Another powerful tricks is learning your chords (or even chord fragments) all over the fretboard. You'll be amazed the new life it breathes into progressions you've used for years. The past week I've challenged myself to find as many ways to play a 6-2-5-1 in the same key as I can and some cool stuff has come from the practice.
@maxonmendel57575 жыл бұрын
@@Terribleguitarist89 that's so handy! I just took five or ten minutes to give that a try: i went through the open chords Am Dm G C and picked a three-string set on that progression to pull shapes from. then I took it up a few frets and played barre chords using those same shapes. The best is the DGB string set cause it already forms a first inversion major triad

Great vid and great timing! Get this story...just happened to me about 5 days ago... I spent 2 or 3 days here in the train station writing a finger style song called "Down to My Soul". During those 2 or 3 days here writing the song I had beautiful woman after beautiful woman raving about. A homeless drunk sat watching this for days and grew jealous. On the third day, I finished the song and performed it in the train station. A hot blonde in spike heels raved about the song and how beautiful it was. That set off the drunk. When she left, he began blasting me and screaming at me and ultimately jumped me. I was forced to beat the crap out of him and gave him 2 swollen eyes. I never knew this finger style stuff was of such a violent nature.

Speaking of Travis picking (like 2 seconds in the video), I don't know if you have ever tried those thumb picks (maybe you talked about those), I bought some to try, I'm still waiting for them so I haven't tried them yet. I wanted to try because I felt like the thumb was not making the bass ring as I wanted, or not enough anyway. I started working on some Tommy Emmanuel tunes and I thought having a thumb pick could make a difference in the tone, especially when the bass notes are muted. So I was wondering what you were thinking about those and if it was weird at first.
@seandaniel235 жыл бұрын
I still need to try those!
@Mroklum125 жыл бұрын
As a beginner fingerstyle player and Tommy's fan the 1st thing i did was to buy one of these thumb picks, cuz just like great Tommy said "your pick is your biggest aplifier". So I started my 1st lessons on fingerstyle, ready with my thumb pick and the 1st thing i notice while resting my fingers on the strings was like "Daaaaaaaaamn my thumb needs a flight ticket to that low E string now!". What i love about fingerstyle is that you feel that you're in control of every individual string, and with that thumb pick it's kinda strange cuz you don't really feel the bass ones. On the other hand (or other finger?) you're able to make the bass strings really stand out and shine above your higher strings, and when you add some palm muting to this and utilize Tommy's "boom-chick" sound, it does sound amazing!
@JPVanderbuilt5 жыл бұрын
You get used to thumb picks really fast, I promise you. They're great. Order 2 or 3 different types and you'll find one that you love.
@Mroklum125 жыл бұрын
@@JPVanderbuilt Sure they are, those are wonderful and the only proof for that I need is listening to any Tommy Emmanuel song. One thing I noticed is I've been putting it on wrong, and when i realized this I decided to learn the above mentioned artist's songs with some Mark Knopfler vibe (who weren't using one of those), since my classical guitar responds to my finger's sound pretty well :D
@Mroklum125 жыл бұрын
@@JPVanderbuilt I just wanted to give you an update on today's discovery as I was practicing with my thumb pick like a wild beast. First of all, you were totally right, I started with my basic fingerpicking technique with the thumb pick and after like 15 minutes i got my control back, it felt like I shouldn't just drop out the idea in the 1st place cuz it was just soooo perfect! Then I started to wonder "that thing is unable to escape my finger like a normal pick would, wonder what would happen if I played an easy rythm song on chords like American Pie?" With a super relaxed right hand I managed to get an amazing tone playing classical chords that sounded awesome, and I haven't dropped a pick! Then I tried some lead stuff, holding my thumbpick like a normal one and it was awesome too, i achieved an amazing precision, and sometimes when i really got lost in the music i had an attack of a metalhead! Totally fell in love with those, getting some more today! :D

Tip for those having trouble with the "thumb ahead" thing, holding the guitar in a classical position makes it way easier. In order to get your thumb ahead you need your hand to come at the strings as perpendicularly as possible. You might find that you need to pretty severely bends your wrist to achieve this perpendicularity. But if you just angle the guitar instead, you can keep your wrist in line with your arm, which is more comfortable, easier, and safer. But at the cost of looking lame.

Your fingerstyle videos always confuse me and it's obvious that you didn't learn it the same way I did. I was taught first to just strum chords with my thumb and get a feel for the strings, then to play the root note and strum the rest of the chord & to keep rhythm, then I was taught to play alternating bass notes while still strumming the rest of the chord with my thumb, and then finally how to walk bass notes between different chords. After that I was taught the simplest versions of the different travis picking patterns, then I was taught some variations on all those patterns. Then I was taught to pick out some basic melodies using mostly hammer-ons and pull-offs. (This all took me close to two years BTW) After I had all that down I was told I could basically learn any other intermediate or advanced fingerstyle techniques I wanted to.
