How was the camping ? We’re they good spots ?
@OutdoorRob3 жыл бұрын
There's quite a few spots to pitch a tent and a couple actual camping areas up the Dalton. I didn't camp much on this trip even though the plan was to. It was cold and rainy almost every day and I only camped I think 6 times in 17 days. The motels were decent but expensive everywhere I stopped up north.

I've done a lot of rides, trails and highways across the USA, but the Dalton HWY is one on my bucket list I've yet to do. Sitting here right now with both feet broken (7 out of 10 metetarsal bones snapped) and am wheelchair bound for 6 more weeks. Hoping I'll be back on my 125K mile 06 KLR by Summer. My most comfortable bike of 9 I own, and easiest to keep going in the middle of nowhere. The pictures are great!

Great trip man! Can a Harley Davidson Roadglide will be okay riding the Dalton Highway? Planning to go this coming July. Thanks!
@OutdoorRob2 жыл бұрын
If it doesn't rain, you'll have no issues...gets pretty slick when it rains. Also if they are repairing a section which requires a bypass you won't make it. I nearly sunk the KLR to the frame trying to get thru LOL! But I think that is a rarity. Each year more and more gets paved which means less gravel . When the road is dry it's like pavement, so no issues there. Good luck and have fun!

I’ve always been curious how it would feel to drag a unigo motorcycle trailer up in Alaska?
@OutdoorRob4 жыл бұрын
Not sure I'd like to haul a trailer with that thing, there's a lot of people that do but I like the freedom of just the bike, my gear and me. Got screwed outta a big trip this summer that I had planned but I guess so did a lot of people! Alaska is mostly pavement but there's a few areas that are dirt, not sure how those trailers haul on wet gravel roads?

It has always been my ultimate dream to travel to Alaska on my Honda Gold wing. As a truck driver, my time off is very limited. The toughest road is probably cold foot to Prudhoe bay Alaska right?

They are slowly paving the Dalton Hwy, lots of sections of pavement now. The worst part of it would be when it's rains and gets slick or when they grade it and the gravel gets loose and deep. Other than that I had no issues on it. I'm not a big phone conversationalist, sorry. You can email me or message on facebook and I can answer any questions. Thanks John!

I’d like to ride a smaller cc bike that’s not heavy , something a 65 year old can pick up if I’m like the rental guys lol

Ya, think I'm with you now. I had plans to head up the Dempster Highway in 2020 and again this past summer 2021 but they still haven't opened the Northwest Territories due to the Covid BS. Now I'm getting old and out of shape and thinking that a smaller bike would be better...if I ever get the chance to go again! Thanks Gary!

@@OutdoorRob I was just up there this past August! What an incredible trip!! I hope to do it again next summer again.. possible on a motorcycle. I drove up from Florida and I can honestly say the Dalton Highway was definitely the highlight of the entire trip!!

The Dalton is listed as a Hwy so maybe it's not considered off road?

Nice! I will ask the million dollar question! What would you do differently, now then you have f egg one this ride. It’s a bucket list ride for me and I’m hop in g to make the trip in 2022. Is the klr a little small? How did it handle the trip! Thanks bob for sharing. I’m looking at a bike to purchase to do this trip and the trans American. I’m a disabled vet with an half foot on right leg. So I’m looking for a bike that sits Low enough to balance on the middle to back part of the foot. I’m designing a brake pedal and a aluminum bae for boot that I can use to alloy brake or tie both brakes into one lever. It’s a challenge but not letting my disability to stop me. Oh yeah did you tie up food I n a near by tree for the bears? I’m doing the Florida keys to pry shoe bay solo. The trans America I’m doing this summer but will have a safety vehicle going. Keep in touch! God speed my friend!
@OutdoorRob4 жыл бұрын
The KLR sits pretty high but you can put lowering links on it as long as you lower the front forks the same amount. I like the KLR for it's price, fuel economy, reliability and it's easy to work on if you do have a problem. Don't think I'd change much with the bike for another trip. It's not a rocket and takes a bit to pass with a load on it, so you have to be aware of that. I've put the KLX needle kit in the carb now and that gives it a little more throttle response. Good all weather gear is a must for up there, can be hot, cold, rainy, snowy, buggy. I did have a trip to Tuktoyaktuk planned for last summer but with this Covid crap the NWT was closed, so hoping to do the trip this summer...but not holding my breath. Last trip I didn't start with all new tires, sprockets, etc and had to change them out up in Alaska. This time I'll be starting with all new items. I also plan to take a little more time for the trip and not such long days as it was really tiring and physically demanding during that trip. I had food in sealed bags which were kept in the lockable boxes and I keep a tidy campsite to deter bears, I don't hang food...never had any bear issues. Having a safety vehicle follow along would be nice as you can get it to carry some of the heavier stuff and gas if needed. Happy Trails and good luck with your trip Donald!

Does the klr have cruise control?? Or do you use a throttle lock??
@OutdoorRob4 жыл бұрын
It's a sort of throttle lock, kinda like scissors. Can't remember what it's called. Need to rest my hand once in while and it works fine for that.
