India's fertility rate hits the figure of 2.0, which is less than the 'replacement rate' as per latest National Family Health Survey. Shekhar Gupta digs deep into this declining figure and what lies in it for India's vast population. And there are some alarm bells to look out for in the Anaemia rate and obesity. It is heartening to note that we have achieved replacement level fertility. I would further like to clarify that the replacement level fertility 2.1 is applicable for developed countries only. For some African countries it is more than 3. Similarly, it is more than 2.1 for India considering the sex ratio and mortality rate. The most striking feature of the survey is that a significant number of children have low weight and height considering their age.

I think we may have missed the bus; atleast on economic growth front. In coming times the proportion of population which would be employed or working would progressively go down on the other hand the women participation in labour force is still abysmal. I think for our growth engine to keep churning, more number of women must be integrated into formal/informal economy, otherwise we may end up with mediocre growth trajectory in future. And this NFHS survey data suggests that we have no dearth of enterprising women in this country.

1971 census data WB : 4 crores 43 lakhs Andhra : 4 crores 35 lakhs Bengal and Andhra always had similar birth rates. A difference of decimal points, as the population grew, the % remained the same, but the gap widened. Plus Bengal has a huge internal migration happening from Hindi heartland states. High paid High skilled Tech migration of Andhra is huge, but low paid low skilled labour migration is bigger in Bengal. There are many suburban towns around Kolkata where the demographic has changed completely as the educated Bengalis migrated to other states and people pursuing low paid low skilled jobs came in from the Hindi heartland. You'll rarely find a cab driver in Kolkata these days who either speaks bangla properly, or without an accent. You can check the state wise internal migration data for validating my comment.

Population increase by having more birth, less death (longer life span), and immigration. If birth rate is same, improvement in health leads to more people, being an classic industrial state may also lead to immigration from neighbouring states like Bihar etc. Add it all up, 60 lakh is not so much.

Some concerning new data (for ages 15-49) in this survey include prevalence of elevated levels of blood sugar (overall: ~26% for Women & ~30% for Men) and hypertension (overall: ~39% for Women and ~45% for Men). While data on cholesterol wasn't collected, in combination with the data on obesity, and anemia, this may indicate a worrisome trend towards higher rates of metabolic syndrome, which has been associated with higher rates of hospitalization and/or death due to covid. These conditions, particularly when not under control also increase one's risk for certain kinds of dementias later on in life (usually mid 60s and later).

Immigration is not responsible. That's true lakhs of Punjabis are going abroad every year to foreign countries... But the reason of fertility being low is that Women of Punjab are much more literate & educated than most other states. In fact, There are many colleges & universities in Punjab where women outnumber Men (Punjabi Men are proving to be nalayaks vs quite motivated Women) ... look up for the last NSSO 2017-18 data as well for more information.

We should have a 25/50/100 year population plan. It’s time to put out the the District wise/ State wise/ Religion wise data and go for severe dis incentives for those exceeding 2 kids and incentives for those with 2 or less kids. Ostrich like attitude of not facing the problem will only make the life of future generation of Indians difficult.

Sir, very nice report... As a Bengali feeling happy that some stereotypes about us are being broken. Just wanted to say that fertility rate is not a percentage point. Its just a number. The Kanysshree scheme has increased the number of girls finishing their high school education and enrolling in colleges. Would appreciate if you could analyse this scheme.

@@madiam4u infiltration is an entirely different cup of tea. Moreover, the influx of people from Bangladesh is not limited to Muslims and since you are a Bengali, who I presume currently resides in bengal, you should be aware of. People cross the border into India to escape religious persecution and to look for better income opportunities.

India has an outstanding debt of Rs 200 lakh crore or 2.7 trillion US dollars, which includes debt of state govt & GOI. Per capita income is at US 2100 dollars. Most of the revenue is spent of subsidies, salaries, pensions by taking loans of few lakh crores every year by govt. The outstanding debt has been increasing so are the taxes. 80 crore people get 5 kg of wheat or rice every month @ Rs 3 / kg. There has been a continuous brain drain of talented people. Businessmen, millionaires have been relocating to business friendly, tax friendly countries. With no serious reforms due to politics, protests, PILs, NGOs and activists have been carried out by any govt after 1991. Socialism, freebies, subsidies have ruined this country.

Thanks for decluttering the nfhs report sir. The growth in percentage of anemia incidence is quite alarming, given we have running health programs for control of anemia. (In adolescent girls and pregnant women). Need to look into why it's not working, where our other nutrition health programs have usually been somewhat productive.
@chananarocks
@chananarocks 2 жыл бұрын
Strictly speaking, Iron, folic acid/folate, Vit B12. All these are required. Getting infections too can cause anemia. Then there's blood loss too. Now, the vegetarian food can only account for folate to an extent. Iron, only if the food is sufficiently soaked and cooked and eaten in plenty. Heme vs non-heme iron. B12, perhaps in dairy but still its need is more in pregnant females. Folic acid as drug/fortification will only work if there is no genetic MTHFR mutation. Otherwise methylated forms are required which is comparatively expensive. Does the program account for testing of homocysteine? All-round nutritional needs, or just a few once size fits all pills?

I see a lot of statistical gymnastics being performed here to prove that religion does not play as big a part here. Looking at the reports for WB, Bihar and Kerala, it is clear that Muslim women still have a way higher fertility rate than Hindus and Christians. At the same time, Muslim women and children are lower on other health and social indicators, like infant mortality, education level, workforce involvement etc. So religion still plays an important role, unfortunately. However, it is clear that reduced child mortality, better education, better workforce involvement etc. will bring the Muslim populace on par with the rest. There is nothing to fear. If we do not lay these facts bare, and let certain political factions continue to highlight certain parts of this data for their political gain, then we are part of the problem. We let them perpetuate the thought that there is some agenda amongst Muslims. THAT is something to fear.
@YT-lx9ry
@YT-lx9ry 2 жыл бұрын
All in all we need to bring the negative growth on all religion and possibly go up to 150 crore 2040 and come back to 100core by 2060. People should target one child per couple when they are 30 that too only if they can support. What is the point in bringing a child into the world if we cannot give them good food and life. Also the idea that demography of Muslim / Christian is an important piece and the fear of Hindus ( who are not elitist) that they may lose their majority. There are anecdotal evidence of Jordan and other countries where minority Muslim have become majority. Sorry this is a sensitive subject which needs to discussed in plain speak as the civilizational aspect cannot be hidden under carpet

On one side we say MSP can not be given as we are surplus in grains and the government can not legally implement MSP On the other side we rank poorly on the world hunger index. If MSP is legally fixed on all crops then the government will not have to buy any food item unless it wants to subsidise the poor. The food subsidy to the poor can not be called a subsidy to farmers. Modi government in 7 years has not been able to reduce farmers distress. It is about time someone else is given a chance.

India will become another Zimbabwe, Venezuela, Pakistan or South Africa with high inflation & huge debts.

Shekhar, With due respect, India won't age soon after reaching RR of less than 2. Is this persists for more than two or three decades then it'd start aging. It's now very important to ascertain if 2 is across all religious groups? If Hindus RR is less than 2 but other groups (not naming but you know what I am saying) then it's alarming too. Therefore India's RR must be for all religious groups.
