Their resilience is next to none and that’s due to the unshakeable faith in Allah. The main reason for Muslims to say insha'Allah is to recognise that an event in the future will happen only if God wills it. So when I say “I'll go to the dentist this morning before work, insha'Allah,” I am acknowledging that what I intend to do cannot be fully guaranteed. They know the famine is political. Its not like somalia was always like this, in the 70s-80s, somalis was called rhe perl of indian Ocean, it was beautiful...war can destroy any nation...look at gaza, iraq and Syria now

I can't remember where we leave our votes or if its too late but I vote for Harland Williams as guest and travel stories of the year, his poem at the end made me cry and I could see how surprised and moved you were as well, because like many other people, I thought he was going to do a bit but quickly realized he was being 💯 sincere! Duncan Trussel and Robert Kelly are also kind of tied for first, for me. I've quite honestly loved and enjoyed each episode almost equally, you also do a great job about asking the type of questions that lead to incredible stories, sometimes even a random comment or joke can spark a memory about their story they may not have thought to share if it hadn't been said. I fucking loved this episode too, Tommy T is the shit! Damn, its so hard to decide but fuckin A man I'm gonna go with my gur and vote Harland! Mush love my good sir! I’m Irish, live in Tanzania, been to Nairobi many times. It does my feckin head in these ngo’s, charities and diplomatic agencies that totally scaremonger and misrepresent the places they operate in. Walking around central Nairobi in the middle of the day is totally safe. The damage they do to the image of Africa obliterates any good they do. And the people here are very much aware of this fact which causes more hostility than any lingering grudges about colonialism. East Africa is great and very tourist friendly. Better visit and have the holiday of a lifetime than donate to the self serving aid industry. Much more of your money will remain here.

There is definitely an element of stoicism in Somali culture. There is a strong sense of gratitude being important. Just like many collectivist cultures, your purpose is to help serve your community. So growing up you learn not to just focus on yourself or be in your feelings as much. Unfortunately, with the more recent chaos, a lot of ancient Somali wisdom and ideologies are being eroded/lost. They have been replaced in part with a more conservative Islamic interpretation and the culture from those areas. Somali people resisted that for so long and followed what was a more open minded interpretation similar to Turkey. Plus, they had their own monotheistic religion so they amalgamated their own cultural ideas with that Abrahamic religion. The more developed they got, they became less conservative. Its rather sad to see the regression especially for women over just a few decades. There is now a whole generation of kids that only know this reality.
