My tent LEAKED - Camping in heavy rainLink to Stephen’s video. Much better than my effort 😂
• Wild Camping in The La...
In this video I head out wild camping up on Haystacks in the Lake District with filmmaker and fellow KZbinr, Stephen Reid. The trip had been planned a while and the forecast was a little windy, but rain was not supposed to be a worry as the forecast was for around 1mm around 10pm. As usual, things didn't go to plan and the rain came down in bucket loads. To top things off....my new tent failed at the seams and lets say...things got a bit wet. I hope you enjoy.

Ugh, what a nightmare! This, among other things, is why I just won't do flys that don't reach the ground, anymore; not just to block all the rain & splashback, but also because keeping the wind out = keeping the flapping down + also keeps me warmer. I could never be as rugged as you, Paul. Good on ya.

Have used mids from MLD for over 10 years including the duomid and always seam sealed them myself. Id put this shelter as one of the best on the market. Once you get the picth dialled and add a polycro or tyvek groundsheet you'll be laughing. I use a bivi and groundsheet under an MLD mid. With this config the duomid is overkill for 1p but perfect if you have a dog or partner with you. It's a 2p shelter so will catch the wind more than a 1p shelter like the hilleburge.

Not wanting to sound smug but this is why I only ever camp with a goretex bivvy bag, and a poncho or tarp. I have had too many bad experiences with leaky tents, or tents which weren't leaky but pitched inner first, so pitching in the rain meant you had a wet inner. With a poncho/tarp it doesn't matter if water somehow gets in, I'm guaranteed to be dry and warm in my bivvy bag.
@daveys
@daveys 2 жыл бұрын
I agree about the bivvy bag. Makes any sleeping bag a much nicer place and saves you when the tent fails you. I typically carry a bothy bag and a tarp/poncho too. Being wet and cold on the hill changes camping into a survival situation, and as a friend once said “if you’re in a survival situation, you’re doing it wrong”.

Paul, Ron needs to hear about this. They’ve gone for neat seam sealing instead of bombproof. Britain needs bombproof. Any leakage through the seams gets hurled about the tent when a gust strikes so I consider this a serious shortcoming. You might want to mention 146K subscribers but MLD usually give helpful replies and Ron has always replied himself to my few emails. It’s a good job fixing the problem isn’t difficult but, if you’ve paid for a service, it should be correctly. My own Duomid is DCF and I love it.
@motorboy23
@motorboy23 2 жыл бұрын
My Duomid is DCF, I wouldn't trust the nylon ones in the UK, too much wind on exposed hills, the DCF gets a much tighter pitch and doesn't sag when it gets wet.

This type of tent is great in conditions that barely require a tent at all. The Lake district is a great place to test how truly waterproof your kit setup. Great frying pan, recently bought one, loving the coating and overall design. Look forward to seeing what your next tent is, though I haven't found a truly remarkable tent that weighs under 3kg yet.
@RebelRDX
@RebelRDX 2 жыл бұрын
Nemo Kunai 2p 😁 The reason I'd suggest my Nemo as remarkable is down to it being a tent that can be used in the mountains, it'll take heavy weather, it has 4 (extra) guy lines that attach directly to the inner pole structure which when the wind starts to hit 40mph + becomes really useful. It has enough pole cross over to take snow loading and crosswinds, and lastly the inner mesh panels can be zipped and covered over in seconds so that no spin drift or fine snow can enter the tent. The same panels can be completely opened up for summer air flow. It's also a 2kg tent . Beat that!! ( @greenpanda it's not a cheap tent but it's also not up there with Hilleberg pricing, if you can afford to try one out I couldn't recommend it enough. It's a bit short on pegs and cord out of the bag, but that seems to be the way of most 'premium' tents over the last two decades and I wouldn't lose sleep over it.)

@@RebelRDX I will check it out, thanks. When I said remarkable, I suppose I meant without any immediate obvious flaws. @@RebelRDX It is very similar to a lightweight Jannu. Maybe more versatile, less wind stable, but with a very angular vestibule which leaves usable space for cooking/storage limited. I guess that comes down to personal preference though, what works for some doesn't work for others.

All the hillberg and solou comments yet on the hilleberg Facebook page lots of people are complaining about leaks too. These things happen and they can be resolved. For me, this is not a wild camping video, it’s a click bait moan with very little content and you would have had as much water in your new rab tent in the same conditions if you had wanted to eat or needed to check the lines. my mate has the MLD duo and he's used shock cord to connect the inner to the outer so makes the pitch a lot faster and easier so might be food for thought. gutted about those seams. I have ordered a liteway tent thats a similar design

No it is the MLD Duomid. And the Lanshan One is (was) tape sealed. But the Lanshan Pro is not.

Not a lover of the tents that don’t go all the way down to the ground. The southern cross would be my choice or similar. It just seems to open . I enjoyed the vlog more than you enjoyed the tent I think 😀
@StephenJReid

Southern cross is great, not a huge amount of space but the small footprint can be ad advantage with limited space and it’s literally 3mins to pitch.

You’ll be wetter inside the southern cross than outside in the rain with the amount of condensation you get.

@@philh6477 honestly haven’t experienced this with the Southern Cross. Maybe the wind prevented it

Trekking pole tents are height adjustable, shorten the pegging points right down and adjust the pole length and you can nail it to the hill side like a limpit. But on those warm summer evenings with a nice breeze you can lift it right up and get a cool draft all night long 😁
@philh6477
@philh6477 2 жыл бұрын
@@StephenJReid it's a great tent in many ways but I think the issue is its size inside, it's just too small, my sleeping bag touches everything and the ends basically block the vents.No matter what I do I always end up with condensation everywhere. I really want to love this tent as it has some really good points but I can't.😪

Not sure blaming seam-seal will solve an identical future situation? If one doesn't properly identify the problem, there's little chance of solving it. And it is an important problem. Could easily turn into life or death problem, had the air-pad also failed? Have had the problem myself (several times) and am interested in lightweight solution, if anyone has one? Running water under the tent. Can happen most anywhere and anytime. Obviously was boggy, but even well-drained spots can turn watery if it rains enough? "Bathtubs" don't help. Air-pads leave quilts to soak-up puddles. A recurring nightmare?

Send it back and get a Dan Durston xmid at the next drop. I failed to get one last time and spent the money on a trip home😊 On a side note. How do you find that soto lighter? I have been considering one and a filler adapter so I can refill it from the gas canister.

I can’t believe you haven’t named and shamed the tent! On another note chest packs are amazing for keeping your gear well organised and at hand. Don’t listen to anyone that say they look stupid. If you have ever carried any military kit you will be very familiar with the concept. Very useful pieces of gear.
@StephenJReid

Haha! Vindication on the chest harness! Most useful bit of kit ever but I rarely see anyone else using them. It was a friend who is ex-military put me onto their existence. I was raging on Paul’s behalf about that tent, basic feature to be waterproof.

@@dustinrobinson58 It's from Mountain Laurel Designs. A Lanshan 2 (not pro) would have probably don't better, it only needs two patches sealed, the rest is seam sealed from the factory.
