I’m not moving my Seafoam Camellia they are in full zone 9 sun and have survived the Texas 2022 feeeze and the 2023 45!days of 100 degrees with no rain. Every garden center say they can’t take heat I say, “they are acclimated at this point. My Shi shi Camilla are in full sun and not moving either. Jim’s favorite plant has become a staple in my garden.

Take a bite of the Szechuan strawberries aka the fruit of that evergreen dogwood! You eat the pulp and spit out the seeds, very tasty

I've been gardening for only two years. I obviously didn't know anything (still don't) about gardening, so I just packed flowering perennials into the beds. They're getting too big now, and my taste has changed, so I'm moving EVERYTHING. Once I find spots for my Japanese maples, those won't move. I think the only plant that won't move right now is my Dinnerplate Hibiscus. It's been in the ground for 2 years and it's thriving. Not sure I'd be able to successfully transplant it even if I wanted to.

Besides the three trees I've planted.. flowering plum, Montmorency cherry, and Rising Sun Redbud, what else I wouldn't move is my confederate rose in my front yard. I have planted some others this year I can tell will soon be old friends I will enjoy aging with: my edgeworthia, my Thunderbolt nitida, my two Sunshine ligustrum, my Ruby Spice clethra, my Florida Sun illicium... shoot! I gotta stop. There are 10 or more I could list. Thank you, Jim, for allowing us vicariously to live with the stars in your yard, to get to know their personalities and quirks.

My Redbud (5b) has withstood everything 8 and 9 years old could come up with. They turned it into a 'fort '. The dead hanging branches were not pruned but just snapped off to have more room. Inside, they hung these wind chimes given by a neighbor. My surprise in the winter when I saw roosters up near the top. That tree will never move. ❤

When I bought my house in 2016 there was a camellia the was at least 10 ft tall on the front corner of the house. I limbed it up into a tree and I love it!! It adds so much weight and structure I would never consider moving it, even if it was possible! Although it’s so big and established I don’t think it would survive being transplanted.

Jim, I would never want to remove the 30' Hemlock I planted 30 or so years ago. It's shape is the perfect conical w/ a slight weeping effect. While I'm not at all fond of winter, especially when it snows, I must admit that snow on the hemlock is not only lovely, but can lift my spirits during the cold winter months.

Whew, this is a topic I need more education on. I've been gardening in ground for 3 years in Lower Alabama (8b). I have a few treasure plant I'd really like to move when I do including a Don Egolf and Golden Falls redbud. It'll be a year, if not two, before I move, so I'm at a loss as to what to do. Should I root prune this year, take them up next year? Dig them out now, put in large containers and nurse them back from their shock and baby them until we move? I think I'm fine with leaving the rest of my garden, having time to take cuttings and move them that way, but I'm at a loss for what to do with my pattented treasures :/

I have a forsythia that has become the size of a small tree with branches that drape outward. It’s a showpiece and has probably earned the ‘never move’ designation. It does take a lot of work to maintain the form, and I usually can’t do that right after it blooms because birds nest in it. So we continue on…

I planted a 6ft golden falls redbud in my zone 10a garden and leaf cutter bees have had a feast on it . I can't find a single leaf on tree which hasn't been munched on or is in its original heart shape. The leaves look healthy though but my friends/neighbors keep suggesting I put something to deter leaf cutter bees. I am just hoping bees have had enough and next season it fills in with more branches/leaves so it won't look so beat .

When I saw THIS video title, I immediately had a big smile. We got our house two years ago and it only had 5 tiny shrubs in the front. I've been planting over 35 trees, several shrubs and plenty of flowers. However, I keep moving my plants around as I try to get better at landscaping... and my husband keeps rolling his eyes when I do🙃Now I feel much less alone, so... thank you for this! haha

I moved it once many years ago, but right now my 4ft Wintergreen boxwood planted on the corner of my house will never move again. Perfect shape, healthy, consistent. And it smells good....at least up close. :-)

Timely video! We are reworking our beds too after we put in a new patio in the spring. Now that I've seen how some things are growing I need to rearrange plants for sure. At what point is it too difficult to move something? That's what we ask ourselves..even though we are in our 3rd season with this garden I feel a few things might be too difficult to move successfully.

Great points herein, Jim! Totally agree with having some “garden height” out towards the street. For me, it creates a feeling of being comfortably nestled in nature. Shasta viburnum - it’s a monster plant! I’ve got a half acre plot and that dang shrub was too big and growing aggressively. Took three of us to remove (most of) the roots. I’m a fan of columnar shrubs now 👍🏻 You have a GORGEOUS windmill palm! I have 2 of the ‘Tokyo Tower’ trees - exquisite tree that looks perfect every day of the year. Nothing bothers it. Requires no pruning. I’ve limbed up one tree to allow more sun to ground perennials. My second choice for keepers is my Cercis ‘Ruby Falls’ which is spectacular. Agree with your comment on few flowers and I’ve seen no seed pods. My first summer with Ruby Falls showed intense insect damage (must be yummy leaves). As it established, it needs no staking and very little pruning. Great winter interest with that ganglia of hanging branches. Going to a nursery today to help a friend select one of these beauties!

The house looks great! I got a Calycanthus x raulstonii (maybe Hartlage Wine) from an NC State arboretum symposium many years ago (Richard may have brought it, I just can't remember). How does the crown on your redbud handle high winds? Does it need support? My new (my experiment) angle falls weeping spruce (6-7 yrs old), even with staking seems like a weak spot.
