Algebra II on Khan Academy: Your studies in algebra 1 have built a solid foundation from which you can explore linear equations, inequalities, and functions. In algebra 2 we build upon that foundation and not only extend our knowledge of algebra 1, but slowly become capable of tackling the BIG questions of the universe. We'll again touch on systems of equations, inequalities, and functions...but we'll also address exponential and logarithmic functions, logarithms, imaginary and complex numbers, conic sections, and matrices. Don't let these big words intimidate you. We're on this journey with you!
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.
For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything

In a few contexts, log means log base e instead of base 10. Of course, it would be better to use "ln" for that. An example is the programming language r. log just means ln and and log10 means log base 10. logb for any other base.

very late reply lol -if your bases are different, just simply turn the log form into the "index". Like: log_4 16 + log_3 9 = log_4 4^2 + log_3 3^2 = 2(1) + 2(1) =4

How do you solve logs with different bases? I know you use change of base, but I just need an explanation. Example: log4 16 = log2 32
@thesource6673
@thesource6673 10 жыл бұрын
log 4 16 can be written as log 2 in square 16 ( and now the bases are same ) sorry for my english!
@Pierseus
@Pierseus 10 жыл бұрын
Log to the base 4 of 16 equals 2 and log to the base 2 of 32 equals 5. That problem ends up saying 2=5 (which obviously isn't true.) sometimes by just looking at the logarithm, you can figure out an exact number/quantity it's equal to and go from there. I'm taking honors pre Calc as a high school sophomore, and I can't be of much help, but I hope that somewhat helps and gives you another way to analyze them. I have my finals tomorrow as a matter of fact. That's why I looked this up. Haha

Just having some trouble with something that might be trivial but nevertheless any help would be appreciated. y=log10 8
@wrenerickson5102
@wrenerickson5102 10 жыл бұрын
well from what i know this will be a very large decimal now assuming you can't use a calculator you would probably simplify it y=log10(8) y=(log(8)/log(10)) y=(3log(2)/log(10)) y=(3log(2)/log(2)+log(5)) otherwise a calculator will suffice

You don't need to know the base, because there are no 10's in the solution. Also, some people use log for base e as a standard.
@nakajimasara

Almost all calculators have a standard base of 10 for Log. And people use Ln for base e, not Log.

Why 10 ?
@cubicinfinity2
@cubicinfinity2 Жыл бұрын
10 is a good standard because we write numbers usually in base 10. on a log 10 scale, 1000000 (1 million) becomes 6 and 1000 becomes 3. It makes graphs and stuff easier to interpret. That being said, another really common base is e (Euler's constant). Usually for base e, you write "ln" for "natural log", but I'll warn there are some rare cases when "log" actually means "ln".
@Nenmeu2
@Nenmeu2 7 жыл бұрын
But why do you put 10 ?
@TheMilkManCow
@TheMilkManCow 7 жыл бұрын
When you don't have a base already stated then it is assumed to be 10.

because log 10 equals x as the opposite of exponents
@cubicinfinity2
@cubicinfinity2 Жыл бұрын
10 is a convenient number that makes it easier for people to interpret data since we write numbers normally in base 10.
