I think if you use elements to market your game, like in Cyberpunk 2077, and don't add them. It may not be a full blown scam, but it is incredibly scammy. Some of those things may not be the whole reason you bought the game, but all the little things not added in adds up to a bigger scam like picture. Love, your content Riloe! Always great production value, and logical inferences in them :)
@NotTheStinkyCheese14 күн бұрын
but often we don't know *why* the elements were not added into the game, unless we dig deeper. Maybe it was technically impossible to do so (it might have worked in the high end machines, but it didn't scale to consumer level). Maybe it was not as fun as it appeared to be ... (if 'fun' was predictable we would not have as much trial & error) Or maybe ... they ran out of time and had to ship what they had (even Hideo Kojima had to acknowledge that ... ) And sometimes we get lucky when even though the initial release was imperfect ... the team manages to convince management that it is worth the resources to finish the things that got cut. No Man's Sky ... major updates post release with a load of added content. Cyberpunk 2077 got a major mechanics overhaul after launch, which changes how the game is played. Yes, a lot of the stuff that got added/updated would have been nice to have at launch, but we got it in the end.

I have to say it's amazing how many people pre-order these "games".A company that has never made any other game arrives, announces a "big project", launches several trailers and teasers with incredible graphics and animations and BOOM, everyone is already going to the store .I would even understand if it was something like cyberpunk2077 where an already known and respected company announces the game, but we are talking about a company that came up "out of nowhere" and never announced or created any other Game(Not that new companies can't create incredible games, in recent years we've seen several new studios, mainly independent ones, launching quality products.)
@wheredookie4 ай бұрын
Depends entirely on how one defines scam, which could be pretty broad. I'd argue The Day Before is the most blatant example as an asset-flip scam, but I'd also label games like Star Citizen and Escape From Tarkov as being a more drawn-out, perpetual early-access-as-a-service scam-and I think that's what I fear GZW will be, and why I have zero expectations for it. (great edit and pace to your vid essays btw, very compelling as a visual experience)
@EvilAnomaly4 ай бұрын
Interesting take but I don't see it. TDB was a scam as a scam can get that only Steam prevented from succeeding. I don't see the "perpetual early access as a service" being a scam. IF either of those games were barebones and using "we're in early access" as an excuse then YES. But both those games easily match with full release titles so I don't see the scam in them. Sure they're taking forever and not announcing themselves as full releases but I'm not seeing the scam in that. Rather or not someone likes that is one thing but there's no scam involved in it. I've easily gotten my $45 out of SC more than full release games that I've paid $60 on, same with EFT. Not sure why you see GZW as having that potential.
@NotTheStinkyCheese13 күн бұрын
Star Citizen is not a scam. It's a developer who doesn't know when to say "no". It's the software equivalent of "one more turn" As much as artists hate the bean counters ... they need someone looking over their shoulder to say "enough / ship it". Same thing happened with DayZ, Team Fortress 2 (anyone old enough to remember the development hell of that game ?), Duke Nukem Forever. If we're lucky the game gets shipped and it's fun. If we're not so lucky the game is simply not as fun as we thought it would be and competing companies produced something a little lighter but still more finished (Elite Dangerous vs Star Citizen ... ).

Very good video, I've been saying this for a while in that games have taken a significant decrease in quality for the sake of making short term profits, dumping the project, then moving onto the next. A game I was very excited for called TWD: Saints and Sinners Retribution suffered this exact problem, the trailers showed numerous "gameplay" shots that never existed in the actual game. Explosions in the background, very large groups of zombies, open world exploration, none of it stuck to the final product. Though I see it as a blessing in disguise, as all the indie developers can finally have a legitimate spotlight when they make something incredible. (And also a great reason to get into game development now)

I tend to follow a similar round of steps when it comes to a new game. I haven't been disappointed in a game for a very long time; having gone through many for so long it became easy to see exactly as you mentioned. All too often I'd wonder how so many people couldn't see what was so clear to me, but I've noticed it also comes down to people adding what they want in their minds to the games being marketed. Disseminating the information actually given by the developers rather than projecting what we believe or want can provide enough on its own to avoid a lot of disappointment. Sure, there can be incredibly dishonest people out there that can make even a discerning individual not see through the smoke, and one person's idea of what's scummy or worth their money can differ to another's, but most often if you remove a lot of the noise and just focus on the hard details, you can see closest to the truth and avoid being deceived. Without going to any specific examples, I've seen with multiple games that people get upset over that they expected something that was explicitly not said or even was described by developers in a different way than what was expected, so while I was enjoying these games people were losing it. That being said, it can't be expected that people should have to comb over everything all the time, but the purpose of marketing is to get you to buy the product. Be it by making something look like more than it is or by just shoving it in your face enough that you cave in. I feel like your video is a good start for people that need guidance to look past the marketing, but the fact it's needed at all just sucks.

The one that bothers me the most was No mans sky. Looking at it now it’s easily a gem but to think If they had more time to cook up the game they might’ve avoided shooting themselves in the foot and ruining a lot of trust the devs had. Even to this day they’re shipping updates and it feels like they’re still trying to make up for the disastrous launch. Props out to them for weathering out the hate and putting their money where their mouth is.

Some MMO's and a handful of kickstart esq games using established names to sell us short is still a thing, so to that notion; research well. So, I’m curious, Riloe, could games (like The Day Before) have lawsuits against them for false advertising? They gave us an idea of what it would be like, and by the time it released, it was nothing close to that idea. Thousands of ppl bought it either in hopes it was real or to expose it being an actual money grab scam. I’ll be honest, I was looking forward to it for over a year. I love the post apocalyptic genre. I was and grew increasingly skeptical of the game, but I tried to keep hopes up it might be real. In the end, I never bought it (a hardcore zombie game enjoyer) and watched streamers fork over $40 to show audiences that it indeed was fake all along.

Also, if we educate ourselves enough, that'll reduce the number of scams
@tropicalfruit45714 ай бұрын
That's pretty fine for these games that appear out of nowhere, but how do we educate people on AAA scam games? Not only do you need to know how game engines work (even just as a consumer), but you also need to get burnt like 2-3 times to know the non-obvious red flags. My issue for the longest time was thinking that the companies that have made good games in the past, their most recent games are good, and they're not soulless like EA or Ubisoft, they can't make a shit and unfinished game, right? RIGHT?! Well, while these games are not scams, they're... cash grabs? Games just don't come out finished anymore, and many of them don't ever get finished. They collect the money because of the franchise name, do bare minimum to call it a game, and they make a new quadruple A game that nobody wants to play.
@riloegaming4 ай бұрын
Honestly for AAA it’s simple. Never pre-order. Never buy a game until it’s been released, and reviewed. Content creators NEED to buy games the second they come out, but normal people really don’t.

I sincerely hope that more gamers are increasingly getting wise to "cinematic gameplay" trailers for games that though may not be deliberate outright scams should still be taken with a pinch of salt and a healthy dose of skepticism. I can understand that these are marketing ploys intended to entice and pitch the game to potential customers of the fantasy it is espousing, but especially for multiplayer games with some scripted events and interactions and cringe "player" voice acting should at the very least raise some eyebrows. And no pre-orders.

You keep mentioning/showing the Division. I never saw a lot of marketing for it, but I thought it looked neat and has become one of my favorite games of my adolescence. I bought the Divison 2 and played the crap out of it. The short is: I bought the Division, and got a game where I sunk a lot of my time into it, no regrets. I didn't follow a lot of the marketing for No Man's Sky either, just saw the trailers, took them as "oh that's pretty!" and at most was disappointed that my UI was not the same crazy, artsy one they showed. I would say neither of these games are "scams". However, one comes from a long line of false advertising practices, and the other is an introvert that got in over his head. I may have also started acquiring this skill to see through the smoke early on. Or I have crap taste in media. Anywho leave me to my silly space dinosaurs.

Scam game for me doesnt have to be a game made entirely to steal your money. If the marketing is just false in what a game has to offer. Like overtly were its not a mistake that already enough for me. Its usually not the intent of the developers then, but caused by the decisions of publishers to rush games
@Soul-Burn4 ай бұрын
I want to address something that ties with scams, but aren't exactly scam - over hyping games in ways that they were not showed to be. When "No Man's Sky" was first revealed, it looked to me nice but not groundbreaking. We've seen procedural games before and know their limitations. Many people thought it would be much more than it was, much more than was shown. Yes, the devs faked the trailers, but even if they had what they *showed*, it would have been much less than what people thought it would be. The game released wasn't a scam, and it was OK and eventually a pretty good game after updates, but it was never what people hyped it to be. My rule with early access / previews is to only expect what we actually see. If you buy into a game, buy it if you like what you currently see, and don't expect it to become anything else. In the case of Gray Zone, I started skeptical about the project in general, which was quickly shown to be real, with real graphics and systems. We haven't seen all the faction stuff, AI, and generally gameplay other than the moment to moment gun fights. It looks promising, but even a good team with good intentions can fail to deliver on big goals. Keep up the great videos!
