It was all about correct tyre pressure, correct range and gear selection. Then along came an upgrade to the 85 Hilux with the 2.4 diesel. Wow it was a big upgrade in power at the time. So basically, power is a luxury. The basics still apply to all the modern 4wds.

I did Fraser and Ngkala about 7-8 years ago in a Bog Stock 75 series Landcruiser with a flogged out 1HZ (4.2 Diesel). Only mods at the time were 33 MT's and a winch. Had to wait hours in a que only to watch almost everyone bog and have to lower pressures more and try again and again before finally getting tire pressures low enough. I didn't have any drama's in my heavy slug with tires down to about 12PSI. But the amount of people who sat in line, didn't bother to lower tire pressure til they bogged and then lowered tire pressure. :( How do you get the message across that if you bog there, it's too late, you already made a huge mistake. You didn't lower your tire pressures enough and even with tires pressures lowered it can still be a bitch to get going again. Just lower tire pressures from the start! Much easier on the vehicle, the track and on everyone's (including your) nerves. I was able to get through with a heavily loaded leaf spring under powered clunker without spinning wheels or breaking traction at all. I was flatt out in second low but all things considered, I got through easy. Maybe they need to put a sign at the start at the south end of Ngkala saying something like "Please put your tire pressures down to about 1/3 of your road pressures (about 12-14 PSI for most 4WDs)" You dont really have a risk of rolling a bead off until about 8PSI, unless your being STOOPID. That really should be known by ALL 4WDer's. Next is Gear. Low range (if you have it) and 2nd gear. If you have plenty of power, then it should be easy.
