I just wanted to address one of your gripes. The reason why Snake so often repeats information he is given is due to how Japanese communicate. Backchanneling or repeating what one has heard is a vital component of communication in Japan. So, rather than being a problem with the original writing, it’s really a localization problem. Source: I live in Japan, speak Japanese, and teach linguistics at a Japanese university. Anyway, I love these videos, man!

It was thought for a long time that something like that was normalized in the military too, to show that soldiers were paying attention and following orders. Despite what most people think, I don't consider The Twin Snakes to be a bad game or even a bad remake. Kojima stated that MGS1 is a parody on action movies (originally, there wasn't even going to be another sequel after this game) so I can appreciate the over-the-top cutscenes in the remake more than others: it was something he wanted to do in the original game but couldn't due to hardware limitations. It's undoubtedly an interesting take but the original is much easier to get a hold of and the level design of Shadow Moses wasn't made with the improved controls and mechanics from MGS2 in mind, having a detrimental effect on the difficulty.
@AluminumFusion22 Жыл бұрын
It does take away from the game's more emotional moments, like Meryl's speech after getting shot by Sniper Wolf or Sniper Wolf's last words as she dies. The English localization was surprisingly great for a PS1 game and it's obvious that even the voice actors took the material seriously, so having the remake be this over-the-top parody sort of takes the wind out of the sails of what Kojima is trying to say.

@remembertotakeshowerspleas3558 жыл бұрын
The letter "L" does not exist in Japanese Katakana. So whenever a word with an "L" in it is translated into Japanese, the "L" is replaced with an "R". So when translating Japanese into English, one has to guess whether or not an "R" is actually an "L" and vice versa. That is why Vergil is referred to as "Nelo Angelo" in DMC1 and holly is referred to as "Horry" here.

About the Twin Snakes crazy cutscenes, those were the original ideas Kojima had and could not do for the PS1 hardware limitations. In future games you will see shit even more crazier, and all directed by Kojima. Twin Snakes gets a lot of hate for being a GC exclusive, but is a great game, it fixes the problems MGS1 had, it runs at 60 fps, and looks great. Only bad thing about it is the music, it sucks. Anyway, cant wait for Johnny having su sumarise MGSV "story" XD

+Ivan Simpson Holy shit I loved that game. I played Ghost Babel after I played MGS1 recently and oh boy is it a great game. Ghost Babel felt like a 2d version of Metal Gear Solid, which basically makes it... a straight up reimagining of MSX2 Metal Gear 2. Now that I think about it, the setting is pretty much same as MG2...

Two other things I wish you talked about was the game's OST and the little touches of Shadow Moses. The soundtrack for MGS1 was always so hypnotic and immersive to me, it really made Shadow Moses seem real. That music, paired with the snow effects, footprints, cold breath effect, really gave the game and Shadow Moses a level of atmosphere that I can't really use words to describe. The threat of a nuclear launch seemed real playing through it. As for the little touches, you covered it somewhat in terms of the optional story stuff, but I wish you showed a couple more of the neat little easter eggs and hidden things like seeing Liquid's parachute in the snow field and getting a codec call about it. I know it'd have made the video even longer, but the soundtrack was just such a key element of the game for me that it's sad to see neglected. Great review though Johnny, interested in hearing what you think about MGS2.

His name is David as a reference to David Hayter, the actor playing Snake, it's just another meta reference from meme king Kojima.

+Ryan Baillie huh, I thought(and this is something I came up with on my own, not from any rumor online or anything) his name was david in reference to david and goliath, like snake(david) took down goliath(metal gear rex) with a sling(rocket launcher) though the 2001: a space odyssey reference makes way more sense for some reason

I grew up on MGS: VR Missions. My mom got it thinking that it was Metal Gear Solid, only to find out it was just VR Missions. So I only just (this year as a matter of fact) got MGS for my PS and all my years of playing VR Missions gave me the skills I needed to complete it without too much hassle. Thanks mom. Good looking out.

You think MGS4 had a lot of cutscenes? Xenosaga HAS OVER 20 HOURS OF THEM! Well there's over 100 hours of game play so I guess it's still pretty far from a movie, 1 hour of cutscene for 5 hours of gameplay.
@tyronetiggums64419 жыл бұрын
Yeah, MGS4 is 75% cutscenes and some of them are even worse and longer than in MGS2. The entirety of Act 1 alone has 90 minutes of mandatory cutscenes and Codec calls (ones that have important plot information). For comparison in amount of pure cutscenes (so not counting the time spent in gameplay segments), the Tanker chapter in MGS2 clocks in at 45 minutes and at 90, Raiden's getting ready to disarm the C4 bombs. In MGS3, most cutscene time has been diverted to the Codec conversations but even then, at 90 minutes the Virtuous mission is done and the plot's really starting to begin with the Ocelot encounter during the Snake Eater mission.
@tyronetiggums64419 жыл бұрын
***** A basic summary of it but it's completely true so what's wrong with retelling it? The 75% statistic is a rough estimate based on personal experiences with the game however.

+Red Lantern Reviews I disagree with starting in the middle of the series, especially when the graphics and features are a major upgrade from prior games. I say start with MGS1 and work your way up. You'll appreciate it that way more and every game going forward has call backs to previous games. Hell, MGS 3 isn't as interesting or fun if you don't have the relationship with Ocelot from the prior games first.
