I always find it interesting watching smaller creators talking about the same things that I remember from my childhood. It genuinely feels like a glimpse back to my younger self, and how I used to make videos on old channels that never got more than several dozen views. Those were the days. Great video, keep it up, and I hope to see you grow!

I loved this game so much as a kid and weirdly enough I never actually finished it until only a couple months ago. I kept coming back to it and getting a little farther each time before putting it down and coming back and starting over again another time. I also had a borrowed copy as a kid (from my Great Aunt) and remember being so excited when I got a copy of my own. I don't feel like there is any other game I have a stronger attachment too and it's so awesome to see I wasn't unique in having that connection to it.

It feels a little surreal to hear what is essentially the exact same experiences I had with SPM. It’s still my go to choice for when people ask me my favorite video game too! I always appreciate people who make these very focused retrospectives a talk about memories they have with the series. I’ve watched most of your Nintendo videos and they are so similar to the type of content I want to make in the future. Super Paper Mario was one of my first ever video games, alongside Mario Galaxy and the classic mario games. I first played it before I’d properly learned to read, so my dad had to read me the dialogue, since there’s a lot of it. I’ve replayed it lots since then and came to appreciate it more and more. When you described how you were finally able to appreciate the story, I completely understood that. Like you, I loved the game before I understood the story, and even more now I do. I miss the days of complex storytelling and crazy characters in Mario games and I hope they’ll go back to them someday.

Super Paper Mario was also the first Paper Mario Game I played and I too love it. It's probably one of my favorite games (if it hadn't been for Ace Attorney). You described it really well and some things are really relatable, especially being stuck in the overthere as a kid. Seriously, it was just the worst. But i just love the rest of the game and as you said the story was absolutely amazing. It was literally written like an anime and not like a typical Nintendo Mario game at all. Sadly Nintendo doesn't make Mario games like these anymore because we all know how Nintendo thinks nowadays. Also the soundtrack is godlike and also very fitting and emotional, it has just the perfect soundtrack in my eyes. I also read on the Wiki that one of the composers wife or husband worked on the Origami King soundtrack, maybe that's the reason why both of those OSTs are just perfect.
@sombertoboggly
@sombertoboggly 2 жыл бұрын
yes the overthere still gets on my nerves haha! but yeah, nintendo doesn't make games like this anymore and it's unfortunate. this game really is just unlike anything else. however i was pretty pleased with origami king, and like you said the soundtrack for that game seriously is wonderful. appreciate the comment!
@Phoenix_Wrong
@Phoenix_Wrong 2 жыл бұрын
@@sombertoboggly Yeah origami king was pretty decent and the people also seem to like it more than the previous two games. i still would've preferred something like the first three games but it still did fairly well. Aside from the soundtrack I also found the battle system interesting, especially the boss battles, and the locations. the locations were unique and UNBELIEVABLY beautiful. the only thing I absolutely hate about this game is that you NEED TO PLAY THE GAME WITHOUT DYING AND WITHOUT USING ANY BADGES TO TRULY 100% THE GAME AND IT DOESN'T SAY THAT AT ANY POINT IN THE GAME, and the funny thing is that there is one point in the game where you have to decide where you want to go next and if you choose the wrong way YOU GET EATEN BY A CHAIN CHOMP AND THEREFORE AN INSTANT GAME OVER WITHOUT ANY WAY TO TELL WHICH PATH IS THE CORRECT ONE. or maybe I was just dumb xd, but I really don't know what I had to look for.

Super Paper Mario has been one of the first memorable games I've played myself as well. I think I've managed to finish it at 10 to 11 years old as well, but I did get stuck at the prison part for a while. I remember thinking Dimentio was the coolest villain I had ever seen. As a kid, me and my friend got stuck in world 3 and never made it past that lol. Yeats later(I was very young, still in 4th grade lol) another friend randomly mentioned the game, and I remembered that I never beat it. So I went back and did finally beat it, but you better believe 4th grade me was just skipping most of the dialogue lol. And besides, romance stories are just considered cringe by children. Quite a few years later I replayed it (I was going on a huge spree of just revisiting old Wii games of mine), and it quickly became my favorite game. The story is amazing, the visuals are great, there’s some humor and life injected into he main Mario cast, and Peach was more than just someone who needed saving. It truly is a one of a kind deal, and I highly doubt Nintendo will ever make a game like it again. But it really, really is something special.

i didn't get stuck in chapter 3 but i do remember being so close to dying without any items to replenish my hp so i ended up hitting a koopa shell over and over again to level up so i wouldn't die hahaha. and yeah i skipped over pretty much all the dialogue until i was 11ish. but it truly is such a special game, holds more charm than any nintendo game in my opinion. but a whole lot of older games (late 90s and early 00s are my favorite) are just great. it sucks they don't make games like this anymore. appreciate the comment!
@MCA_Critic
@MCA_Critic 2 жыл бұрын
@@sombertoboggly older games really are the ones where it’s at, especially concerning Nintendo. As I mentioned, I was revisiting plenty of my Wii games and not just SPM, and I was surprised by how well some of them held up, and how much more I could appreciate them. Mario Galaxy was great, and still much better than the second overall to me(you can actually see how original stories were beginning to go away with Galaxy 2, still mad Rosalina was only at the end) simply because Rosalina and her family of lumas gave the player such a motive to actually beat Bowser. There are some other great games too like Epic Mickey(if you don’t know what that is, I highly recommend picking it up. It was my favorite game before I revisited SPM), which modern day Disney would never be bold enough to create. Maybe one day we’ll see Nintendo tolerate a good story, but I doubt it. Ask I got stuck in world 3 because my stupid brain couldn’t figure out the puzzle where you had to ground pound in the underwater level. I figured it out instantly this time around, made me cringe at how oblivious my younger self was lol

When I was in elementary school, I had a friend who was really into this game. He'd always tell me about it & how I had to play it, he even gave me drawings of some of the characters! While I was interested in it, the game ended up bein' too expensive, so I settled for watchin' let's plays and gameplay videos. Even though I did love those videos and SPM's story, I always felt like I was missin' somethin' by not playin' it myself. Well, come my senior year of HS, long after I fell outta contact with said friend, I found a copy for cheap at a second-hand place. I figured "better late than never" and bit the bullet. Soo, on the incredibly small chance he comes across this video... You were right, Jacob. You were so right.

this was literally my childhood, too. platformers were really the only games i was familiar with at the time, and super paper mario was such a surprise to play. i remember hating how long the cutscenes were at the time, lol. and me being a brainless "get from point a to b" platformer kid, i only made it to around, say, not far past Mimi's mansion. i think i picked it up a few years later and got slightly farther, but i specifically remember repeatedly ragequitting at that one tree level. you know the one, and it wasn't until less than a year i ago i finally went and finished the game... it felt so strange to play more new parts of a game i had so much nostalgia for, and JESUS CHRIST WHY DID I GO AND DECIDE TO BEAT THE FLOPSIDE PIT OF TRIALS OH GOD PLEASE NEVER AGAIN AAAAA- (anyways love the video, hope your channel grows because you make pretty high quality content!)

Super Paper Mario is definitely interesting for a Mario game, and especially so for a Paper Mario game, it has this surprisingly deep story dealing with concepts like the inevitability of death, the horror of knowing the future, the tragedy of a lost love, this is a story you'd expect to see in an rpg, but, as an entry in what has been up to this point, a series of rpg games, well, a series of two games, this one is just a platformer. When would you ever expect a kind of story like this in a Mario game? It's pretty out of of left field for a series about two italian plumbers rescuing a princess from a fire-breathing turtle. I liked Super Paper Mario, too, and the story definitely stuck with me when I first played through it back when I was twelve, but the original Paper Mario has always been my favorite, I have such great memories playing through it with my dad and my sister when I was little. Thanks for the video, it's cool to hear someone's experience with this game.

when i first played this game i couldnt even get past the first battle with o'chunks haha it's really cool to see other people who like this game, though!! its not one you hear about often which is surprising for a mario game, and not one you really hear about POSITIVELY often, either, which is... [glances over at sticker star] a little less surprising for a mario game but very surprising for THIS mario game specifically. i'm not normal about it at all and even though i missed out on a good chunk of that whole childhood nostalgia by failing to clear the first full chapter, it sticks with me a lot since my first full playthrough the main thing i remember from playing it as a kid was that the void absolutely terrified me and i think i wouldve lost my mind if i had gotten to a point where you actually see the void grow i think i would have cried.

I’ve been looking for a retrospective of this game. I don’t have a wii right now and I’ve never finished the game but I plan to.

you definitely should if you ever get the chance. the game has its weak points but the story and atmosphere make it well worthwhile in my opinion! which is also why i think finishing the game might make people enjoy it more.

I'm curious if you've played Super Mario RPG; its another somewhat out there setting with an interesting mix of traditional Mario elements and classical RPG tropes, story included.

mario rpg is pretty much the spiritual predecessor of the paper mario franchise! but i've unfortunately never actually played it myself. i do have an SNES but the game seems to go for a lot these days. i'll play it eventually though!

@@sombertoboggly Definitely worth going through at least once; the combat and badges aren't as evolved as Paper Mario's but the art style, music, & oddly natural "Mario by way of classic Final Fantasy" tone are all stand out.

This is the first video I discovered on your channel, and I love your editing style and passionate fangirl approach to describing the game! Hope you'll keep up the good work! Also, are you pumped for the Thousand-Year Door remake?

thank you! i'm pleasantly surprised to hear you found the channel through this video, i think it's my least viewed one but i put a lot of passion into it :) and yes i was super happy with the ttyd remake news! i don't know if i'm going to buy it right away though since i have the gamecube one. but i'm definitely going to get the rpg remake since i don't have the original

Well, I'm no expert on the algorthym, but KZbin knows that I love Paper Mario, so it probably considered your video to fit that criteria. Actually, I looked through the rest of your videos shortly after watching this one, and this is by-far the most interesting-looking from a glance! Hopefully you'll pour your passion into similar retrospectives going forward! As for the Thousand-Year Door remake, I can respect the idea of holding off on re-buying a game you already own, but you might want to consider making an exception for this, as, if this sells, this might convince Nintendo that we need more games like this, and that Paper Mario 2 is actually phenomenal! Who knows? Maybe they'll go even further and give us *more* GameCube games if we convey to them that their cube-shaped failure is actually a success to the fans.

And yes, despite the fact that I played other awesome games (on the ps4 too), there was NEVER such thing like super paper mario. It remains the best game ever for me, although it's way too short. It's a perfect game for children, cuz time tends to pass quicker the older you are. I never realised how short wii games are in relation to gta v or something like that, until I played them again. Besides, Gta v doesn't even come close to being such a masterpiece as this game was! It is absolutely FILLED with riddles, and I love this

idk what it is about this game but i grew up playing the wii aswell and this was byfar the best game on there. it was a simple story for a kid to understand and love. what made it so great is how there were challenges for everyone in the game. everywhere you went everyone faced a crisis and everyone needed to come together to stop it. even count bleck faced many challenges too which i think is what made this game so great. 2 sides trying to stop eachother but they eventually see what is right and what needs to be done. everything is amazing about this game the characters and their development, and the music truly brings on a different atmosphere at times. but whats sad is nintendo wanted the story to end. they made an amazing game that i still love to this day and they intended for there to never be a sequel from the start. but the ending feels so empty

Going off of the nostalgia aspect, I remember as a kid I was told I could get Super Mario Galaxy 2 after beating Galaxy 1. Well, when I finally beat it, I was hit with the disappointing news that it was too expensive at the time, but I could still get a game. My Mom saw this one and suggested it. BEST. DISAPPOINMENT. EVER.

This is a game I both love and really dislike. I got 2 copies of this game once when I was very young maybe 3rd grade and the 2nd time around 7th or 8th grade. I liked it enough to get a second copy a few years after something happened maybe it got scratched or I lost it. But I still couldn’t bring myself to play it getting stuck several times throughout the game. 3 major ones the first being at the door to the first boss because of the game’s bad mechanics of revealing things by switching from 2d to 3D and revealing things by pointing the wii remote. The second time was at the mansion in which you need to grind out rubys. This was the one I was stuck in when I lost the first copy. I basically hated the game from that point since turning the game on would make me start that grinding process and get bored out of my mind before I did anything. After getting the second copy I used the Internet to get me all the way to hell in which you need to find Luigi with the stupid pointing mechanic again that hadn’t been used for a long time. I only found out about him actually being down there after having sold my Wii U looking the game up on KZbin. There was still so much I liked about it how Mario looked like and the way the levels would start with the blanc screen being painted in and of course the writing whenever I stopped skipping it.
