Well I just didn’t know how to feel. Learning that Khanyisa was having her last day in the orphanage gave me feelings of sadness. She has grown up so fast right in front of us and like a child we’ve watched, worried, laughed and celebrated her life video by video. Then, I am excited for her new grown up experience of being fully integrated into the herd. She’s certainly earned this rite of passage. She’s such a clever girl isn’t she. I am so grateful to Adine and all the dedicated carers that made her whole life healthy happy and strong. What’s going to be new in her future? Let’s just keep watching and enjoying the life of our little sunshine girl.

Ahhhh, this makes me sad. To me she’s still that little baby that needs to snuggle with Lammie and Ngu. Then I see her next to Herman and I see she really is growing up. Look at our little ballerina posing on the wooden stump. Khanyisa came into my life in 2020 upon her rescue. Then the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic locked me down. Every video Adine made of baby Khanyisa filled my day. Khanyisa’s survival videos helped give me something to focus on. Khanyisa’s extreme injuries and treatments were difficult to watch. Knowing the pandemic made resources hard for HERD - lit a match beneath me. I began to spread the word and raise awareness, and money. Thank you Adine, Carers and HERD staff. I’m excited to Watch Khanyisa move to the barn with her elli family.

As I read this tears were flooding my eyes, tears of sadness and also of gladness. She's grown up so fast before our eyes as we followed every step of her journey. Her nursery was her castle. Nungu and Lammie faithfully by her side. And you, Adine and Carers have given her the best 3 years as a baby. Surely the HERD will be overjoyed to have Meisiekind with them and sleeping with them at night. I hope that Lundi, Tokwe Timisa Kumbura and Bubi will be close by. And as you said, you will be with her during this transition. Our sweet little baby Khanyisa, our adorable Meisiekind is going to now be with her family. God watch over her, the HERD, Adine and Carers. We will be watching every moment of this move to the homestead and for her future development!

Seeing her by the door I realise how she's grown and flourished, it's just wonderful to see. I'm longing to see how her mothers and sisters react to her presence at night, I imagine some excitement will be in the air at the homestead. Big girls don't cry, I tell myself, but oh, we do. Lammie and Nungu will be able to see her over the fence of the orphanage at the diving barrier, but we worry that as Khanyisa gets very very large, she could accidentally hurt the sheep. Watching Adine, HERD staff and the herd, care for Khanyisa all these many months has been a privilege and joy. Watching Adine, the vets and HERD staff care for Khanyisa all those days and nights is a testament to dedication and love. I, like so many others, have learned so much about elephants and their important place in South Africa and our planet. I cannot imagine how much work and love there is to care the orphans, orphanage, carers, land and reserve wildlife. I salute Adine. I will miss seeing and checking in with Khanyisa, the elephants, Adine and staff tremendously. I hope there is no dislocation of staff and we will continue to share in Khanyisa, elephants, HERD, carers development and will be able to take part in and support Adine's aspirations for the elephants, carers, land and the people.

Bittersweet indeed. We are so used to see this sweetheart coming out of her ‘home’ with Lammie & Nungu, devouring her milk bottles & enjoying her garden before joining her herd. Seeing her growing up, despite her sad beginnings, and becoming the sweet, independent & sassy girl has been an unforgettable experience. She made it thanks to you, her human herd: Adine & every carer, always loving her & always by her side and the comforting company of Lammie, the Legend & later, Nungu as well. The baby has grown & she needs to be with her herd to fully grow, in every sense of the word. Thank you, Adine & carers! 💖🌸 🐘

Thanks for sharing these moments with us. How poignant that she keeps checking out the little garden where she recovered from her wounds. Will she also be weaned as she moves into new territory with her herd? Children are at the mercy of their elders - in this case her human as well as elephant guardians - who must make hard decisions for their benefit. It may be a confusing time for her, as she continues to seek the comforts of her infancy. All my best wishes to all of you at HERD and to Khanyisa as she navigates this next chapter in her life. She has overcome her early hardships with courage, grace, and joy, and these attributes will serve her well from now on.
