Diplomatic tension between Somalia and Ethiopia are escalating over a 20-kilometer deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland that allowed Ethiopia to establish a port and naval base along the Red Sea coast. Somalia's Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre says his country won't cede an inch of its territory.

UAE Emirates deal is only commercial in nature for managing the port of berbera for 30 years and its approved by the Federal government of Somalia. The UAE Emirates deal does not include a military base or any recognition of somaliland as a state. This is the difference that matters.

It’s a very bone headed move by Ethiopia and quite honestly surprised. Ethiopia has probably more organised ethnic liberation movements than any country in Africa, multiple regions are clamouring for independence. They just ended a 2 year civil war against Tigray who wanted to secede. The flames in Oromia is still burning and the Somali region can blow up anytime .Not to mention Abiy completely violated the Tripartite Agreement with Eritrea & Somalia signed in 2018 which states that they must all “respecting each other's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity”. Seems like Abiy’s agreements aren’t worth the paper they are written on.

It does not look like Ethiopia put sufficient thought into this endeavor, and this happened after arms embargo has just been lifted & Al-shabaab is on its back foot. Some might interpret this as if Ethiopia rushed, as now or never, before Somalia regains strength. From a cynical geopolitical struggle, you want to keep your rivals weak & divided, and many Somalis believe this is what Ethiopia has always been doing, and the actions of Abiy on this matter works to confirm it for them. My Pan-Africanist thoughts says that Ethiopia could have pursued a more cooperative approach with Somalia (or Eritrea), and put proposals amicable to both sides on the table, and leave this cynical western style zero-sum geopolitics behind, and only dealing with the internationally recognized government. Their current approach has now poisoned any discussion on this matter, it was a very poorly thought-out strategy, likely pushed by extremist elements within his administration, maybe ideas born after a night of heavy drinking. As this project gets sour, I expect Ethiopia to backtrack, and those extremist elements within Ethiopian government to sober up.
