Solo Dungeons and Dragons from the 1980’s - Adventure Module Review.

For some reason I’m on Twitter: @plusonepencil
Play D&D on your own as a solo game! On this video I review adventure modules from the eighties that were made to be played by only one person rather than as a group with a Dungeon Master.
All but one of these modules was made for the DND Basic ruleset but can be easily modified to work for Fifth Edition. Most of them also have a group variant so they can be reused by your DM and a regular party.
M1 (MSOLO1)- Blizzard Pass
M2 (MSOLO2) - Maze of the Riddling Minotaur
BSOLO - Ghost of Lion Mountain
XSOLO = Lathan’s Gold
XS2 - Thunderdelve Mountain
CM5 - Mystery of the Snow Pearl
MV1 - Midnight on Dagger Alley
You can find some of them second-hand or on the DM’S Guild.
If you have an original copy of M1 or M2, find a HTML version of all the revealed text here:

Thanks for watching my +1 review of Solo D&D modules. Have you played any of these modules? How do you feel about solo roleplaying games?

I found the module with the blank boxes at a yard sale when I was 12, I had played D&D for 2 years and had no idea what was I was looking at. I think it was 50 cents, I put it back. ONLY today do I know what it was ... wow wish I’d bought it.

They should create solo modules for 5e! These seem really cool, and I’d love to play solo

I think it was a good idea for tsr to have solo adventures, it gives a player a chance to get their feet wet, and establish a character before joining a group (or if they can't find one)

**Immediately adds a 5'3" Elf named Christov Yetta to his current D&D Campaign. Key Trait: Pillock.** The dude sounds like a bad ass.

Also a 3rd Party Module by the company Role Aids, "Final Challenge." It used dice and a date system (Time limited and let you continue with a second pre-rolled character if you die to determine what you encountered as you travelled and how and if you found the "boss" Wizard. I had a lot of fun with that.

I played the MV1 - Midnight on Dagger Alley one and had a ball with it. I played it back when it was fairly new on a night I was babysitting my cousins, so it was just perfect to occupy me for a few hours while they basically just slept. :-) I enjoyed this one enough that I seriously wished they made more like it. I still own it, and I still have the little Magic Viewer... and yes, it has a cardboard frame. In fact, I own all of the solo modules you featured here, along with the other Magic Viewer and two magic ink pens. For whatever reason, I never played the magic pen adventures... I wonder if my pens still somehow have any ink left in them. lol My magic ink modules also had a tiny Velcro patch on the cover, where the pen would attach.

They're a bit obscure. I don't think many people expect to find solo content for a cooperative game. Thanks for watching!

Found this video looking for 5th ed Solo modules. As you stated, they haven’t made any yet?! Not sure why, they should. And of these modules here, I have 3 of them. Blizzard Pass, Snow Pearls and Ghost Castle. Also, the basic rulebook had a short solo game in it as an introduction to “how to play” these are all 2nd edition modules (I believe). I have that whole line of rulebooks (Red, Blue, teal, black, gold). Fun times!

Yeah! There's a kind of puzzle aspect to a lot of the older solo modules that you don't really get in regular Dnd. I think the new version of the 5e starter set has added a one on one introduction but that's about it for WOTC.

The "red mist" made the last two modules... It was better than a video game. With that said I spent many hours + viewer + Might Night Alley. Such a classic. :)

😁 Thanks for watching. I'd only read a couple of fighting fantasy books when I came across these a couple of years ago. They're a pretty obscure bit of dnd history so I thought it was worth showcasing.

Just started getting into solo play. I've just taken Dragon of Icespire Peak and played through it as player and DM. It's hard to avoid the spoilers, but learning 5e was tough enough. I don't want to learn a new system. I wish there were more solo videos. I've gone through all the ones I can find in KZbin search. Thanks for the info!!

Nice reviews. I've at least read through most of these. Maze of the Riddling Minotaur was the first mod I ever bought. It's a pity TSR never really got the hang of solo modules, unlike they did with endless quests. The solo mods are all bare bones descriptions, really missing the immersive experience from either group play or pick a path style books. Its no wonder they never really caught on. A missed opportunity.
