Here's a new solution to the overheating issue on the Nokia 5G Home Internet Gateway by T-Mobile. This neat 3D printed part comes with a 80mm fan and USB adapter so its ready to truly be "plug n' play" without any other purchases. This helps cool down the passive only gateway by forcing air up thru the unit and cooling it down. Turning off wifi can also help cool down the gateway. Others have even reported that removing the batter also cools it down.

My friend and I made these fans. We are working as hard as we can to keep these fans in stock and ready to order. Please keep checking periodically for stock. We've got parts coming in from all over, expedited in some cases. Please be patient with us, we're just a 2 person 1 printer operation trying to provide a product people need. I have Tmobile home internet, so I know the struggles of a slow connection.

Nate I saw you video about a month or so ago. I had been using your idea of the fan below the trashcan at that time. With the present firmware update the unit stays on N41 and B66 BUT if I binge watch and stream a lot, the darn thing freezes and I have to do a soft reboot . I decided to try this top fan from Etsy. I gotta tell you those guys selling these units are fantastic! As you said if they're out of stock, Etsy won't show a listing but I used your link, left a message with Daniel who contacted me very quickly and worked with me to get a fan shipped out. I can't say enough about these guys. I'm hoping the use of a fan on top to suck out the hot air will work better and avoid these buffering and freezing issues. You've been a great help with all your tips and had to thank you once again for your great videos.

Order a noctua fan, they tend to be quieter. If the noctua fan you buy is the same db as another you will notice that it is a more soothing sound instead of a harsher sound compared to other fans. I ordered a trash can and your videos helped to seal the deal when it comes to trying it out. Thank you.

Hey Nate, I just bought one of these and have been using it for a few days. So far so good! My gateway is perched on a windowsill on the 2nd floor on the west side of my house. Now that summer is here and the temps are in the '90's, I was having problems in the afternoon and evening with losing my internet and having to reboot my gateway or even unplug it and let it cool off for a few minutes. I am not even using the wireless capability - I have it feeding directly into my Asus wireless router. After installing the fan, the temps dropped to 77F on the outside and 87F on the very top (I removed the fan to take a reading). Leaving the fan off for 15 minutes, I was getting temps of 95F on the side and 118F on the top. Since I got this fan a few days ago, I have had zero problems with losing my internet connection!

Thanks for sharing all of this. I am now 1 day into T Mobile internet. Performance is really good, but that's in large part, due to what's you've done and shared. - Most noticeable: know where the towers are and what they are capable of. I have two bars pretty much everywhere. One location is LTE only. Another is LTE and 5G. There's a noticeable difference. - I also noticed the heat and there you were! Picked up one of the fans (AC Infinity MULTIFAN S3) and it works great without the foam. Did change one thing: I have it pulling instead of pushing air through the gateway. Don't have objective data (temps), but to the touch it feels a little cooler. Thanks for doing this!!

Another informative video! I've used your first suggestion and have the fan located on the bottom. Since my Gateway sits on a small pedestal on the floor, I use a foam filter to cut down on dust in the unit between the fan and the router. Also found that vaccum hoses for cars, etc ,with a wood dowel to join the ends, work great to cover that bottom opening of the gateway. Because of the foam filter, I run the fan higher to get better air penetration and therefore liked the 3 speed design. Also to note, there is talk of a brand new gateway from T Mobile. Seems it's rumors presently but picture of it are circulating. If that's true these Etsy suppliers maybe short lived which is sad because I always like to see good old American ingenuity and give these guys two thumbs up! Thanks again for always keeping us updated. Anthony

I wouldn't keep a transmitter on my desk in general. I put mine in the basement and ran a cable up the wall, also picked up a pair of waveform antennae and mounted them outside the house instead. This fan is exactly what I need. I already fried 2 routers since I sometimes throw around quite large files for work and if a windows forced update download starts at the same time, it's reboot city more than productivity city with the trashcan. If you stumble on this, I got the fans on Amazon. It made a huge difference. When we had a heavy load ie gaming that can got hot and was iffy where I think it would overheat, and we'd loose connection once or twice a day not very long. Since the fan, we've had no issue, and, the can is Luke warm. You can barley hear the fan on high speed. Good tip and we think it made / helped. I've been using T Mobile internet for over 2 years. Started with the 4g router and went to Nokia 5g as soon as I was aware of it. It worked flawlessly until about 6 weeks ago. That's when the overheating started. I got a replacement gateway and it was actually worse. I bought the fan and it only marginally improved the situation. I was getting constant buffering and signal drops throughout the day. I got the tower location, moved the gateway, watched the videos, all to little or no improvement. I was about to drop the service when I saw a comment about disconnecting the mesh Wi-Fi system from the gateway. I had a Deco 6 mesh network and decided to unplug it. Since I have removed the mesh network I have not had any drops/buffering. I should point out that I used the mesh system for the entire time I have had the gateway and only had problems with overheating in the past couple of months. I also found that I had sufficient signal strength throughout the house without the mesh network. Just wanted to share my experience.

I opened my 5G21 and removed a large black unused bracket, 2 screws, that mounted right of the heat sink. With the air unblocked, you get a passive hurricane. Also, sit the tower on top of a wire bracket and if you are in crazy heat, wrap an acetate tube to extend way above the top, to increase the hot air pull. The wifis don't turn off on mine. I wish i could get the RJ11 phone jack and USB C working.

I purchased the smaller fan. Plugged it in and noticed a minor download improvement maybe, not significant. Noise not an issue. I had the modem plugged into an extra AC socket on an X10 interface module (that runs lights over AC). I moved the AC plug directly to a wall plug basically power cycling the modem for the first time (I think) since I'd gotten the fan. Previously I rarely ever saw the secondary signal on the modem PC web interface (I've never had the secondary signal last more than a few hours and can count on one hand the number of times ever) and only 2 bars showing on the primary. Suddenly I went from a max of around 80mbps, up to over 200 in one test (a new record). And now the modem PC web interface shows 3 bars on both the primary and 5G secondary signal consistently. Ping went down at least 50+%. Uploads went from avg 6-10 up to 40max. Coincidence? . Also running 5 devices from the wifi of the modem including up to 3 tvs at once.

Hi Nate, great video. I bought the black fan and adapter after I saw your last recommendation and I'm happy with the results. My question is: I have the gateway sitting on top of the fan and don't have weatherstripping like you do. Would there be any advantage to putting the fan on top of the gateway to draw the air through? Thanks again for your T-Mobile videos!
@NaterTater
@NaterTater 2 жыл бұрын
For best performance (top or bottom) you should seal up leak paths between the fan and gateway. That said it really doesn't need much airflow to cool down so if what your doing works, why change? You can do top or bottom mount. Each has pro/cons but either works.
@ricgrupe
@ricgrupe 2 жыл бұрын
This is cool (pun intended), but I actually prefer the black fan on the bottom. I was wondering why I would want to draw power from a unit that I was trying to cool. Probably too negligible to matter. Personally, I would rather set my gateway on/in a unit similar to this with the fan on the bottom. It would look better IMHO and do a better job. Vent slots would need to be milled below the fan for intake. Just my 2 cents and not meant to disparage this good idea at all.
@NaterTater
@NaterTater 2 жыл бұрын
Some do power from an external source but my logic is the extra power draw is really handled by the power "brick" which is in line with the power cord so not on the gateway itself.

Also, how thick is your deeper shroud unit that fits over the router. Mine is measuring 1 1/2 inch on the side. Just want to make sure i ordered the correct one. I wanted the larger one as you recommended. So far, after having it on for 2 hours, the trashcan has cooled down and it maybe a coincidence but speed increased by 50 mbps to over 200! Great seller to work with also. He really went out of his way to get this out to me. Hoping the fan corrects the trashcan from freezing up once a week needing a reboot. Does unit config screen show gateway temp? 68° what about summer. Did you measure throughput before and after fan mod, please?
@NaterTater
@NaterTater 2 жыл бұрын
The screen does not show temp. I have monitored speeds. For me its more about consistency and keep from band switching which hurts my speed drastically.

i keep having issues where I won't lose signal but the connection refuses to work unless i reset the router. is this a sign of overheating?

Could be. Another could be poor signal connection that drops.

Sorry we are trying as hard as we can. Being on etsy, you can't allow backorder in a conventional way. We could list the part, but then list the processing time to 15 business days. That doesn't seem right to do to our customers. I'll post when we have fans in stock. Looking to be about 5-7 days from now. Thanks for your patience and possible patronage!

@@NaterTater Not that simple. It's a question of whether you BLOW air onto the hot part or SUCK air past it. (Imagine trying to suck out a candle instead of blowing it out. :-) ) But, either will probably work to some degree. Your results speak for themselves in terms of the cooling. I measure the top of my own unit at about 115-120° F, with the wifi off, so it will be interesting to see the difference that it makes.
