For those of you not familiar with Skynrd, the opening line “if I leave here tomorrow, will you still remember me” was said by Allen Collins wife during their wedding ceremony. At the wedding reception they performed this song live for the first time in front of an audience. Free Bird had already been mostly written but during that performance they added that line and changed several lyrics. Absolutely amazing. Collins helped write the majority of their stuff with Ronnie before Ed King joined. Ed King is very underrated. As a musician and writer. I know many skynrd fans don’t care for him but he gave a lot despite being not treated fairly by some of the guys. I’m not an Ed King stand and prefer Collins and Steve Gaines over him. Saddest thing, Steve Gaines was the most skilled musician. Incredible guitar, lyrists and singer. Ronnie and Collins used to talk about how Gaines was elevate and the plan was to take Gaines and make him lead singer due to Ronnie having tumors on his vocal cords and having to cancel many concerts. Breaks my heart. Never got to see Gaines reach a 10th of his potential
@WhizzingFish1211 ай бұрын
@@turdferguson8227Good comment. I've been listening to them for 50 years and you are spot on. The re-energizing that Gaines brought to the band is so clearly apparent on Street Survivors and OMFTR. He played almost as well as Rossington in his own style, and almost as well as Collin in his own style, while also being a kick-ass slide guitarist and a great country picker. Plus wrote and sang. I'd have loved to hear what their next album sounded like. And I also agree that Ed King is highly underrated. His riffy style was a good complement to R&C and he was a very good songwriter too. He was just an outsider to a group of Florida rednecks :-)

Billy actually wrote the piano part before he was a member of the band ( he worked for them as a roadie.) One night after a show it was raining and they could not load out the equiptment , there was a piano in the bar. He told the band if I had to play Freebird this is how I would play it. This video for me not only captures a great Lynyrd Skynyrd performance but also does well to capture the feel of 1970s era outdoor rock concerts/festivals. Both times I saw LS were at outdoors shows. In July,1974 at Ozark Music Festival along with several hundred thousand in attendance. And in summer 1976 outside of Chicago at Hawthorn Racetrack also on the bill were Yes, Frampton and Gary Wright. Some bands don’t come across well in large settings such as seen here. But Lynyrd Skynyrd seemed made for it…this was their “stage” …. they owned it and the crowd.

Skynyrd is my all-time favorite band, followed closely by ZZ Top and Pink Floyd. Some will argue that their performance at Knebworth in England was better, but IMO this is the very best for this song. This shows off Billy Powell's classical piano training and how the "3 Guitar Army" of Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, and Steve Gaines could jam together like no one else, and you can't forget Leon Wilkerson on bass. Then you have Artimus Pyle on drums just driving it home. Ronnie was at the top of his game singing and performing his heart out. They are all gone now except of Artimus who is still rockin' with his own band and covers many of LS standards. Just couldn't wait for the look on your face when they ripped into that guitar performance. Fly high, Freebirds, Fly high.

There are some great videos out there discussing the evolution of this song. One interesting thing I learned was Gary Rossington, the slide guitar, would de tune the instrument, backing off the lower E string to give a doubling of the sound on the slide. He described how in the early days, when he only had one guitar, they played this song last because it was easier for him to do that. I was fortunate enough to see these guys about 4 months before this concert. My first rock concert at 16, and still one of my most cherished memories.

I have seen a lot of reactions to this performance. All reactors acknowledge the greatness of the singer, drummer, & pianist. However, while recognizing the amazing guitar work, they don't seem to realize how special and unique it is that all three guitarists are good enough to take the lead, and they do it here, although the camera does mostly focus on just the one. Also, how rare & awesome is it that a bass player is so talented that he can nearly take the lead? On top of their talent & natural abilities, they were so well rehearsed that what most take to be random jamming is actually smooth reproduction of what they recorded in the studio. All these things together made them the best, and that is why their music has lasted and continues to amaze new listeners more than 40 years later.

Millie, I was 10 years old in 1977..... the perfect age for Star Wars, and THIS kind of music. We had it SO good back then.... and didn't even know it. Performances like this were standard, not "rare". It was an absolute experience going to a show like this. Didn't matter if it was a small club, or a stadium show. Your political stance didn't matter, what you wore didn't matter, what you did for a living didn't matter, your age didn't matter.... all that mattered was that you were there to experience live music, the roar of the crowd, and being with others who shared your love for that music. I've been to shows in local clubs, mid-sized venues, and stadium shows. I've been in mosh pits, and sitting in a seat listening to "easy listening" music. These are memories I will carry with me until the day I die. Hell, I even "threw the lights" at a show for my favorite artist/band because I was in the right place at the right time, and the guy at the board needed to use the bathroom. I've partied with some of the bands I've gone to see, and can't forget what it was like to "party with rock stars". Hell, I don't WANT to forget what that was like. It's a privilege offered to very few, and I'm one of the lucky ones. So, remember, if you "make it", or even if you don't.... as long as you're giving someone a memory, that memory can last a lifetime. So do it.

Hi! It is refreshing to see the younger generations finding some of the older bands, back when a band got on stage and the music and the musicians were the show and not some one lip-syncing a song with canned music and 100 dancers and massive lite shows to cover for their lack of talent. Lynyrd Skynyrd was a no frills band, working class guys, known to get into bar fights several times, and have massive aftershow parties. They just got on stage, and played their heart out, their live shows were something special. I was not at that show but it is said they blew The Rolling Stones off the stage at a festival in California in the 70s. Their crash in 77 left a hole in the American music scene that was never really filled. Their songs touched people across all walks of life. and music tastes. I think that is why Oliver Anthony has exploded on the scene like he did., Although they sing different styles of music, they have the same kind of authentic feel. he has even covered a few of Skynyrd's songs. I subbed to your channel, after looking at one of your other vids.

The bird sounds are tapping the slide right above the pickups. Makes bird sounds, ya know........Freebird. Yes, this was pre-cell phone days. Everybody was having fun, half-lit, and it was a good time. Cell phones are well on their way to destroying two generations. So happy you posted this. One of the greatest songs in the pantheon of rock n roll. Playing it pretty. RIP to the whole original band who have now left us.

Your comments on how we miss enjoying the moment because we are trying to capture it on our phone is so true. All the pictures and videos can not capture the thrill of being there so why miss it.

First time watching your channel. Love your passion. Piano player is Billy Powell who was classically trained. First lead guitarist is Gary Rossington. The 2nd lead is Allen Collins and the 3rd is Steve Gaines. I used to go to these stadium shows at the Oakland Colosseum. They were called Day on the Green. Usually 4 bands. I had friends at this show. I was away in the US Navy so wasn’t able to go. Your point about cameras… back in the day cameras and recording devices were not allowed in concerts and would be confiscated if found. Lots of copyright issues with photos and recordings. And yes… these shows were an all day blast Sadly, three months after this concert was the plane crash that killed 3 members of the band; Ronnie Van Zant (Lead Singer) Steve Gaines and his sister Cassie, who was a backup singer for the band. Also killed was the band’s road manager, and the pilot and co-pilot. Many other members were seriously injured.

I love your expression: "and they keep going on". I believe that if Ron didn't signal them to finish, they would still be at it. Nothing like good old rock to brighten your day, right? Awesome song from the time when either you had talent and made it big or no talent and got forgotten.

I Love how much you got into this song in the slow part before they really get going? And the piano is fantastic! THIS IS MY FAVOTIRE SONG EVER!

My first major concert was in 77... It was the Music and the crowds energy, that you experienced. Everyone was focused on the band, thousands of people focusing on the music and being chill... a feeling of elation and euphoria afterwards that lasted for days... My last concert in 1999 at Fed EX center Washington, DC a third of the crowd was inside watching the show on TVs at bars....that was it for me..

The first listen to this song live, you are unaware of all the extra time they played over the studio cut! So this was really EPIC to close the concert with.

I can't help myself. Every time I see someone reacting to this I look at that crowd and think: Wow. Look at all of those beautiful young grandmothers having fun.

Nice to watch expressions and stuff that I grew up with. Made a lot of love with this music in the background. And yeah, he left tomorrow in a plane crash. They’re playing in heaven.

Billy Powell on piano was a roadie for the band. He wrote that piano introduction to the song and they immediately inducted him into the band.

I've been in crowds like that. You would have LOVED it back in the day. Concerts were MUCH different and a lot more frequent. Great shows all the time.

"Carefree" is how I remember the 1970s. Not that we didn't have problems. Everybody does. But we didn't dwell and stress over them as everyone seems to today. We accepted our troubles as a natural part of life. Not as some unjust wrong that someone else should be required to solve for us. Add in the music of the day that, to those of us who lived it, will never be matched, and it was truly a great time to be young and alive. This concert, which took place on my 19th birthday, was epic. And just a few months later, my college classmates and I awoke to the news of the plane crash that changed everything for this band, and millions of their fans. Great, and sad, memories. And I totally agree with you about phones at concerts. It is so distracting to have someone directly between you and the stage constantly holding their phone up to video everything. Put it down and enjoy the concert! In fact, put the phone down completely and enjoy being alive!

I was a teenager back in those days and when we were crusing and that song came on the radio we were all waiting for the i can't change for Ronnie to say so won't you fly high freebird yeah so the jam would come in

You are spot on about camera and social media. As a child of the 70’s we focused on being in the moment not taking pictures to relive it or today about posting it.

I was there that day it was called Day on the Green you know it was great when the memory is still fresh in your mind after all these years. It is great to see younger people appreciating music I was brought up on Sadly a few months after this concert the Free Bird went down So sad but lives forever in my memories

I love watching new people's reaction to this especially this version in Oakland California because it shows who they really are and I know what's about to happen here in a few. Not really came outta my city of Jacksonville Florida, the concept of a fast food restaurant that is known as Burger King and a Coffee company by the name of Maxwell House Coffee and one of the best bands that every song makes sense to Me Lynyrd Skynyrd. DUUUUVAL
