Hi Paul Just remove the circular plate before you use it. That is only needed if you are burning twigs. The flames then don't spread out all over and I can boil enough water for a meal and coffee in three minutes. And yes, I was doing it wrong for three months before I found out too...

What a spot. Not that my opinion is worth spit (to anyone else), but when I saw the spot (and the view) my immediate thought was that I'd want a shelter that made the most of the view: something to sit in, and upright in, with a door that opened to to the scenery, and a vestibule so I could cook and eat whilst soaking up the scenery. Nice video as always! On bivy bags: I've got three, including a GoreTex and slightly wide one where I can get some stuff inside. The other two needs a tarp to work well. Actually the GoreTex one works best with a tarp too. They all end up weighing as much as the lightest tents (particularly if you use hiking poles anyway) and are extremely less comfortable in use. Agree the bivy bags are more stealthy, fits in slightly smaller spaces and would hold up better in a storm than the lightest tents. Still, it's very few use cases where I'd bring a bivy bag in stead of a tent.

Thanks Mr. Messner, for a candid, and forthright evaluation of ultra-lite camping gear. Somewhere between: " Travel light, no sleep at night " and bringing the Kitchen sink, there is a sweet spot which facilitates travel, and still permits a reasonable nights rest. I reckon it varies with each, individual rambler .. Cheers.

A good Windshield saves a lot of fuel. You can build a big an leightweight one with aluminium foil and foldback clips as a fixation to the ground.

one of my latest stove set ups is bushbox ultralight with a superlight aluminium tin inside, that takes gel fuel or adding some wicking material - alcohol, also can be used as a wood stove if no fuel available, or as a hexi stove. But crucial part of this set up is a windshield that I made from a very light titanium sheet and that fits in a pot. I use 1l titanium pot, and windshield goes snugly around it acting also as a support for extra stability.

I do a lot of coastal camping. I use the orx bobcat as not only does it cope with coastal winds ,but can sit up in it and enjoy the beautiful scenery in all weathers, under cover ..Me personally i wouldnt use these ultralight lanshan type tents on the open coast. They too thin and make lots of noise in the coast blustery winds,and may even blow down.. I learned that lesson a long time ago..

Bivvy bags, no lighter than a modern solo tent, less comfortable - but I so badly want to have a go with one!

Smart water bottles for the win! A very sturdy and lightweight bottle, plus they fit on the Sawyer Squeeze filters. We have been converts to lightweight backpacking for a while. It's good to get your weight down for hiking as it makes it more enjoyable, but remember to take what makes you comfortable.

I love a bivvy myself. There's something nice about chucking your stuff down at the last minute and going to bed. I use a similar alcohol burner from Speedster Stoves. They do a custom windshield for your mug and it's really efficient as well as light. Decent price too.

Great location and really nice sunrise.i kinda get the lightweight set ups but I only see it been useful if you're doing some big milage over multi days.for me it's a tent every time and a few other comforts and I just accept the extra weight

A lot of American ultralighters use the 1L Smartwater bottles but we can't get those here. I use the 1L Aqua Carpatica bottles from Tesco, they've got a tall and slim profile so you can fit two either side of most rucksacks if you need to. The downside is the thread isn't compatible with the Sawyer Squeeze (I don't use that anyway), but on the plus side the opening is large enough to pee in 😂

bivy camping is pretty damn fun and the kit is cheap, but for 2 people it doesn't make a huge amount of sense. 2 bivy bags you're looking at 800g-1kg, plus a tarp for lets say 500g in case it rains. OR you can get a Slingfin portal- 1100g, masses of space, fantastic weather protection and lighter. I know where I'd rather be sleeping after a long day (and indeed I have done).

I’m in the minority as I like dx stove. Never use the power plate as it makes it burn super fierce, even in sub zero temps it’s too much! Then you have the choice of speed or efficiency, for speed use both wind shields and for efficiency just the upper - like with the other burner on the vid. I cut a foil windbreak that I keep in the cup also, however it’s no Trangia in the wind! Great vid, makes me want to dig out the bivvy!

Paul, you didn't say, but might that be the OR Stargazer Bivy ? If so, I used it last Spring in SE Utah (USA) and I'm completely sold on the value of this piece of equipment. Used it with an inflatable mattress like yours as well as a Z-fold like yours - both as a full body mattress. A 20F synthetic sleeping bag -- what a great sleep that was. And as you said, it weighs almost nothing.

Paul, there is a better way to configure your Japanese flame thrower by placing the burner in the top section of the stove bringing the flame much closer to the pot. Ditch the flame spreader. I get 10 minutes burn from 30ml of fuel boiling 300ml water in 7 minutes or less. Great video. Cheers!

Nice location that. I haven't visited any coastline for a long while but I hope to do something like a North Devon trail this year. I've got into bivy camping myself but use the much heavier XL Dutch Army bivy. I mainly use it for the stealth element though.

When I was speccing up my gear to (eventually!) do the WHW I looked at bivvys, but there was no real advantage IMO. The cost and weight of a decent bivvy and a tarp vs the Naturehike Cloudup-1 that I ended up with didn't stack up, I'd rather have the extra space inside for my gear given Scottish weather. Heading off on the Clyde Walkway for an overnighter this weekend.

I recently gave up the sack for inflating my sleeping pad after a trip into the Grand Canyon where the wind was howling. A buddy was using a small pump that allowed him hands free inflation while the pad was secure inside the tent. It also allows you to do other things while the pad inflates. The pump is just over 1oz heavier than the sack and worth it’s added weight IMO!

Have you looked at the toaks titanium syphon alchohol burner. 15 g of wonder. It's taken the place of my trangia burner. No wasted fuel either as after use and once cold I just tip the remaining fuel back into the fuel bottle.

Great video Paul and good to see pitches away from hills etc , got a couple of questions for you . Firstly what Bergen are you using in this video ? Secondly I’m very very keen to get a quilt as I hate the restriction of a bag and been using for 30+ yrs , I live in Scotland and spend a lot of time in the Cairngorms plus I’m a bit of a cold sleeper ….. am I better to go for a colder rated bag and what company’s would you recommend ? Paul, You know I'm a great fan of yours but I'm not sure what to think about this specific video. To me, you seemed sort of off your game a bit. Maybe it was the bivi, or the, coastal camping, or just out of sorts somehow...it happens sometimes. I was surprised that you didn't like your Evernew stove. You used to enjoy using the burner as part of your "jacket pocket" brew-up kit. Your years of using alcohol burners teach you long ago to always bring a Windscreen along with it, especially at the coast where it's always windy. Anyway, I 💘 your videos and having an off day is something we all have or maybe lite camping is not your thing, it's not mine. Well there you have it, I always praise you and sincerely tell you what I think. So this time is no different. Hugs and give our best to Jo and Archie 🤗😘.

But you may have a point about a lightweight tent instead which would be light, rommier and still pretty compact to boot. But this was a very interesting vid, so thanks again. Keep up the good work.

Great video,and location Paul..😎..Bivy bag def not for me . Some are as heavy as tents. And definitely wont buy that sleeping bag either. It would be a real hinderance in an emergency situation, for ones personal saftey ,and dangerous if the tent catches fire, or some bad guy coming near,so to damage,steal or even thinking of entering the tent.. 😮
