This is an mpeg of how some train services also use English as well as Japanese to inform the passengers of the next station, which line to change over to at the next station and which door to exit out of. The announcement isn't audible until about 1min 25secs into the mpeg so be just a little patient. The reason I'm pointing the camera to the TV screens is because it has a little 'Let's Learn English' segment on the left & how far the train has gone down the track on the right in Japanese then in it changes to English. But not all trains have this service. By the way, due to previous comments, I did not mean for this to seem rude to Japanese people (sorry), that was not my intention, I got tired of waiting for the announcement to come on ... またごめなさい。

Each train station in Japan has its own melody so you know where you are when you get off without reading. That's one of the small things I miss about Japan.

Thanx Chaskarmukund. I was trying to take it as best I could. It's only a digital camera so I can't do much with that. But thanx for your comment.

i think as long as you are in the metropolitan area, they'll have english pre-recorded announcements....they have it as far as ibaraki (like JR mito line)

Wow, I didn't realise that! I'll have to take better notice next time ... I thought it was just a 5 second countdown or something before the doors closed. Interesting ...

Most, if not, all JR East (the newer trains) all have automated japanese and english announcements.

Yeah, it depends which line you decide to ride. Different companies offer a bilingual English/Japanese announcement on their trains. Some don't however.

I guess all train speaks English. All countries in Eastern Asia train speaks both their language and English sometimes Chinese too. But in Tokyo you might only hear The Next Station Announcement in English but arriving announcement will only be announced in Japanese. Japan, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Korea (even North Korea) all speaks their language and English.

If you go to Osaka or Tokyo or ne other great city many people do speak english...Japans culture rivals that of NYC (Fashion, Transit, Restraunts ETC...) Stay in the big cities or tourist areas and you shall have no prob. with translations. Its like Europe, many counties over there teach English as a second language. Plus its the universal language for buisness, until cantanese takes into effect.

@broxboy86 Lol. Yet another frustranted and narrow-minded native english speaker who'll never know the joy of learning another language. Look, I'm 21 and I already spent 6 months in Japan on my own, speaking only in japanese. Best 6 months of my life!! I guess this kind of experience is out of reach for you, how sad:( C'est quand même affligeant de voir que certaines personnes n'ont aucun respect envers les langues étrangères!
