Really interesting chat about the deer situation. To hear that venison is imported and farmed blew my mind. I've recently become fascinated with the temperate rainforests in the UK and their decimation over the centuries is an absolute crime and environmental disaster. Really love your videos. Only just stumbled across them when googling mushroom hunting in Scotland!

Beautiful spot there mate. Camped in Rothiemurchus last year and loved it. As for the deer situation, totally agree. Its mental to think that venison is imported. As you say not enough people eat it. We love venison and always haveca stock in the freezer.

Hey Sam, Been watching your videos this week and I have been really enjoying them. Just finished this one and wanted to say that your "forest thoughts" have been a bit of an eye opener for me.. I grew up in Glasgow and it was only a few years back that a friend invited me out for my first hill walk when I was going through a hard part in my life and it honestly made such a difference just being out in nature and how much better I felt in myself, skip 4 years later and it has became such a big part of my life that am currently looking to move to an area around Cairngorm so I can spend more time being in the places I love so much. I think I maybe allowed myself to stay blind to some of the issues you have mentioned in your videos as I didn't want to lose that kind of magic feeling I get when spending time in these places but am glad I came across your videos and even though it might make me see these places a little differently going forward that can only be a good thing and be better for everyone to be more aware of what is going on.. It would be quite good if you also gave advice on what kind of things anyone watching your videos can do to help improve things, as even though am learning more about the issues and the reason why its happening am not sure what things I could do to help with it all.

Hi Kimberley, First of all thanks for watching some of my videos really appreciate that 😁 Yes it's a hard message to push. Many of us have forgotten what it should be like or are so disconnected from it that when we do visit it looks great compared to where most people spend their daily lives. It's very hard to convince people who live in the city that the large green spaces in the Highlands are in fact not that great at all! A few people have asked what they can do and the best thing I can think to suggest is spreading the word. Getting informed and having the discussions with people and keep the awareness spreading. If you are looking to move to the Cairngorms then a good one to Google is the Cairngorm Connects Project. Also Scotland: The Big Picture. Have a nice weekend 😊

@@HighlandWoodsman I think you are quite right when saying people from the city just see these open landscapes and think wow so beautiful as that is how I have seen things, when you spend time in these places its such a big contrast to the city and not knowing the history of what it should look like as you dont see anyone else talking about these issues like you have. Enjoy the videos and the info very much. In reference to the high deer population are you guys seeing CWD? I’ve read that it’s shown up in reindeer and moose in Norway, Finland and Sweden. It’s continuing to spread here in the U.S.

Sam - Just found your channel. Really interesting description of the forest ecosystem. Totally agree with the deer situation and your comparison with Yelllowstone is something that the UK and Ireland could look more closely at. It will be a hell of an education to bring farmers (especially sheep farmers) on board with such ideas, but there has to be a way around it. In the past I spoke to a forward thinking estate owner about wild deer as a viable commercial meat. His response was that culling via stalking is not cost effective and there are health and safety issues with meat hygiene if the deer is gralloched on the hill. If the deer are rounded up and culled, the deer become stressed and this spoils the taste of the meat. He was all for it if it could be commercially viable, but could not find a way to manage it. If you could do a video on native Scottish woods & forests (species etc.) that would be amazing. What should our forests and woodlands look like. That said, you may have done one already and I have as yet to find it. Great content - keep it coming and I will keep watching and supporting.

As far as I know the deer should be gralloched on the hill so as to spoil the meat and it also makes the carcasses considerably lighter but I agree it's not the easiest / most cost effective way to produce meat. Great video and conversation on the deer population effect in your country. I think maybe reintroducing the venison as export to other countries especially ones who are accustomed to it plus other countries with food shortages if possible. It's definitely a meat choice that takes the mundane out of the traditional meat selections. Also if Bird flu does become a impactful problem for poultry consumption, venison may become a viable and profitable solution. Thanks for caring and sharing 😊

Hey I totally agree and understand what you're saying, but I felt like I should tell you that those yellow stone wolves you speak of were reintroduced from Canada, probably Algonquin park, because the Americans simply killed them off back in the day. I spent many camping trips in northern Ontario, and there's nothing that sounds more wild than wolf's howling. All the best

Yes that's why they had to be reintroduced because they had been wiped out. I believe the first group came from the Jasper area.
