I have lived alone for going on 6 years. I LOVE it. I do not get lonely, I did have a dog until last year. He passed away. That took awile to get used to, I still have my moments with that. I am going to be 63 this month, I retired from factory work when I was 60. I live comfortably. I also live in a 1-room cabin by choice. I really am enjoying being alone. I am divorced not widowed. So I do want to be alone.

I have been solo for almost 25 years since my husband died. I didn’t retire until December 31, 2023. Right before the pandemic shut everything down, I moved to the EL Paso area from Yuma, AZ. I love my independence. But when I moved , I had to create a whole new social network which was getting involved in church activities. My dog keeps me walking every day. I am 77 and realizing that I only have a few good years to travel so have signed up with Road Scholar for trips to Alaska , Costa Rica. Also looking at a cruise with them in January 2025 to Greece. I have been vegetarian for almost 50 years. See dentist every 6 months. See my primary physician and eye doctor every year. Maintaining my weight seems to be getting harder every year. I have thrived being solo. You have given lots of good info. I actually am a techie myself😊

My advise for anyone thats single is re-imagine of what a relationship is. I have been with my partner for 11years, we dont live together and will never marry but our families see us as a couple and we envisage being together until one of us passes away. We travel together but also each have our own friends and hobbies. We both enjoy our independence and but share the expenses of dating. When we travel we create a 'kitty' and put in equal money into it for our expenses, when we are together the outing comes out of the kitty, if we do things independently we pay for it out of our own pocket. At the end of the trip we divide any money thats left over. I call our relationship 'independent togetherness'. I get the best of him and he gets the best of me without any resentment for either of us.

Same as you.two very short term marriages, lived alone for 25 Years and actually love it, so true very hard to find a suitable friend of the opposite sex in your 70s. Concentrating on maintaining good health is so important though to stay happy. Living alone you learn not to be codependent.

I've been single after being married twice and two co-habitations. It's taken me the past 7 years to realize that needed to be very happy with myself so that I could be a better partner. Now I'm finding nearing the age of 65 I'm at peace doing things by myself but I would be lying if I didn't tell you at certain times of the year when it's Christmas, New Year's Thanksgiving etc that one does not feel profoundly lonely when you're trying to do it by yourself. By the way I'm very active in my work and I even volunteer in several areas so finding groups to hang out with is not a problem. It's not having that significant other that it creates a hollowness that most of us, if we were honest, would agree is an issue.

Malaysia's My Second Home Program (MM2H) changed in the last year and it's not as attractive for retirees anymore. The long-term visa is expensive and takes many months to get approved. Malaysia is still a great place to visit or live part-time...lots to see and do, easy to get around on your own, English-speaking, high quality healthcare, affordable housing and modern conveniences. Also, there is a strong expat community in Penang.

Your wonderful ideas are great for the “younger” new retiree. Things are much different (which you have yet to discover) after one passes 70. Running groups? Boot camps? Not really. Classes and maintenance exercise at a gym, yes. Intense physical activity, not usually. Ten busy hours every day? Perhaps between 60 and 70, but after 75 not so much. These are not excuses. This is a reality you will face eventually. I am 83 now and still live independently in a 55+ community. However, every year or two there is another new limitation to adjust to. I am every bit and more as healthy as my doctor expects. In face, I far exceed my doctor’s expectations. But there is no way I can still accomplish at the level someone your age does.

I am currently 79 and lost my husband of almost 36 years 19 years ago. However I still had and was living with my parents, by my husband’s choice. I had to help Mom take care of my Dad who had Alzheimer’s. My church had a singles group which I joined in with activities and a couple of us would call and get together. I have changed my living situation and also towns, so my church has changed, but there too are some single that we have come together to do some things and trying to help in weaker areas of our lives. I also had youngsters who wanted a Grandparent close by so they adopted me. I love those 3 boys along with the others who just kind of adopted me, and I never had children. I do have nieces and great nieces and nephews. My advice is stay involved as much as you can along with finding the humor in life, never mind all the bad news these days. I have no telling how many years ahead of me so I am determined to enjoy them as much as I can, not putting myself into situations where I can knowingly catch something that can make me ill. Enjoy your day one at a time.

I’m solo because I lost my husband almost 3 years ago. I’ve been doing many of the things you suggested, and overall consider myself happy. The biggest challenge is finding a social network/friends. I’m only 65 so most everyone I know is still coupled up and I live in a rather rural area so there aren’t as many opportunities for any sort of social interaction. I love my location, but am considering a move at some point because of the isolation. I won’t lie, it’s lonely even though I stay active and as involved as I’ve figured out to be.

This topic goes hand in hand with the mistaken attitude (at any age) that a partner/spouse 'completes' you. At any age we are all whole and valid by ourselves.. Aside from the possible feelings of loss and mourning the loss of a loved one, however you may find yourself a solo act, a reasonable response to living alone is "woohoo! I'm free!!"

Luckily, I have a good social network, my kids all live with in 30 minutes, I'm in good health and I am also financially independent.. I don''t take any of this for granted, I really feel blessed. In saying that, I do have lonely moments, but I see too often, friends having to deal with emotional costs and financial costs when things don't work out.. Found myself living alone after 35 years of marriage - midlife crisis (not mine) ended our marriage. Then covid hit and my adult son came to live with me when they closed the college dorms and so now I'm not alone but don't feel I have the freedom to explore my newfound-single status. And it's hard to find time with friends, old and new, who are all married and don't want to take time away from their SO in the evenings or weekends. I get it, but it adds to my loneliness and feeling valued when I'm "second best" in their lives now. I did live alone for a year while kids were away at college, and just when I was getting used to finding a new routine (hiking, reading, painting...) covid hit and changed everything. Feeling defeated.

solo living... that's me... i live in a hollar out past the last briar patch in nowhere usa... i really like it but realize my lifestyle is not for everyone... there are pros and cons to it... one thing is kinda important is financial planning, the pro side is that you can adjust your own risk with your investments without a partner's concerns and the con side is that you can adjust your financial risk without another's input... study your variables carefully... anyway, plan your retirement BEFORE you retire and prepare yourself for a culture shock (partnered or solo) ... waking up one day without a career or job is kinda different... plan it and follow your plan.... and no matter what your circumstances are make the best of every day... remember that happiness comes from inside of you (i think Jesus said that best so maybe read a famous book that's about Him)...

Now some people will also get a pet for some companionship. A dog for instance will love you unconditionally. I have 3, all rescues. They become a part of your family, like I am sure Ruby has. I retired at 47 in 2014 and moved to Baja Mexico, alone. The move tripled my retirement savings, figuratively speaking, because the cost of living is about a third of the cost in San Diego, CA, where I had moved from. I bought a house outright in a resort community that hugs the Pacific coast with 27 hole golf course and 24 hour security. (A similar home would set me back USD 3M in San Diego) My fixed expenses are just under USD 300 a month, relieving me of any financial concerns. It is an enclave of American expats with many community activities throughout the year to bring the people together. I live alone and enjoy my company. I stay pretty busy by running a small business in town. I enjoy my aloneness and totally embrace the benefits/costs that come with it!!! I am not seeking out friends/companion quite yet, although I may in the future. I am planning on traveling extensively alone for several months out of the year while I have my youth and health. As a CPA, I tend to quantify everything, including relationships, and I have not found someone who can provide me with benefits that exceed the costs.😢

I'm somewhat amused by the assumption that living alone means to have more time. I've been alone all my life and find I could fill 4 concurrent lives with all the things I want to do. Time to paint because you're alone? I don't think so! I do find it quite exhausting having to make ALL decisions myself and on my own - from buying a home (and learning all the legalities around that), to insurance, investment decisions, maintaining a car, keeping fit (the neighbourhood where I live is not safe for a woman to walk alone, so it takes planning and going out somewhere safe), shopping and cooking, socialising, etc etc And any travel, apart from being doubly expensive because of crazy single supplements, means an awful lot of planning without someone to share those decisions and chores with. All that said, I generally enjoy the freedom of being alone and not having to coordinate with someone else and accommodate their preferences all the time.

Madison, Wi is awesome- a lot of retired folks who don't mind snow move up to Door County on the Peninsula. It has a satellite university, and there is so much to do and see it would take half a lifetime to get it all done. Very low crime rate, nice housing- lots of perks. The hospital has a cancer center and they keep everyhing up to date.

Great video, thanks! I'm in my early 60s, retired, live alone, and enjoy it. Something to consider for those going it alone are pets. I have a wonderful dog who keeps me physically active by walking 3-4 miles a day in addition to my other workouts. As I get older, I need to work on my support network. Rochester, MN is a location I'm considering as the cost of rent and housing is a little less expensive than Madison and Ann Arbor. Since Mayo is there, Rochester has doctors and researchers from all over the world, so it's very diverse for a smaller city.

I love my independence which is so strong. I'm not certain I could live with anyone even if the opportunity came along. You definitely get set in your ways living alone forever. Thinking about the divorce rate, 50%, is just plain and simply not worth the marriage route. I've known tooooo many friends, work colleagues and people in general that had extremely expensive (waste of money) weddings and are divorced. Please note that this is just my opinion and not to influence anyone.

Money goes twice as far if not more :-) No more arguments ? No more waiting for someone to call back when you were waiting. Not hanging with married couples - someone trying to set you up all the time. No more hanging around married friends that didn`t prepare for retirement and seem to be short on the $. I found traveling in a mini van and camping - always meeting people on the road or state parks. Did a 5000 mile trip end of last year and really enjoyed it -learned how to travel and make the best of living in a small space but economical way of boon docking. People on the road are way more relaxed and are easy to approach. You learn how to adapt ! Electric bike and kayaking are great to do also. Make a reason to move on.

My complaint is that retirement coaches assume reasonable health. I find myself having to Self Advocate in the Healthcare system. Healthcare can be a brick wall. Lots of retirees need coaching/help addressing their medical problems. Bad health is a retirement killer.

I was widowed 2yrs ago and I’m am living my life now. I was very dedicated to my husbands medical and social life. Now I am so social. I first joined a FB walking group. From there an other Walker told me about another FB social club, I joined that. I joined a +60 coffee group. I have so many directions to go and I put exercise in every morning schedule. A purpose and being socially involved and the freedom to do what I want when I want. But…my evenings are long and can be an empty feeling. Volunteering is a source of purpose.

You can do all the interviews you want but until you've experienced it there's no way you know what it's like. Hi @darlenestokes2507. Yes you are right we have not experienced being retired alone or living alone. I did live alone for a few years after I was divorced but I don’t have the experience that you refer to. Nor does Jody. We make these specific videos on solo retirement because many of our subscribers ask for them because they do live alone. We are sorry that you feel we are poking fun at people who live alone due to circumstances that out them there. We in now way want to give that impression. We will continue to create content to help all retirees and be as sensitive as possible. That you for your comment and feedback.
