video. I had a pretty good day on Thursday hiking to Davis Lakes then cross country to the west end of 1000 Island Lake and continuing cross country over Garnet Pass to Garnet Lake where I camped. Only light rain off and on and beautiful views from my camp at Garnet Lake of mist shrouded peaks in the evening that were lit up in reds and pinks the following morning. Many more days of hiking after that. It was nice to meet you and share a short bit of trail with you. p.s. there are wild onions along the trail to Ediza Lake.
