Hello Dan, I have had to use those emergency shelters twice in 50 + years of being in the mountains. The two times that I did was in the space of two years and within the last five years and one time was in the pouring rain. I put the cord out and tied it off, I then put under the cord two Y shaped sticks, this put more tension on the cord and kept it tight. I then got two cleft twigs and put these at the ends of the shelter to keep it in place. I then got 4 large rocks and put these in each corner of the tent. I then (with small branches) made a small back wall at my head to stop a through wind. What you can't stop is the buildup of condensation. You should stop saying the word "cheating" because you are not!!.The shelter came with the cardboard and the match came with the striker, so as I told my students you "use it" On the subject of the match, if you run your thumb nail several times down the back of the match, it will split behind the head, this will give you two matches (two chances of lighting a fire). This should be practiced at home first. Anyway, that's my two Penny worth. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀

It's for sure not cheating. If you're going to be out in the woods. And be smart enough to have a survival shelter and bivy. A person should also be smart enough to have ways to start fires. Great video

Thanks Dan, I'm 72 and you have made me realise that simple having these items that you demonstrated and possibly an emergency blanket in my car could be a lifesaver if just by chance I broke down and in a situation of not having a phone signal to call for help, hmmmm maybe a chocky box as well and some fluids for an emergency. Thanks Dan, brilliant video.

Long back story, but I once spent the night in a large concrete pipe on a building site with only my motorbike gear and a black bin bag as a cover and my bike seat as a pillow. No soft leaves or cozy fire. You set up looks like luxury in comparison. 😄

Dan, A couple if things mate in "survival mode" 1. If you had lit the fire before the tent and bivvi were unpacked, then the paracord could have been heated on the ends as it looked like nylon. 2. You had a pillow with dry leaves stuffed tight into you kit bag. 3. Assuming you had no knife or multi-tool you could have made small pegs for the tent using dry sticks with a split end. Anyway good luck mate. Only here to Help.

Your #3, We have watched a Russian youtuber who did exactly that in the snow. We had no clue why he was so picky looking for a thick broken branch. Then we wondered what he was going to do with the 4. When he staked out his thin emergency tarp it made perfect sense.

Hi Dan, I don’t think it’s cheating having a match, each individual survival situation is different, someone could find themselves in an emergency situation and have a box full of matches on them and someone else might not have anything, the whole idea of survival is using what you have available to you at the time and you did just that, good job mate 👍🏻

A Snugpak Antarctic Mat would be helpful in this circumstance. Whilst it's not as comfy as an air-mat, it would reduce heat loss to the ground. It also compresses down quite well.

You could have used your rucksack as a pillow with some leaves in it. Reflective bags only reflect tour body heat if you are producing heat. They will stop the wind chill. If you are very cold and your body is not giving off any radiant heat, a foil blanket will not warm you up!

Last week I got lost for about 1 1/2 hours on the side of a mountain in Granada and thought that I would be spending the night there. I happened to have a hammock with me and my usual emergency foil blanket in my first aid kit but I think the survival tent (used as a lightweight tarp) would have been a good addition, had I had to have spent the night out.

It’s not cheating to use a match, a lighter, a ferrocerium rod, flint and steel or steel wool and battery, etc. i don’t walk outside my door without my wazoo belt on my pants full of gear to start a fire, a lighter, my leatherman supertool 300 with an exotac mini ferro rod in the case and my victorinox ranger 72 in my pocket. No sir, it’s not cheating but I think you are way less prepared than many of would normally be. I have my get home full of gear as well in my car trunk. Good work and keep going man.

Ay up buddy, rough night hey, lol. The match isn't cheating as you make do with what you've got at the time and you had a match so you use it. Thing is with these emergency shelters is that's exactly what they are. They aren't meant for comfort they're meant to be very light weight shelters to keep you alive in an emergency... but once again thank you for a honest review about things you've actuality bought yourself and not been given. 👍
@tangozulu
@tangozulu Жыл бұрын
just an idea, if you had to do this in an emergency it would be far better to tie one end of the tent guide line down to the ground and peg it, this would stop wind flow through the tent and aid with shedding water should it rain, it would trap more of your body heat and be far warmer.

Dan, survival is about finding yourself in an event that wasnt planned, so one must plan for an unplanned event. You would not be cheating if you had the basics ie knife, fire starting equipment, shelter, and dehydrated food water, cook pot, and some form of water filtration system. I carry a bag with the minimum yet essential items I need this is still survival. Well done for even trying it. Last time I did this was while on a military exercise in the early 80s late November on the Yorkshire moors between minus 4-5c I used leaves like you did I used my Cape as a cover and I covered the Cape with leaves, I was warm enough luckily there wasn't an wind and I sletp well, my mates found a concrete bunker and the were freezing all night because concrete just sapped the heat out of them. Anyhow well done, at least you gave it ago.👍👍👍

And now: time for a sack race! You are going to create condensation like nobody's business! You have that DD bag: you could at least have enough minimal kit to fill that. PLUS: a wool blanket and some blanket pins would do you better than that bivvy sack! I also use 'sewing clips' to pin thin tarps to a line.

They found a man banging his head against the wall & asked him why he was doing it, he replied he was banging his head because when he stopped banging it felt so good. A bit like your survival tent, good when it's over, discomfort for not a lot of good reason, but at least you survived the night & cold ground. Had it been dry praps you could have made a mattress out of branches with leaves on top, lot of cold in the ground.

I have spent years homeless in Switzerland, mostly sleeping in train station waiting rooms. However on the occasions I was outside I elected to use everything that I had to insulate me from the ground. Also, inexpensive beer would help... but seriously if you are in a situation where you have to rough sleep then try to find a dry space and get a long coat rather than a puffer jacket so you can wrap your legs up with it. Unfortunately they're hard to find in England from what I've seen, and anyway I wouldn't suggest trying to survive in the streets of this country anyway. Was drawn to the video because of the tent, but after seeing it I am not at all impressed. Thanks anyway.

Nice vid. Personally I don't think water is cheating, nor a means to make fire and a few cereal bars or something because anyone who would buy that product would have a basic outdoor kit with them which should include water, a snack and a first aid kit and a way to light fire and maybe a blade minimally. Those bivvy, I think they are a gimmick and most people would be better off carrying a decent tarp, they tear they condensate, they don't last. Wearing or carrying proper layers and a tarp would be a better option I think.

Nice vid Dan. If you get hungry,you can always kick a few stumps over and eat the bugs in them. The SAS call this ‘Hard Rations’. It’s still protein at the end of the day. I’m sure there something else you can eat like nettles and garlic. Just hold the nettles over the fire to evaporate the Formica acid and roast them a bit. They taste like spinach and contains vit C. You could also prop your ridge line up with a few branches… All the best.👍🏾🍁🇬🇧

Ive slept on stone floors with nothing to insulate, nor jackets, not fire resources... a few times. It wasn't the most pleasant. (Don't ask). Fortunately as with you, there was an alternative choice. :) As you say, the experience on its own is good as it makes you think. 5* All in all, great video. Opens up a lot of questions, especially opening these packets and starting with replacing the rubbish cords and making up a better system. The shelter, if it got windy, maybe there was a possibility to tether the line to the bivvy via a marlin spike knot by creating a little slack, or trying to split a little piece of wood to work as a makeshift peg. That Im not sure how well it'd work, but worth a try. Id let it sag a bit to reduce draft, its mroe than enough airy as is. The fire, as you mentioned, keeping resources dry. Small stuff in your pocket even. And bigger stuff under shelter. if I only had one chance to light a fire, I'd have used everything needed, from the striker as well as the card from the tent the plastic. It was a 'valid' resource. Alternatively, the card and bag, however small, could be added into your clothing as a added layer of insulation. Could be used as a sit mat, the plastic the waterproof and the card as insulating. For how small, every little helps. The emergency bag on its own, rather than lying down (more surface to ground to sap heat), I'd collect leaves as per the tent if on its own, and just sit on hunched. Probably preferable to me.. Its not a proper bivvy bag/sleeping bag where you'd have a mat and sleep system after all. The boots I'd keep on, one more layer of insulation and heat. Besides if something happens and you need to scoot... boots are on already.

Two major issues: The "tent" has two openings. Wind, cold wind, rain, snow and buggers can enter without difficulty. Secondly, the bivy is waterproof which permits the moisture your body gives off during the time spent in it will make you cold and wet versus a heat reflective, breathable water resistant, and windproof bivy such as the SOL Escape Bivy.

I grew up using tube tents like this. Once you get used to using one they are pretty good. We would take small stones and make Indiana buttons and stake the corners outs also would make the ridge line angle like you see on one person tents. We would put our packs in the front entrance to cut down on wind. Plus put the opening up close to the trunk of tree also helps.

With the SOS tent many people make the mistake not to support it with small thin sticks and use them like tent poles. Two triangles one on each side and a top pole to connect them through the top of the tent. Once its tied together it should be more stable then it is. I would only use the rope on the top to form the tent then once the supports are in place discard the rope.

I always keep a lighter in my pocket. In my emergency pack, I have another lighter and a ferrocerium rod, a fist full of dry, crushed pine needles, some pitch pine, and fire tender. A match is not cheating. I call it being prepared.

its more of a challenge with a match... if it were me I would have brought a ferro rod or some cord to make a fire bow... keep up the good work mate...
