➤Welcome to the “Cities Player Plans” video series. Cities Skylines 2 is out and now we must build! But how will we connect our freeways and highways efficiently? System interchanges allow you to extend your freeway network while keeping traffic in check. This video is all about understanding the included system interchanges in Cities Skylines 2!

When my brother and I first played the original cities skylines, our "off ramp" from the highway looked just like what you did at the beginning of the video. It eventually turned into a major crossing for the city and the highway was backed up for miles.

I've driven through Jacksonville once, had to drive through a massive stack interchange. Got off the interstate for gas and found an inverted Diamond. It's crazy seeing such extremes in interchanges in such a short distance sometimes, and these videos always strengthen my interest in the way our roads work and how we do urban development

The Problem with the Overleaf in CS2 is that the Cars use the exit lane with out exiting. You can see it in 6:05 the white car
@Pystro
@Pystro 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, I saw that. In C:S1 It was discouraged by the slower speeds of the 1-lane highway "ramp" compared to 2-lane and 3-lane highway. I don't know if C:S2 has a similar feature. Otherwise we have to wait for Traffic Manager before we can mess with speed limits, or use normal 2-lane 1-way roads for the weave section.

This happens in real life and is the scourge of the highway system near my home. People use the ramp lanes as another highway lane and mess up traffic for thousands of others so that they can gain a few car-lengths. It's practically psychopathic, and I wish they'd make it illegal.

All hail the Orange Crush in Southern California. In 2002 the Guiness World Records books listed it as the most complex road interchange in the world. It's where the I-5, SR22 and SR57 meet.

4:25 a few years ago, Arizona's Department of Transportation was planning on building something similar (3-level Diamond) at the interchange along I-17 at Indian School Rd, which is in Phoenix proper. That project has been postponed indefinitely. Even earlier, there was a plan they made to build a 3-level diverging diamond interchange (not a DCMI, as the third level was exclusively for through traffic, while the middle level was a diverging diamond for traffic getting on and off I-10) at the interchange along I-10 at Kolb Rd, if I remember correctly.

I just used cloverleaf in my city on Barrier Island map. I looked at it and realised that it’s just perfect to connect this bridge from island to highway build as urban highway at 10m above ground and connecting rest of the city without any changes to this interchange. Just plug and play. Fits perfectly

The problem with traffic in game is that when cars want to get off from highway into the slip lanes to turn e.g. right, they do it from the left lane. So nobody can drive straight, cars on the right lane wait for those from left lane to turn into the slip lane. Idk I prolly don’t know how to play but this is the problem I get 😅

@bakatraitless
@bakatraitless 6 ай бұрын
Just an initial suspicion with my experience, my working theory is that it has something to do with it’s pathing. As long as the road ahead of them (for a certain distance) doesn’t require them to turn, they start to prioritize the lane that they predict (calculated from the amount of cars in front of their lane vs the other?) will get them to their destination the fastest. Works great when the other vehicles don’t have the same logic, but they seem to do. With that springing issue, you see a bunch of cars doing as you said: all in the left (or other lanes that aren’t the dedicated slip lane) within roughly the same distance, slow down and forcefully turn to the slip lanes. My short-term solution has been to brute force the amount of lanes present, or divide the lanes much further back if possible. However, having to compensate so much for this logic tends to leave me more frustrated with the Car AI sometimes, especially if road traffic significantly increases specifically because of this situation. Other traffic issues I’ve had usually stem for poor road hierarchy, or poor route planning on my part. In the end, I do hope they improve on the Car AI as much as they can. Would love to play CS2 at its best.

I live pretty close to a type B2 partial cloverleaf (parclo), so maybe that's why I love trumpet interchanges so much. They're elegant and cheap, not a lot of bridge or tunnel work needed. A type A4 parclo is pretty much 2 trumpets combined and probably my favorite. But a couple of roundabouts in there and make them dumbbells for good meassure.

Great video again Yumble, it's what I have come to expect from you as well I always look forward to your posts. If I recall correctly, I tend to prefer the less conventional Partial Cloverleaf (2B) version. Using only the far-side leaf on each side and in some cases, I opt for a 4 lane overpass each way instead of 4 two-lane overpasses. The last update they pushed has broken the traffic mechanics, even at the fastest speed the cars crawl and have some bizarre behaviours at off-ramps.

Stack is the best for the busiest intersections. The bonus thing is you can add more roads near the interchange which won't break your grids.

The worst example of "the weave" I've had to drive is in Quebec on the East side of Montreal where you have to decide whether you are going around the city to the North or South, or else making the terrible decision to drive though it. There is always a crazy amount of traffic, most of the drivers are insane, and there is a permanent, car-sized pothole under the bridge right where the wweaving occurs.

I often think about road heirarchy scale in this game. How many highways, and thus system interchanges, does a map need? My city of 110k was reasonably well served by a single highway east to west with collectors, on Tampere. To be fair, most of my population lived in a single high density urban center.

Thank you! I think freeways through downtown are generally a poor use of space in what should be the densest most livable parts of the city. Unless you’re less concerned with making a livable place and looking to make a more freeway heavy (American style) city. Then go for it! It’s a stylistic choice, but either way can work.

Freeways should go around, not through, the most valuable (central) part of a city. In CS I like building tunnels underneath, though! That's more expensive in real life.
