This comment's a bit late, but there's a concrete connection between Disney and Paranoia that I haven't seen mentioned yet. Fox Family channel aired a game show called Paranoia in April 2000. It didn't do well, and was quickly cancelled. Fox Family was bought by Disney in July 2001. If they were looking to explore using that IP, or ensure searches for it would direct to Disney instead of its original contents, it makes sense they'd want that domain name.

So, I used to go on this site when I was in high school. The reason it's not very well known today is simple, it went out right around when Google was going online. It's hard to express how much of a game changer Google's search methodology was. The vast majority of pre Google internet is forgotten because it largely relied on word of mouth to get traffic. If some company, like Microsoft, didn't buy it up, like with so many use net group archives, it was left to the periphery of the public memory. The most likely reason Disney bought this is simple, it's a single, common, word url. Many corporate giants buy as many of these as can be had for the purpose of domain squatting. They might use it, someone with a lot of money may want to use it in the future, etc. So they just buy up all they can.
@legorockstar20002 жыл бұрын
This is what I was thinking as well. Either it was a project idea that they eventually made into a redirect site, buying up unique and OG url addresses, or a mix of the two. The same thing happens with OG usernames in many different online profiles/games. People are literally hacking these profiles just because they're worth so much, I have no doubt if normal everyday people go to such lengths for these names, what would a corporation do?

Do you remember any other cool site?
@StreetofCrocodiles2 жыл бұрын
@@LeonTichy oh man, you are asking me to reach like over 20 years into my past. Hmm... Well in 1999 there was a streaming service, that, starting in 2000, also was on TV, owned by the Sci Fi Channel (yes pre Syfy) called exposure. It was a lot like a proto Vimeo. Independent film makers could post their stuff there. For 1999-2002 it did amazingly well at streaming full screen video, with decent picture, and little delay. Lots of great stuff on there back then. Cool site of the day was a staple back then. It was just a daily recommended site and you could look back through the archive of recommendations. In a sort of similar vein there was links from the underground. It was more of a blog, but it discussed new and interesting websites, things happening online, and a bunch of stuff. The Church of the Subgenius was a staple of the early web. Though it did pre-date it. In the early to mid 90s there was a site called youngmonkey that was mostly focused on electronic instruments, synths, etc. and the production for them, the hobbiest culture around electronic synth music, etc. Spent a lot of time on their as I was big into Industrial music at the time. There was a very old, like within months of the WWW being debuted, web comic called Dr. Fun. I remember liking it, but I can't remember if it was actually any good. It was ground breaking and created a new media genre, though. art.net was important. IIRC it was mostly stuff being shown in California, but it was the first major source to view art online. Hell.com was a private online community for artists interested in using the WWW as a medium for art. They had a cryptic public facing site that caused a lot of talk. They, occasionally, had public displays. Very interesting, cutting edge stuff, some of which is still talked about today ala the amz in site or 973-eht-namuh-973.com/. There is more, I might update as I think about it.

The fact that disney owns this site is incredibly strange, the only rational explanation I could think of is that perhaps disney had the idea for some project that'd be called paranoia, as many companies do that with their creations. As like most people, I'm shocked how little coverage there is on this site though. The closest I could think of was there was a RPG called Paranoia years ago that was published by a company that also published a Star Wars RPG, and Disney now owns Star Wars, so I was wondering if the brand Paranoia had eventually failed back to Disney with some other IPs from the Star Wars licensing that they used to take control of this web site... who knows? As always fantastic video. I do have a couple of theories. You mention that Disney never released a film called Paranoia, but I think that it either could've been a working title (something a movie is titled while in production before it's release), or something from a cancelled project that never saw any information go public. The other theory I have is that Disney decided to try and snap up popular domain names to try and re-direct traffic to their site, or just take the name in case of future movie projects.

The second one, they partly did it for the clicks - as well as control ANY information (negative mostly) that could’ve existed on the site previously. In addition, preventing it from ever existing again either. Then there may have been the sanctimonious notion of directing people (particularly children) towards something viewed as more wholesome. It’s a win all ways round for them, but top execs made the call, so it would be naive to assume their intents would’ve been purely altruistic. Fate though, laughs at the irony of it all, I’m sure. The only blow back is people assuming there is something EXTRA sinister about D*sney...and well, based on rumors of child trafficking and inappropriate sexual behavior and harassment of employees...it may still be an accurate theory. The company atm is BIG TIME into social engineering and making propaganda for political interests.

There was a game show called Paranoia broadcast on the Fox Family channel between April and May 2000, predating the acquisition of the domain by Disney. Fox Family would later be sold to Disney in October 2001 and renamed to ABC Family. So that may be why Disney bought the domain.

I was very skeptical about Disney's ownership until I did some more research. For reference, just because it redirects you to Disney doesn't mean Disney is the owner. I can set up a blank website and have it redirect to KZbin, I do not own KZbin. The website was founded February 28th, 1994 and was last updated January 17th, 2022. The Registrar is CSC Corporate Domains Inc, and I thought that debunked it, until I used a second WHOIS lookup with more information. In fact, the Registrant (customer who registered the domain from CSC) is ABC, Inc. and the contact emails for the registrant, admin and technician are all E-Mails hosted directly on Disney's domain. Wow!

@jonzenrael2 жыл бұрын
Came to look for this. CSC is the registrar, and like you say is the company handling the assignment and probably the nameservers etc. The important information is the registrant. The registrant in this case is ABC (yes, *that* ABC). If you google the specific office address listed you can find their previous business names. This particular 'part' of ABC was previously Capital Cities Communications INC. In 1985 this was purchased by ABC but ran independently until in 1996 when it was merged with 'The Walt Disney Company' and became 'Disney ABC Television Group'. So there's your Disney connection. What possibly happened, is that KevinTX bought the domain from a company that in some way was owned by Capital Cities. When the address was no longer renewed, ownership may have gone back to Capital Cities but in the meantime they had merged to form Disney-ABC. I imagine any of these domains is just a loose end that ABC doesn't feel the need to tie off - the miscellaneous bits of baggage left over after a merger with a gigantic corporation.

Wonderful video! I love these types of deep dive videos, especially ones about old internet. They’re interesting. This is the first time I’ve heard Pilotredsun music outside of videos specifically talking about him, and was surprised to hear Warsaw here. Keep up the good work!

You know, I wonder if they purchased the domain because of the defunct alien encounter ride experience thing they had. Given it's history, it would make sense in order to lure in more people who would enjoy more "adult" and "horror" experiences like they wanted in the park! It closed early due to a multitude of reasons, but this could have been for the resurgence of the ride or even for Lilo and Stitch.

Honestly, I really like the way it represents the freedom of the internet back then, just a place for building blocks, great video!

I'm a big fan of this type of content because the internet is such a massive place and I like to think I know an okay amount but I'm always surprised by videos such as these. Keep making high quality content!

Really well done video! You deserve way more recognition as the information complained in this was so well put together and laid out. I see a lot of people mentioning the Disney thing a lot and while there’s plenty of explanations for that, what I’m left wondering about the most is where is KevinTX today? He’s just left no recent trace aside from what you’ve covered?
@sombertoboggly2 жыл бұрын
thank you! i'd be super interested in seeing what he's up to today too. i also found his amazon account but didn't want to put it in the video since i'm not sure if he wants privacy or not. the account was still pretty active and leaving reviews though. if i spent more time looking into it i think i could probably actually find him. i've thought about it because i'd like to show him the video and i think it'd be cool if he was down to chat about the site.

I'm glad i was recommended this, i tend to love listening to these types of videos and i've never heard of this at all. You've got some good quality stuff, i'll be keeping an eye on your channel and lurking through your other videos~ Keep it up! ^^

i am DEEPLY fascinated by this. youve changed my brain chemistry, even just a little bit. i saw this vid yesterday and cant get it out of my head. the pages from '96 talking about how to find... kind women willing to do favors is the craziest thing ive seen. they list places I LIVE NEARBY. its absolutely insane. i hope to see more videos covering this!!!!

Really great video, I've never heard of this before and the quality is really good, your video caught in the recommendation algorithm for me so hopefully you get some more subs your way! Part of me wonders if at some point Disney was planning to make something called Paranoia and buying out the domain name was part of it and they just never released the domain after it either was cancelled or its name was changed down the line. (also z.brite goes by he/him now :D)

thank you! and yeah that is definitely a possibility and probably what is most likely. also i'm sorry i had no clue! thanks for letting me know in case i ever mention him in another video :)

@@sombertoboggly No problem at all, gonna look through your other vids now. Shame there's no way to confirm it but I suppose there's something nice about something always being a mystery too. No worries it's easy to miss tbh!

Ok, I know this off topic but I love how multiple of the background music you used are from Super Paper Mario Edit: I just saw your channel banner and that you made a video on Super Paper Mario. Happy to see another enjoyer of that game

I forgot about paranoia. It was one of those sites that should have been blocked by school but wasn’t. I spent a lot of time on it from grade school through middle school. The websites connected to it were a bit of everything from anime fan sites to gore. The 90s were a weird time to surf the web unsupervised.

I love the irony of the review that calls the site "well preserved" at the time, while today having it become almost completely forgotten and entirely wiped from the internet
@mutavhello66542 жыл бұрын
In the late 90s/early 2000s there was a rush by big companies to buy any domain name they thought could be valuable in the future, my guess is Disney acquired the domain this way.

Thanks for taking me back with this one, almost forgot about this site. Paranoia was great fun, you did a pretty good job at explaining more or less what it used to be. It's was a fun place for edgy kids (me) back in the day to browse and yea the stuff on there was way more brutal than Rotten, Rotten was Paranoia-lite. It also had a lot of guides on hacking and tech tips as well, it was everything a younger degen like myself needed to get their entertainment.
