In this special report, Sky's Martin Brunt looks at London's knife crime epidemic, and claims that the courts and prisons are not doing enough to help police tackle the problem.
There were 80 fatal stabbings in London last year, the highest number for almost a decade, leading to an increase in officers' use of controversial stop and search powers.

There is a huge difference between guns and knives. That’s like saying it’s OK for everybody to carry around a rocket launcher as long as there’s the right social mentality in a country, everybody can have rocket launchers and be fine. No, of course not. We’ve been rocket launchers because they’re too much destruction. I have multiple guns and I do not support trying to ban guns. But to compare a tool like a knife which is a force multiplier of 1-2 to a gun which is a force multiplier of 100 is crazy. And if what I said is not enough to make somebody understand that knives and guns are night and day, then think about many cities the size of this city that are absolutely terrorized by a much smaller amount of guns in the hands of criminals than a knife in the hands of a huge amount of people. Like I said, night and day.

I wish us firearms licence holders could carry handguns for protection. Even if we are required to do training courses, have a different licence, stringent mental health exams. Part of deterrence is a person being able to defend themselves. Not taking away all weapons in hopes that Mankind's good nature as history has proved will prevail. The differences in United States we may be a gun culture however people are less inclined to want to be injured as a result of their inclination to commit crime towards another individual. Those that do take their lives into their own hands and their safety as well. If they are willing to throw the dice for the gamble then there is a price that may be paid higher than what they originally thought it to be. We have our share of knife crime here in Norway too. Recently a man was stabbed on a tram in Oslo, unprovoked. He survived and the culprit was held back and arrested. When I was a teenager, in the 1980's and 90's, I could carry a pocket knife to school without any problems. Not as a weapon, but as a tool. Stabbings in schools was just something we heard about from the USA back then. I couldn't have done that today.

Glasgow had 112 murders (4.5 per 100,000) in 2007-08 and this is somehow far higher than the rest of the 'developed' world. Baltimore MD and Glasgow have similar populations and Baltimore had 282 murders (45.2 per 100,000) in 2007.
