** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Simon reveals one of his favourite types of puzzle today in having a crack at Tulpenblüte by Myxo. We're not sure how much to write about this sudoku: suffice it to say that if we ever make another book, this one needs to be in it.

Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits along a thick magenta line form a consecutive sequence without repeats, in any order. Digits connected by a thin green line must differ by at least 5.

19:02 Simon's brain refuses to do simple sudoku again, instead comes up with a convoluted reasoning to reach the same goal. Then he repeats it again, then goes on to praise the puzzle's creator how uniquely beautiful and elegant this logic is.

Yeah to me the praise really rings hollow when it's due to him being a complete numpty and missing something so blindingly obvious. Kind of takes away from the puzzle and its constructor when it's complimented for being so genius when in reality... it's basic sudoku that Simon is just ignoring.

Praise sincerely meant is never hollow. Simon prefers the logical beauty to the simpler path - and so for him, to praise a puzzle's beauty and elegance is the highest praise possible. It is entirely sincere.@@chuckdecker3765

unfortunately many people do not have time to watch those, and than the algorithm decides to punish the channel for the lower viewer retention by reducing the number of exposure by several thousand also for the shorter videos that follows. So they can't really do that too often. A few time per year perhaps? I suspect the several shorter (a few years ago a 30 minute video would be considered long, not anymore) videos lately is to appease the algorithm to regain views.

I got stuck about 20 minutes into my solve, so I paused my solve and started watching Simon's. Then he said something about the make-up of the lower left renban that triggered a notion about the central renban in my puzzle. So then I paused the video and went back to my puzzle. That bit of inspiration helped get me unstuck on the central renban, and I got moving forward again. My final time (ignoring the pause to watch Simon for a bit) was 40:01, solver number 1031.

I was able to figure out that 1289 could never be on the non-german whisper parts of the renban line and that if 16 was one gw line, it had to be paired with 27, same with 49 and 38, but for some reason, I never really felt comfortable even until the end. The logic around the 18:00 minute mark revolving around the digits in box 4 -where does r6c2 go in box 1 and r4c2 in box 7... so much simpler ways to do that - in one case you know there's a 6 on the bottom line somewhere, and by sudoku of the 6 in r1c1 it has to go in r6c2. And the 34 pair at the bottom of column 1 makes r3c1 an 89 and r4c2 thusly a 34

Yes. Simon’s thoroughness is both a blessing and a curse. I’m almost the complete opposite, in that I’m always leaving the current trail if something I find refers back to something I deduced earlier. I think my way is quicker on average, but Simon’s is more likely to actually find every bit of logic.

This video would 5 minutes shorter if Simon said "1 through 7" instead of "1 2 3 4 5 6 7", and the same for other options. As for the puzzle itself, it's great how a single logic created by it's structure gets so much mileage throughout the whole thing.

Hello Simon, lovely solve as always. I enjoyed it very much. My own attempt took me a little over 90 minutes. I noticed you saying you misclick sometimes because you press the spacebar too often, around 37:27. Might I try to help you with that? I usually don't use the spacebar at all, but instead press "shift" to switch to corner notation, press "control" to switch to central notation and press both shift and control to switch to colour notation. Releasing the button(s) automatically switches back to definitive notation (to enter digits in the grid). At least for me this way of using notation in Sven’s Sudokupad has been quite helpful, I thought i'd share it. Keep up the good work, your videos are always an entertaining watch!

He means that the digit in box 8 has to go somewhere in row 9. It can't go in box 7 because it can't repeat in the line. It can't go in box 8 because it's already in box 8. So that digit in row 9 has to go into box 9. The only possibilities in those cells are 467, so if that digit in box 8 was a "2", there is no place to put a "2" anywhere in row 9. So it must be a "7".

Watching Simon solve the puzzle makes sense and I might just be misunderstanding, but I think the rules may have been communicated incorrectly for this puzzle. The rules say "Digits connected by a thin green line must differ by AT LEAST 5" (which implies that two digits could differ by more than 5 - like 6 or 7), but Simon seemingly approaches the problem with the understanding that "Digits connected by a thin green lean differ by exactly 5". The end solution only has digits separated by 5, so I imagine that was the intended rule? But I felt lost approaching the problem at first and trying to account for differences of 6 or 7 in addition to 5. If I'm wrong, please help me understand what I missed!
@dettonator11
@dettonator11 5 ай бұрын
He did account for that - that was what he was talking about at the beginning before he started putting numbers in. There are only 3 possible sets of numbers on 7-cell renban lines: [1234567], [2345678], and [3456789]. Remember that on every 2-cell green line, there must be a low digit [1234] and a high digit [6789]. If not, their difference cannot be 5 or more. So, let's go case by case. If the renban contains [1234567], there are only 2 high digits to "assign" to the 2 green lines, 6 and 7. 6 can only take 1 as its partner, and 7 can't take anything higher than 2, so 2 is all that's left. If the renban contains [2345678], there seem to be more options, but the low digit can't be 4 because there is no 9 to go with it; likewise the high digit can't be 6 because there's no 1. What's left is two low digits [23] and two high digits [78]. Those four go on the green lines. 7 can't take 3 so it must take 2, and 8 takes 3. Finally, if the renban contains [3456789], there are only two low digits, 3 and 4. 4 must take 9, and 3 can't take anything below 8, so 8 is the only option remaining. To check our logic, let's imagine a scenario where we didn't follow these restrictions - let's say we paired 9 and 3 on a green line. Because the renban has 9 on it, we know the set is [3456789]. So what pair of numbers goes on the OTHER green line in this renban? It can't be 4, since 9 is taken; it can never be 5; and neither 6, 7, nor 8 are 5 greater than 4. So there are NO options for the other green line, and the puzzle breaks. You will see that no matter what pair of numbers you choose, if they are not exactly 5 apart, the puzzle breaks with no remaining options for the second pair. QED

@@dettonator11 Wow, thank you for writing that out!! Your explanation is more than I could have asked for. I had a hard time understanding the full context of that reasoning in the video but the way you broke it down makes complete sense. Sincerely appreciate it.

Didn't you simplify the problem by changing the rule to "numbers on green lines are exactly 5 apart" instead of the original problem where they have to be "differ by least 5"? So a 7 for example could be 1 or 2, and you instantly took it as a revealed 2. You concluded a lot of numbers because you had one of the green numbers, but in reality it would only give you the choice of two options. The solution obviously meets the criteria but i wonder how much more difficult it'd have been to find it if you didn't cheat a bit by switching up the boundary conditions. Or am I seeing this wrong?

It’s a conclusion that can be drawn from the puzzle. Suppose a 7 digit renban went 1-7. There need to be two possible german whisper pairs from that set. The highs are 6 and 7, so the lows are 1 and 2. If the seven was paired with one, it would be impossible to make another pair 5 apart. Similar logic can be repeated for a 2-8 string and a 3-9 string. Basically, try to fill out a length 7 renban with 2 german whisper pairs. It will break if you try with anything not exactly five apart.

@ 39:01 - "I could have got some sudoku wrong" - You mean you did some? I must have blinked and missed it. You had so many easy wins all over the show, all left dangling. For instance you placed 7 in box 2, and there was already a 7 in box 8. Did you think to ask where 7 goes in box 5? Of course not, but there was only one place. You placed 8 in box 3, and about 5 minutes later you spotted that it resolved the 89 pair in box 1. You should have done that when you placed the 8. This was some very elegant setting, using an idea that's certainly new to me.

That was fun, 72 minutes, though, I failed to see a lot of the logic. Still, finished it with a 3 in the corner, so that was a win.
