I have to hand it to you. I didn't think I'd see you again until spring. Not many people would go out and brave those conditions to do a little camping. I don't think your stove does a very good job of heating up your tent. I would recommend looking at a small propane heater. Very easy to carry and really keeps the place warm, just check it out. Nothing's fun when you're freezing. I love what you're doing so hang in there!

Lack of good wood looked like maybe the biggest issue. When I go solo hot tenting, I always take in enough wood to get me through the first night. Getting to camp and getting it all set up is work enough, so bringing ready wood (why not, with a pulk sled?) eliminates wood collection and processing in the dark. I save that effort for the next day, when the work to set up everything else will already be done. But kudos, you are indeed a trooper, maintaining such a good attitude while faced with problems in those difficult conditions.

Always test gear at home to iron out issues before they become bigger issues. I burn in every stove at home before using it on a trip. That also looks like a three season tent. Not going to get warm in the snow.

What an inspiring video! It reminded me of the times when my friend and I used to go on kayak trips. The funny thing is, the most vivid and cherished memories are often about the challenges we faced and overcame. Like that one time we paddled all day under relentless rain, only to finally change into dry clothes and crawl into the tent-it felt amazing! Or the time we were kayaking in the scorching heat, surrounded by endless reeds on both sides of the river, thinking we’d have to spend the night in the boat. But then we found a small island with shade, firewood, and the perfect spot for our tent-it was like finding a little piece of paradise! I think experiences like this, even when things don’t go perfectly, become invaluable lessons for future trips. I hope this winter camping adventure will turn into a positive memory and a stepping stone for even more incredible journeys ahead. Keep up the great work!

I know when we camp in the snow and cold we use a heavier tent material. Keeps the cold air out and warm air in. My brother actually has one of those huge canvass guide tents that sleeps 4-6…get the wood stove crankin in there and it’s actually t shirt temp. Maybe have a thinner tent for spring, summer and fall and a thicker one for winter? If that lake gets thick enough ice you could ice fish too which is fun…

Hello from a neighbor to your south. I recently did some testing of my sleep system in winter temperatures with no means at all of adding heat to my tent and found that as it stands now my comfort rating is about 20°F with a mesh base layer (I highly recommend you research Brynje mesh base layers), and 250 weight merino wool mid-layers, down jacket, merino wool buff and beanie, and alpaca wool socks. Knowing the limitations of your cold weather system is crucial to successful winter camping when away from warm shelter or easy access to transportation. All that being said, you really did impress me with your abilities and how well you made out in sub zero degree weather. I applaud your getting out there and going for it. Yo Woodsy! Another great video! I have to say that I'm really proud of you! Keep heading out and testing yourself and your gear. One thing that growing up in Colorado taught me was that cold environments are one of the hardest to survive in. You HAVE to have a warm and dry shelter, you HAVE to have fuel/wood to stay warm and cook, you HAVE to have food to keep your metabolism going and keep your body warm. In other environments you can improvise, and make do, but not the cold. You have a great attitude and I hope your channel grows and more people from the community see who you are and what you are doing, and I hope they are inspired by it. Also, don't worry about the wierd winter snow worms! 😅

Good for you for trying it. I prefer a tarp for winter camping due to your breath freezing over everything in the tent. The tarp keeps off the wind and snow. I also use a military cold weather face mask to keep my face warm but also to keep my breath and moisture out of the bag. Tucking in your head works for a while, but the moisture eventually makes you colder.

I hot tent camp a lot! Couple tricks I learned after spending colder nights at camp than I wanted... the quality of wood matters a lot. Wet or punky wood will be smoky and be hard to get cranking in the stove. Build a good bed of coals and then keep feeding the stove. Fill it up and see how it behaves, but my stove gets so hot i can't even keep my windows and doors closed when it's going full steam. When setting up the stove, make sure that it's level, or even a little raised in the rear where the stove pipe is. If the front of the stove is raised, you won't get as good of a draw. I leave the stove damper wide open when I start the stove and usually don't close it down until I've got plenty of coals formed. Keep going! You'll love it when you can get it dialed in! I learned a lot of hard lessons when I started, I find myself so emotionally invested in your trials because... BEEN THERE lol 😆

About confidence building, you're doing great, 100%! You have good equipment for sure. 👍 Winter camping solo is fun but always a bit scary at night with noises, and it's very hard to stay warm. I've did quite a bit a winter tent camping as a kid in the boy scouts. Now I'm more into snowshoeing during winter. Here in Canada it's not as cold currently, more in the 20s. Your woods looks similar to around here, but we have more spruces. Nice video, it really had a "as if we were there" feel to it!

@@Apeaceofthewoods Watching the video made me think back about my childhood winter adventures! In the boy scouts, we used big canvas tents that could sleep 6-8 persons. (maybe even more? it's from memory, it's been a long time...) We dug a big 2-3 feet deep trench in the snow near the front door to fit the wood stove, fire wood, and sitting space for two people. I think the trench was made so the cold air would sink down there, and be heated back by the stove. The wood stoves were big, hand made from old oil drums. The tent floor was compacted snow, hay on top to insulate, and a canvas tarp on top of that. One kid plus an adult watched the stove in shift during the night. The stove was keep red hot! In my experience, it's important to change base layers before going to bed, to make sure to be 100% dry to stay warm. Continue experimenting, learn, and find out what is the camping style that suits YOU the best! I'm stand impressed that you're doing it at all. Not because it's that hard, but because you're doing it willingly! He-he. Solo, so nobody dragged you into it, hey!?! 🙂

The curved front of your sled could of been used to move the snow to create a perimeter berm of snow and then once the tent is up...berm the snow back to the bottom edge of the tent to eliminate the open gap at the bottom of the tent all the way around. Fill the stove full after fire is started and if you need to leave the door cracked open a little to allow more airflow in until fire gets going good...then close the door and adjust damper as need be. You should not have to close damper down unless it gets too hot in tent or you are going to sleep to allow a longer burn time. Keep at it...don't get discouraged....you'll get it and the comfort will come along with more experience's and outings. Good Job...God Bless....Stay Safe

Aww you were out in the cold too? Do you mind me asking what tent/stove combo you use? Thank you!!

Thank you for sharing your trip. Most creators would not take the time to edit and release a video when things go less than perfect. You had the right gear so that you did not have to depend on your stove to keep you alive. Definitely Type B fun when you look back at it later. Good job.

Thank you!!! I still wanted to share the experience because even though I sometimes feel like I’ve watched all of the camping videos on KZbin I still come across things in real life I’ve never seen in a video. The more we can all share the more we can all learn! The pork chop was a little embarrassing though 😂 I’m grateful for the gear I had all working how it was supposed to and slept warm enough. Absolutely type B fun. Appreciate you!

So glad your videos are from my home state of Michigan. I live in Wisconsin, but still love and consider Michigan always my home state and think about moving back someday to St. Ignace to be near the.bridge and Island

I can appreciate the fact that you love camping and doing it solo but I feel it is unwise along with unsafe to solo camp in those temperatures. Especially as under prepared as you were. Michigan winters are no joke and Mother Nature does not respect anyone. Keep creating your adventures and sharing them with us, but not at the risk of your health and safety. Have an amazing and beautiful New Year.

Michigan weather has been crazy so far. Two weeks ago cold and 3 feet of snow in just a few days, and now the over night temps are mid 30's and melting fast. I'm glad to hear that even experiencing below zero temps, you still want more. Because we do. 😊
